Abstract

While scholars have widely acknowledged the value of integrating Critical Discourse Analysis (CDA) into educational research as a means of understanding the relationship between pedagogical practices and social contexts, this study presents a decade-long systematic literature review of English textbook studies conducted within the CDA framework in the field of English Language Teaching (ELT). The data comprised 41 journal articles published between 2012 and 2021, which were retrieved using the Publish or Perish (PoP) software and analyzed through an open-coding approach. The findings reveal a gradual increase in publication trends, particularly from 2018 onward. The reviewed studies were predominantly conducted in expanding-circle countries, with Indonesia and Iran emerging as the most frequently represented contexts. Consequently, a large proportion of the research focused on English textbooks used at the upper secondary education level. Gender inequality and its representation emerged as the most extensively examined topic. Other prominent research themes included ideology construction, educational values, racism, identity and citizenship, multimodality, and CDA-based textbook evaluation. Finally, this study contributes to the advancement of the CDA framework in English textbook research and offers directions for future studies in this field.

Abstract

ABSTRACT Transcreation has increasingly gained scholarly attention in translation studies, particularly in relation to persuasive texts, advertising, and cross-cultural communication; however, the theoretical relationship between transcreation as a macro-level orientation and translation techniques as micro-level procedures remains insufficiently systematized. This article aims to (1) elaborate the theoretical construction of transcreation drawing on Haroldo de Campos’ concept of Translation as Creation and Criticism and six Scopus-indexed journal articles within contemporary translation studies, and (2) identify which translation techniques proposed by Lucía Molina and Amparo Hurtado Albir potentially support transcreation practice. Employing a literature review method, this study analyzes key works on transcreation alongside Molina and Albir’s taxonomy through a comparative-conceptual approach to map the convergence between communicative-effect orientation and micro-textual procedures. The findings suggest that translation may be conceptualized as an aesthetically autonomous act of recreation and that not all techniques are equally compatible with transcreation; adaptation, modulation, amplification, and particularly discursive creation exhibit the greatest potential to enable shifts in meaning, perspective, and rhetorical strategy in achieving the intended communicative impact on target audiences. Abstract

The integration of generative artificial intelligence (AI) into English for Specific Purposes (ESP) instruction opens new possibilities for adapting authentic materials to meet the needs of novice learners. This study examines the effectiveness of different prompt engineering strategies in modifying the readability level of authentic English for Transportation texts while preserving essential domain-specific technical vocabulary. Five authentic texts drawn from the transportation and logistics domain, including port news articles, logistics manuals, maritime safety regulations, cargo handling procedures, and shipping route reports, served as source materials. Three types of prompts were applied to a generative AI tool (ChatGPT): Prompt A (a general simplification command), Prompt B (a CEFR A2-targeted rewriting command), and Prompt C (a structured prompt specifying CEFR A2 level and explicit instruction to retain all technical transportation terms). Readability was measured using the Flesch Reading Ease (FRE) formula, and technical term retention was evaluated through systematic lexical analysis. Results demonstrated that the original texts averaged an FRE score of 24.88 (Very Difficult), while Prompt A, Prompt B, and Prompt C produced average FRE scores of 50.18, 65.32, and 63.74, respectively. Notably, Prompt C achieved a 100% technical term retention rate, compared to 20% for Prompt A and 56% for Prompt B. The findings confirm that detailed, structured prompts specifying the target language proficiency level and vocabulary preservation requirements yield the most pedagogically appropriate ESP materials for vocational students at the beginner level. This study offers practical implications for ESP instructors seeking to leverage generative AI in developing teaching modules and course books for transportation programs.

Abstract

This study describes the role of TOEFL preparation classes in supporting the English language development of non-English major students across different study programs in the Institute of Technology Business AAS Indonesia, focusing on vocabulary, listening, reading, and structure and grammar skills. This study employs a descriptive qualitative research design. The finding shows that TOEFL preparation classes play an important role in improving the English proficiency of non-English major students who often have limited exposure to academic English and may face challenges in vocabulary, listening, reading, and grammar skills required in standardized tests. Through systematic instruction, guided practice, and strategic learning approaches, these classes help students strengthen their language abilities while preparing them for the TOEFL test. Vocabulary instruction emphasizes understanding word meanings in context through activities such as learning high-frequency academic words, identifying synonyms and antonyms, analyzing word families and collocations, and applying context clues and test-taking strategies. Listening instruction focuses on helping students comprehend spoken English in academic situations by exposing them to different accents, authentic materials, and technologies such as Text-to-Speech, while also training them to use strategies like note-taking and identifying main ideas. In reading instruction, students develop the ability to understand academic texts by learning text structures, recognizing key vocabulary, and applying strategies such as skimming, scanning, and identifying topic sentences. The Grammar section strengthens students’ understanding of English sentence patterns through topics such as subject–verb agreement, verb tenses, clauses, modifiers, and parallel structure, along with practice in Structure and Written Expression questions and strategies for identifying subjects, verbs, and common grammatical errors. Through continuous practice and structured instruction, students gradually improve their comprehension, grammatical accuracy, analytical skills, and confidence in answering TOEFL questions.

Abstract

The discourse of populism is a political issue that frequently discussed in a global context. As an phenomenon that is closely related to language use, populism has rarely been examined through linguistic analysis, particularly in Indonesia. This study aims to reveal how discourse of populism is constructed through specific language strategies. The data consist of Anies Baswedan's speech delivered during the 2024 Presidential Campaign, obtained from documentation on YouTube. The data in this study was analyzed using a Systemic Functional Linguistics approach that focuses on the Attitude system within the Appraisal analysis framework (Martin & White, 2015). The results of this study show that the construction of populist discourse is explicitly realized through Attitudinal resources that focus on affect, judgment, and appreciation. The emergence of a dichotomous narrative between the people and the elite is realized through the use of affect and judgment, while the emergence of narratives of crisis, destruction, and threat is realized through the use of appreciation, more specifically referring to negative appreciation-valuation. These findings indicate that evaluative language has a role in constructing populist discourse in the political sphere in Indonesia.

Abstract

Economic growth is one of the indicators to analyze economic development that occurs in a region. The increasing population in a region has implications for the expanding urban development area, so that the spatial structure of the region is widening. The spatial structure of a region is also influenced by changes in GRDP (Gross Regional Domestic Product) to measure the economic level of a city. The purpose of this study is to analyze the spatial structure and economic growth in the SARBAGITA Metropolitan Area. This study uses GRDP data for 2012-2022, LQ and Shift Share analysis used to identify leading sectors and changes in economic growth. The results showed that the wholesale and retail trade sector, the accommodation and food services sector, the construction sector, and the information and communication sector were the main drivers of economic growth in the region. Denpasar City and Badung Regency as the main growth centers experienced a significant increase in population. Rapid economic growth has changed the spatial structure of the region, marked by urbanization and changes in land use from agriculture to residential and commercial. The results of this study indicate a positive correlation between economic growth and changes in spatial structure. The implication of this study is the importance of comprehensive spatial planning to anticipate population growth, maintain environmental balance, and support sustainable development in this metropolitan area.

Abstract

This study investigates the impact of generative AI tools, specifically ChatGPT and DALL·E, on creativity in visual artworks. As creativity becomes increasingly co-produced with artificial intelligence, questions arise about how AI influences the creative process. This research uses a comparative experimental design with two participant groups: one creating artworks with AI assistance, and another without AI involvement, both working under the same theme and timeframe. A custom creativity scale developed by the researcher was used to evaluate the artworks, focusing on eight indicators: Creative Personality and Curiosity, Knowledge and Skills Expansion, Connection, Boldness, Originality, Fluency, Flexibility, and Elaboration. The results reveal a noteworthy contrast: while AI-assisted artworks often appear more visually impressive, they scored lower on the creativity scale. The non-AI group exhibited stronger performance in originality, personal expression, and conceptual connection. Conversely, the AI-assisted group showed higher fluency and elaboration, attributed to the expansive nature of prompt-based generation, but tended to lack depth and authenticity. These findings suggest that generative AI enhances certain aesthetic aspects but may suppress other critical dimensions of creativity. Rather than replacing human creativity, AI functions as a collaborative tool that reshapes the creative landscape. This study calls for a balanced perspective—recognizing AI as a transformative partner in art-making, while remaining attentive to ethical and educational implications in fostering genuine human–AI co-creativity.

Abstract

Towards the end of his presidency in 2024, Joko Widodo came under intense scrutiny from the Indonesian public. Allegations of a political dynasty sparked widespread disappointment. This dissatisfaction was expressed through various metaphorically meaningful negative nicknames on the social media platform Instagram. The aim of this study is to analyze the metaphorical meanings embedded in the negative nicknames directed at Joko Widodo. The data consists of 25 negative nicknames found on Instagram, analyzed using the Conceptual Metaphor Theory proposed by Lakoff & Johnson (2003). The method employed is qualitative descriptive with a focus on content analysis. The results of the study shows that the metaphors used by Instagram users carry strong implications for Jokowi's political image. These nicknames associate him with authoritarianism, deception, nepotism, or the suppression of democracy. The use of such metaphors has the potential to damage Joko Widodo’s public image, especially when linked to public dissatisfaction with his administration’s policies.
