Abstract

Screening for Transfusion-Transmissible Infections (TTIs) is an essential process in obtaining safe blood. Donors with reactive screening results must receive counseling, which is preceded by a notification process informing the donor of their test results, followed by post-donation counseling. Post-donation counseling is crucial to gather demographic information and assess risk exposure among donors with positive results. This study aims to determine the level of participation of reactive donors in attending post-donation counseling. It is a quantitative descriptive study using secondary data from the Blood Transfusion Unit of the Indonesian Red Cross (UTD PMI) of South Sulawesi Province. The study population consisted of donors who tested reactive for Transfusion-Transmissible Infections, with samples being those reactive donors who attended post-donation counseling. The results showed that out of a total of 353 reactive donors, only 33% attended counseling, while 67% did not. Several factors contributed to the absence of reactive donors during counseling sessions, including difficulties in contacting the donors and a lack of willingness to attend counseling. Considering the importance of donor counseling for the donors themselves, their families, and the community, it is a crucial activity to implement. Donor counseling contributes to the continuity of health services, plays a key role in preventing further transmission of infections, assists in outbreak control, and helps reduce the disease burden on the national health system.

Abstract

Diabetes is one of the most prevalent non-communicable diseases worldwide and a major public health concern, including in Indonesia. Limited public knowledge about diabetes can reduce awareness of the importance of regular blood glucose monitoring as an early detection and complication prevention effort. This study aimed to determine the relationship between knowledge level about diabetes and blood glucose monitoring behavior among residents of X Village, Ponorogo Regency. Using a quantitative approach with a descriptive analytic design and cross-sectional method, 100 respondents were selected through proportional random sampling. Data were collected using a structured questionnaire assessing diabetes knowledge and blood glucose monitoring frequency. Bivariate analysis with the Chi-Square test, followed by Monte Carlo and Fisher’s Exact Test, was conducted due to cells with expected counts below five. The results showed a significant relationship between knowledge level and blood glucose monitoring behavior (p = 0.019; Fisher’s Exact Test). Respondents with higher knowledge were more likely to perform regular monitoring than those with poor or incorrect understanding. These findings highlight that knowledge plays a crucial role in shaping preventive health behaviors by enhancing risk awareness, motivation, and self-efficacy. Continuous health education is essential to strengthen early diabetes detection behaviors in rural communities.

Abstract

Cervical cancer remains a leading cause of death among women worldwide, primarily due to Human Papilloma Virus (HPV) infection that activates oncogenic proteins E6 and E7. The use of synthetic chemotherapy often causes severe side effects, creating an urgent need for safer and more effective natural alternatives. This review aims to compare several herbal plants with reported anticancer activity against cervical cancer, including basil (Ocimum basilicum L.), soursop seeds (Annona muricata L.), Chinese petai leaves (Leucaena leucocephala), jengkol bark (Archidendron jiringa), parijoto fruit (Medinilla speciosa), kuhung-kuhung leaves (Crotalaria striata), and lawang bark (Cinnamomum cullilawan). The study also analyzes the extraction solvents used and their influence on cytotoxic effectiveness. Literature searches were conducted using Publish or Perish and Google Scholar with keywords “HeLa cells,” “cervical cancer,” “anticancer,” “apoptosis,” and “plants,” covering publications from 2015–2025. From 100 screened papers, 5 articles met the inclusion criteria. The results indicate that the combination of Chinese petai leaf and jengkol bark extracts showed the strongest cytotoxic activity through synergistic interactions of alkaloids, flavonoids, and tannins. Soursop leaves also act by inhibiting complex I in mitochondria and reduce the ATP production in cytoplasm, while basil exhibited moderate activity through oxidative stress induction. In contrast, kuhung-kuhung leaves and lawang bark displayed weak effects. Overall, the findings suggest that anticancer activity is strongly influenced by secondary metabolite content and extraction methods, supporting the potential of Indonesian herbal plants as promising candidates for cervical cancer therapy.

Abstract

Perineal rupture remains a prevalent complication of childbirth globally, affecting 40% of mothers in America in 2020, with Asia accounting for 50% of the world's incidence. Locally, data from the Pratama Dimens Tinggi Raja Clinic highlighted the severity, reporting 20 perineal rupture cases out of 31 normal deliveries between January and December 2021. Perineal injury, a tear occurring during labor, is common in both first and subsequent deliveries. Given that snakehead fish contains Albumin, which is vital for accelerating the wound healing process, this study was conducted to examine its therapeutic effect. The research utilized a Quasi-Experiment design with a one-group pretest-posttest approach to measure changes after the intervention: the consumption of snakehead fish extract. The study population included all 30 postpartum mothers at the clinic, from which a sample of 28 respondents was selected via purposive sampling, based on their willingness to consume the extract. Data collection was performed using a checklist sheet. The results strongly indicated a positive effect of the intervention. Among the 28 respondents, 13 individuals (46.4%) showed a 'good' perineal wound healing rate, and a majority of 15 people (53.6%) demonstrated a 'very good' healing rate. Statistical testing, conducted using the independent simple T-Test, confirmed these findings by yielding a p-value of 0.000. As this value is less than 0.05, the study conclusively demonstrates that snakehead fish extract has a significant effect on the acceleration of perineal wound healing in postpartum women.

Abstract

This qualitative descriptive study was conducted to analyze the workload and nurse staffing needs in the NS 3B Inpatient Room, which functions as a Class I, II, and III treatment area for general, isolation, and internal medicine patients. The room has a total of 26 beds and is currently staffed by 16 nurses, with 3 to 5 nurses, including the Head of the Room, available per shift. The study results indicate a high workload, as the average working time for NS 3B nurses is 50 hours per week, which exceeds the standard 40 working hours set by the labor department. While the workload is significantly mitigated by the presence of patient families and practicing students, the burden remains substantial. In terms of time proportion, the activities contributing most to the nurses' workload are indirect nursing activities, accounting for 37.91% of the total working time. Direct nursing activities follow closely, consuming 37.61% of their time. The evaluation of nurse staffing requirements, calculated using the Gillies formula, concludes that the NS 3B room requires 19 nurses. Since the currently available workforce is only 16 people, the NS 3B Inpatient Room is experiencing a personnel shortage of 3 nurses.

Abstract

Wasting is one of the forms of acute malnutrition in toddlers that can increase the risk of morbidity and mortality. Various factors such as maternal education, knowledge, parenting style, and infectious diseases contribute to the occurrence of wasting. This study aims to analyze the relationship between maternal education, knowledge, parenting style, and infectious diseases with the incidence of wasting in toddlers within the working area of Puskesmas Melolo.  The research employs a quantitative approach with a case-control design. The sample consists of 72 toddlers, including 36 cases (wasting) and 36 controls (non-wasting). The case samples were determined using the Lemeshow formula and selected through simple random sampling based on nutritional status. Data were collected via interviews using questionnaires and then analyzed using bivariate analysis with Chi-square tests and odds ratio (OR) calculation at a 95% confidence interval. The results indicate that variables significantly associated with wasting are maternal knowledge (p=0.001; OR=5,200), feeding parenting style (p=0,001; OR=5,179), hygiene parenting style (p=0,000; OR=5,900), and infectious diseases (p=0,000; OR=6.000). Meanwhile, maternal education (p=0,326) and psychosocial parenting style (p=0,458) did not show significant associations. This study concludes that maternal behaviors, such as nutrition knowledge and proper parenting practices, have a stronger influence on a child's nutritional status than formal education. It is recommended that community and health workers enhance nutrition education and promote good parenting practices through Posyandu activities and health counseling to reduce the incidence of wasting in the Puskesmas Melolo area.

Abstract

This study aims to determine the level of knowledge, awareness, and habits of elementary school students regarding Handwashing with Soap (CTPS) behavior at SDN 4 Panunggangan. CTPS is an important part of clean and healthy living behavior that plays a role in preventing the spread of disease, especially in early childhood. The research method used a qualitative approach through the distribution of questionnaires to 25 first-grade students and structured interviews with two teachers. The results showed that some students had understood the importance of maintaining hand hygiene and washing hands after using the toilet. However, students' understanding of the appropriate time to wash their hands, especially after playing outdoors, and knowledge of the correct handwashing steps are still low. Teacher interviews revealed that the lack of CTPS habits at home, students who often forget, and improper handwashing techniques are the main factors that influence CTPS behavior at school. These findings indicate that although students' basic knowledge is quite good, habituation, mentoring, and environmental support are needed for consistent CTPS behavior.
