Abstract

The stainless steel bracket is the most commonly used fixed orthodontic component in orthodontic treatment. The brackets in the oral cavity for a long time can cause the release of metal ions, one of which is nickel ions. Food and beverages can change the pH of the oral environment, such as probiotic beverages. The probiotic beverage with Lactobacillus casei shirota strain has a pH of around 3 – 4,5. Low pH can increase nickel ion release and allow hypersensitivity reactions to occur. The purpose of this study was to determine the effect of Lactobacillus casei shirota strain probiotic beverage on the release of nickel ions from stainless steel brackets. This research was a laboratory experimental study with a post-test-only control group design with 10 samples. Each stainless-steel bracket sample was immersed in 50 ml of artificial saliva as a control group and 50 ml of Lactobacillus casei shirota strain probiotic beverage as a treatment group. Samples were immersed for 18 hours and 15 minutes in an incubator at 37˚C. The release of nickel ions was tested using Inductively Coupled Plasma Atomic Emission Spectroscopy (ICP-AES). The results were analyzed by a parametric Independent t-test. The average release of nickel ions in the treatment group was 9,69 ppm and the control group was 9,22 ppm. Independent t-test showed a significant difference (p<0,05) in the mean of the artificial saliva and the Lactobacillus casei shirota strain probiotic beverage. The release of nickel ions from stainless steel bracket in Lactobacillus casei shirota strain probiotic beverage was greater than artificial saliva.

Abstract

Background: Obturation of the root canal aims to close access from the coronal and from the apical into the root canal. Currently the most widely used root canal filling material is guttapercha, due to its plastic properties, easy to manipulate, and easy to remove if necessary. Before use, guttapercha should be disinfected first to avoid re-infection of the root canal. One of the herbal plants that can be used as a guttaperca disinfectant is the Aloe vera plant because it contains phytochemical compounds that are antibacterial. Objective: To explain the potency of the herbal plant Aloe vera as a guttaperca disinfectant before root canal filling. Method: Collecting references in the form of research reports and literature studies as well as textbooks containing theories related to writing titles accessed through the Google Scholar, Research Gate, and NCBI databases published from 2012–2021. Conclusion: Aloe vera has the potential as an alternative material for disinfecting gutta percha because it has a fairly good antibacterial effect with very minimal side effects, so that Aloe vera can be a promising disinfectant in the future.

Abstract

Background: Childhood dental health is a vital component of overall well-being, with Early Childhood Caries (ECC) and defect enamel being major concerns. This article explores the intricate connection between stunting, malnutrition, and the development of defect enamel and ECC in children. Methods: Narrative review use Pubmed and Google Scholar databases with article inclusion criteria, namely research articles and reviews that discuss the relationship between enamel defects and malnutrition and ECC with malnutrition Results: Childhood malnutrition, characterized by inadequate intake of essential nutrients, poses a significant global health challenge. Stunting, a manifestation of chronic malnutrition, adversely affects physical growth and cognitive development in children. However, the link between malnutrition and dental health has not received adequate attention. This article examines the mechanisms through which malnutrition, specifically stunting, can contribute to the development of defective enamel in children. Nutritional deficiencies, particularly in calcium, vitamin D, and fluoride, are identified as key culprits in compromising enamel formation and strength. Weakening of the enamel leaves teeth vulnerable to dental caries, including ECC, which can lead to pain and long-term oral health problems. The complex relationship between malnutrition, stunting, defect enamel, and ECC calls for multifaceted solutions. Conclusion: This article highlights the importance of holistic public health initiatives, which encompass nutritional education for caregivers and improved access to dental care services for at-risk children. Interdisciplinary collaboration among healthcare professionals is emphasized to address the synergistic nature of these interconnected health challenges.
