Abstract

Objective: This study investigates the effectiveness of integrating Self-Directed Learning (SDL) principles into a Flipped Classroom model to improve English as a Foreign Language (EFL) reading comprehension among undergraduate students. Furthermore, it examines whether students' digital literacy levels moderate this relationship. Methodology: A quasi-experimental 2x2 factorial design was employed involving 60 second-year students from the English Education Study Program at Universitas PGRI Sumatera Barat. Participants were assigned to an experimental group (n=30) taught using a Flipped Classroom model explicitly designed with SDL scaffolding, and a control group (n=30) taught using an A La Carte blended model. The intervention spanned eight weeks. Data were collected using a validated reading comprehension test (based on Barrett’s Taxonomy) and a standardized digital literacy questionnaire, then analyzed using Two-Way ANOVA. Findings: The results revealed a statistically significant main effect for the learning model (p < .05). Students in the Flipped Classroom-SDL group demonstrated superior reading comprehension compared to the A La Carte group. Interestingly, digital literacy did not show a significant main effect or interaction effect, suggesting that the pedagogical structure of SDL effectively supports learners regardless of their technical proficiency. The study concludes that the deliberate integration of SDL strategies, such as goal setting and self-monitoring, within the Flipped Classroom significantly enhances students' ability to comprehend complex EFL texts, overcoming potential barriers posed by low digital literacy.

Abstract

The globalization of the Indonesian language through the Bahasa Indonesia bagi Penutur Asing (BIPA) programme has evolved from a simple linguistic exercise into a sophisticated instrument of cultural diplomacy and international education. As Indonesia's economic and cultural influence grows, more and more international students, researchers, and professionals want to learn the language. The pedagogical challenge in BIPA has transitioned from the acquisition of grammar and vocabulary to the cultivation of sociopragmatic competence. Research highlights a critical realization: the primary obstacle for international students is not necessarily cognitive or linguistic capacity but a lack of understanding regarding the cultural discourse that governs thinking and speaking within the Indonesian context. This suggests that language and culture are inextricably linked, forming a singular nexus where communication only becomes meaningful through the lens of cultural orientation

Abstract

The rapid evolution of digital communication has transformed linguistic interaction into a spatially distributed phenomenon, wherein meaning emerges through multimodal cues embedded in virtual environments. This study examines the psychological implications of spatial cybertext environments, interactive, hypertextual spaces within social media, on psycholinguistics students who navigate these platforms as both users and analysts of language. Grounded in pragmatic and psycholinguistic frameworks, this research employs a qualitative descriptive approach to explore how spatial discourse structures, multimodal symbols, and digital affordances shape users’ cognitive and emotional engagement. Data were collected from in-depth interviews, participant observations, and online discourse samples drawn from academic social media interactions. The findings indicate that students’ exposure to spatial cybertexts leads to three distinct psychological phenomena: (1) cognitive tension due to multimodal overload and fragmented attention; (2) pragmatic drift arising from context ambiguity and algorithmic mediation; and (3) metapragmatic awareness, reflecting a heightened sensitivity to language use, politeness, and identity performance in digital contexts. The study concludes that pragmatic awareness functions as both a cognitive and emotional regulator, enabling psycholinguistics students to sustain interpretive coherence amid digital overstimulation. The research offers insights into how spatial discourse in social media environments redefines the relationship between language, cognition, and affect in contemporary digital learning.

Abstract

The development of fundamental motor skills is a cornerstone of physical education in primary schooling and contributes directly to students’ long-term physical, cognitive, and emotional development. However, traditional instruction in motor learning often prioritizes repetitive technical exercises, which may hinder student motivation and engagement. This study explores how integrating the practice method and the play-sequence method can enhance both skill acquisition and learning motivation in elementary physical education classes, particularly in small-ball games. Using a qualitative descriptive design, this study synthesizes theoretical perspectives and empirical findings from prior pedagogical research to analyze how these methods shape motor learning outcomes and affective engagement. The findings indicate that the practice method supports precise technical mastery through structured repetition, while the play-sequence method fosters intrinsic motivation, creativity, and social interaction. When combined, these methods produce synergistic effects that strengthen psychomotor competence and student enthusiasm. The study argues that an integrated pedagogical approach grounded in experiential and motivational learning principles contributes to achieving Sustainable Development Goal 4 (Quality Education) by promoting inclusive, equitable, and effective learning practices.

Abstract

The increasing influence of multiculturalism and multilingualism, together with the expansion of tourism in Bali, has significantly contributed to the decline in the number of Balinese language speakers. To address this issue and to strengthen the sustainable use and preservation of the Balinese language and script, the government enacted Bali Governor Regulation Number 80 of 2018, known as the Balinese Language Policy. This study examines how this policy is put into practice through language signs in public places, often called the Linguistic Landscape (LL). The analysis specifically focuses on Article 6 paragraph (1) of the regulation, which mandates that Balinese script be placed above Latin letters in the naming of Hindu places of worship, traditional institutions, commemorative inscriptions, government and private buildings, streets, tourism facilities, and other public amenities. Employing a qualitative descriptive approach, the study involves an empirical survey of language signs in public spaces, their categorization, and analysis of policy implementation. Within the Balinese linguistic landscape, signs are classified as public and personal. The findings indicate that the Balinese Language Policy has been effectively implemented on public signage in accordance with the regulation. However, its implementation on personal signage remains limited, as only some individuals have adopted the policy

Abstract

Mathematics is often perceived as an abstract, universal, and culture-free discipline, presented in formal symbols and rigid procedures that appear distant from learners’ everyday realities. This research investigated fractal concepts in ethnomathematics in relation to the Minangkabau songket textile. This research employed a qualitative case study design. Data were collected using a document checklist of the songket and a semi-structured interview. Data were analyzed using document analysis and thematic analysis. The research population was the Minangkabau songket textile, and the sampling method was purposive; three songket motifs from Pandai Sikek, West Sumatra, were selected. The results reveal repeated patterns of self-similarity, iteration, recursion, symmetry, and statistical variation, which are similar to the structures seen in nature. These patterns are not the result of formal mathematical calculation but arise from indigenous knowledge grounded in the Minangkabau philosophy alam takambang jadi guru, where nature serves as the primary source of learning. Beyond their aesthetic function, the fractal properties of songket motifs serve as visual metaphors for cultural continuity, social harmony, and the intergenerational transmission of values. This research is limited to songket produced by Pandai Sikek in West Sumatra. This study reinforces the notion that traditional cultural products are not only artistic expressions but also repositories of sophisticated mathematical knowledge.

Abstract

More than 50% of students enrolled in the massage course during the 2022/2023 academic year failed to meet expected competency standards, with deficiencies identified in practicum performance, technical precision, procedural comprehension, and fine motor skills. This study investigated the effectiveness of audiovisual instructional media in enhancing massage skill acquisition among vocational education students. Grounded in multimedia learning theory, audiovisual media are posited to facilitate efficient knowledge transfer by integrating visual demonstration with auditory explanation, thereby supporting cognitive processing and psychomotor development. A quasi-experimental design with a post-test-only control group was employed. The sample comprised 108 students, randomly assigned to an experimental group receiving audiovisual-based instruction and a control group receiving conventional demonstrations. Massage competency was assessed using a structured observation sheet evaluating technical accuracy, procedural sequence, and motor coordination. Data normality was confirmed via the Shapiro–Wilk test, followed by an independent-samples t-test for group comparison. Results revealed that the experimental group achieved a significantly higher mean score (M = 87.92, SD = 3.863) compared to the control group (M = 83.52, SD = 5.215), with a statistically significant difference (t = 4.87, p < 0.001). These findings demonstrate that audiovisual instructional media positively influence students' mastery of massage skills by enhancing procedural clarity, reducing cognitive load, and enabling repeated visual rehearsal. The study concludes that integrating audiovisual resources into vocational health curricula can effectively address competency gaps and improve practical skill outcomes. Educators and curriculum designers are encouraged to adopt multimodal instructional strategies to support psychomotor learning in competency-based education contexts.

Abstract

This research intends to scrutinize the politeness strategies in Very Zalman Ewa’s film Kurung, utilizing the theoretical framework of Brown and Levinson (1987). The focus of the analysis is directed toward the application of four politeness strategies: bald on record, positive politeness, negative politeness, and off-record, provided that they are linked to the socio-cultural values of the Bugis-Makassar society. The results indicate that these four strategies function adaptively according to the social context and power relations. The bald on record strategy is employed in hierarchical situations demanding firmness; positive politeness appears in contexts of solidarity and affection; negative politeness is utilized to maintain respectful distance; while off-record politeness reflects the wisdom of speech through implicit and metaphorical forms. These findings illustrate that politeness in Kurung is a reflection of the values of siri’ na pesse, malebbi, and lempu’—concepts which emphasize honor, empathy, and honesty in communication. Theoretically, this research extends the application of politeness theory into the local cultural context; practically, it has implications for cross-cultural pragmatic teaching; and culturally, it strengthens the position of language as a vehicle for inheriting human values and social harmony.

Abstract

This study aims to analyze disaster warning signs in Padang City, West Sumatra, using a multimodal approach within the framework of linguistic landscape studies. As a disaster-prone area vulnerable to earthquakes and tsunamis, Padang provides a critical context to examine the effectiveness of visual and verbal communication in disaster warning systems. Data were collected through field observations and visual documentation of disaster signs in strategic locations. The findings reveal that these signs combine linguistic elements (monolingual and bilingual), visual components (symbols, colors, images), and strategic placement following national regulations. Symbols such as tsunami waves, tall buildings, and evacuation arrows enhance public understanding. However, the current signage design lacks inclusivity for vulnerable groups such as the elderly and persons with disabilities. Moreover, the integration of local cultural context and indigenous knowledge remains limited. This study emphasizes the importance of a holistic and inclusive approach to disaster signage design, one that not only complies with technical standards but also considers the social, cultural, and psychological dimensions of the community. The findings offer valuable insights for improving disaster communication systems to be more effective and adaptive for multilingual and multicultural societies.
