Abstract

This research is motivated by the fact that history instruction in secondary schools places a greater emphasis on national historical events, while local history is often neglected. As a result, students are less familiar with historical events in their own regions. This condition reflects students’ weak local history awareness. This study aims to analyze the need for local history teaching materials in West Sumatra, particularly regarding the Padang Area incident (1945–1946) and the Emergency Government of the Republic of Indonesia (1948–1949). The research method applied a mixed methods approach. Data collection was conducted through observation, interviews, document studies, and tests. The study subjects included one history teacher and 20 students. Data collection used question sets, observation guidelines, and interview checklists. The results showed that: 1) teachers had difficulty finding local history materials, 2) students predominantly studied national history materials, 3) supporting facilities for local history learning were still minimal, and 4) the results of the local history awareness test showed that only 34% of students were able to answer questions correctly. These findings emphasize the need to develop local history teaching materials to foster local history awareness in students.

Abstract

This research is motivated by the low level of students’ chronological thinking skills in history learning, which has been dominated by lectures and conventional media such as PowerPoint slides containing long texts. Such conditions make students less active and relatively passive during learning activities. This study aims to analyze the need for an innovative learning medium called Chrono E-Puzzle to improve senior high school students’ chronological thinking skills. The research applied a mixed-method approach (quantitative–qualitative). Data were collected through observation, interviews, and a test using Google Form involving 25 eleventh-grade students of SMA Negeri 7 Padang and a history teacher. The data were analyzed using descriptive quantitative and qualitative techniques. The findings revealed that: (1) teachers still rely heavily on lectures with monotonous media; (2) students’ chronological thinking skills are relatively low, with only 12% able to correctly sequence the proclamation events; (3) students find it difficult to understand cause–effect relationships within historical contexts; and (4) there is a strong need for interactive and innovative learning media to enhance chronological thinking skills. These results highlight the urgency of developing Chrono E-Puzzle as an engaging, interactive, and meaningful history learning medium.

Abstract

This study analyzes the need for storyline video media in history learning to improve the chronological thinking skills of grade X Phase E students at SMAN 1 Basa Ampek Balai Tapan. The background of this study is the low ability of students to organize historical events sequentially, which is caused by limited variations in learning media. Teachers still predominantly use lectures and written texts. The approach used is descriptive qualitative, with data collection through observation, interviews, and pretests to measure students' chronological thinking skills. The results show that this ability is still low, with only around 23%–36% of students able to answer chronology-based questions correctly. The needs analysis indicates the importance of developing storyline video media that presents visualizations of events in a sequential, interactive, and engaging manner. This media is considered effective in helping students understand the relationship between time and cause and effect in history. Support for school facilities and smartphone ownership by students also strengthen the potential for its application. Therefore, the development of storyline video media for the material on the Patterns of Life in the Prehistoric Period is considered strategic in improving chronological thinking skills while supporting the achievement of history learning according to the Independent Curriculum.

Abstract

Humanistic learning theory places the individual at the center of the educational process, focusing on developing personal potential through the fulfillment of basic human needs, as outlined by Abraham Maslow and Carl Rogers. This approach emphasizes the importance of a supportive environment, respect for student independence, and the teacher's role as a facilitator in creating a learning space that focuses on students' emotional and social well-being. In the context of history learning, the application of this theory offers opportunities to create more meaningful and life-connected learning experiences for students, enabling them to develop critical and reflective thinking skills. Through experiential learning, empowering students to determine learning goals, and integrating humanitarian values, humanistic theory can help enrich historical understanding beyond cognitive, affective, and social learning. This study aims to explore the basic principles of humanistic learning theory and apply these principles to history learning, in order to increase student engagement and achieve more holistic and sustainable learning. These findings are expected to provide insights for educators in creating more inclusive history learning that is based on student self-development.

Abstract

Kampung Kubur in Medan City has long been known as a marginalized area with negative stigmas related to crime, drug trafficking, and slum conditions. This stigma not only impacts the village’s image but also impacts the social and economic access of its residents. This study aims to analyze the forms of social change that have occurred in Kampung Kubur following government and security force interventions and active community participation in transforming the area into a Prosperous Village. The research method used is a descriptive qualitative approach, with data collection techniques including field observations, in-depth interviews with residents and relevant officials, and document analysis. The results indicate that changes include improvements to the physical environment, increased security, and the emergence of more positive social interaction patterns among residents. Programs such as the Tobat Berobat (Repentance Post), cooperation activities, and the revitalization of public spaces have been proven to improve the community’s quality of life. Although challenges related to old stigmas and economic conditions persist, the community demonstrates strong adaptability and a collective commitment to building a new identity as a safe, clean, and empowered village.

Abstract

This study aims to conduct a needs analysis for the development of a learning medium, the Journey of Spices Game, intended to enhance students’ interest in learning history at SMK Negeri 4 Padang. The study was motivated by the low level of students’ engagement in history learning, which is still dominated by lecture-based instruction and conventional media such as textbooks and presentation slides. Such conditions result in students being less motivated and less actively involved in the learning process. The research employed a descriptive qualitative method, with data collected through observation, interviews, and needs analysis questionnaires involving history teachers and tenth-grade students. The findings indicate that students need interactive, visual, and enjoyable learning media to help them understand the topic of the Indonesian spice routes and the arrival of Western nations. Teachers also emphasized the necessity of technology-based innovations that align with the characteristics of digital-native learners. Based on these findings, the development of the Journey of Spices Game is considered relevant as an effective alternative learning medium to increase students’ interest in learning history. This medium not only provides a more engaging and interactive learning experience but also helps students understand historical material contextually, making them more actively involved in the learning process.

Abstract

This study aims to analyze the needs for developing an e-module designed to enhance students’ causal thinking skills in Indonesian history learning. The research employed a descriptive qualitative approach as the initial stage (Analyze) of the ADDIE development model. The subjects consisted of history teachers and 11th-grade students at MAN 3 Kota Padang. Data were collected through observation, interviews, and documentation to identify learning needs, challenges encountered, and the availability of supporting facilities. The findings revealed that history learning at MAN 3 Kota Padang remains conventional and teacher-centered, relying on unattractive materials that do not effectively stimulate higher-order thinking skills. Most students demonstrated low causal thinking abilities, particularly in understanding cause-and-effect relationships among historical events. Based on these findings, it is necessary to develop an interactive, contextual, and easily accessible digital e-module to support more meaningful history learning and improve students’ causal thinking skills.

Abstract

This research is motivated by the low level of students’ literacy and numeracy skills in history learning, which impacts their critical thinking abilities and their capacity to relate historical events to everyday life. The purpose of this study is to analyze the need for developing an e-module teaching material to train students’ literacy and numeracy skills in history learning at SMAN 1 IX Koto Dharmasraya. This study employed a mixed-methods descriptive design with a qualitative approach. The research subjects consisted of a history teacher and 11th-grade students as the target users of the e-module. Data sources were obtained from interviews, observations, and needs analysis questionnaires. Data collection techniques included in-depth interviews with one history teacher, questionnaires distributed to 30 students, and direct observation of the learning process. Quantitative findings showed that students’ literacy and numeracy skills were relatively low. Based on two pre-test items on literacy and numeracy, 43.3% of students answered correctly while 56.7% answered incorrectly. The survey also revealed that the school does not yet have an e-module to train students’ literacy and numeracy skills, and 70% of students expressed the need for an e-module for history learning. Qualitatively, observations and teacher interviews indicated that the teaching materials used are still predominantly in printed form, lack interactivity, and do not adequately support independent learning. Both teachers and students expressed the need for a digital, interactive teaching material that aligns with the Merdeka Curriculum and is capable of enhancing literacy and numeracy skills. The findings also suggest that an e-module integrating text, images, and videos would improve students’ motivation and comprehension.Based on the needs analysis, it can be concluded that developing a history learning e-module is feasible and relevant for implementation, as it supports learning objectives and improves students’ literacy and numeracy skills.
