Abstract

Physics is often perceived as one of the most difficult subjects, leading to a lack of interest, particularly among students. This issue is exacerbated by the reliance on rote memorization of formulas and definitions, rather than a deep understanding of the concepts. Such an approach hinders students' ability to think critically and creatively, which is essential for problem-solving in real-world applications. This community service program aimed to address these challenges by providing primary school children in Sentani, Jayapura, with engaging, hands-on experiments to better understand basic physical concepts, specifically the properties of air. The activities included simple experiments such as "Jar and Handkerchief", "Straw in a Glass", and "Paper Helicopter," which illustrated concepts like air occupying space, the behavior of liquids in a straw, and the effects of air on objects. The program aimed to create an interactive and enjoyable learning environment, where children could explore physics without the pressure of memorization. The results showed significant improvements in the children's engagement and understanding, with most participants expressing interest in continuing to learn physics. The study concludes that such interactive, experimental learning methods are effective in enhancing students' interest in science and improving their critical thinking skills, and recommends expanding these activities to reach a wider audience in the future.

Abstract

The natural resource processing industry in Jayapura has begun to show results, especially in the form of local food and medicine products. Local product-based industrial products that have not yet reached industry players in Jayapura, such as aromatherapy candle products with essential oil extracts from plants in Papua. Aromatherapy candles are generally used to provide aromatherapy where the aroma can refresh the body and some can also repel mosquitoes, depending on the essential oils mixed into the candle making ingredients. Making aromatherapy candles is not difficult, does not take long, the raw materials are cheap and have a high selling value compared to the price of the raw materials. Based on this, it is very potential to be used as a commodity for industry players who are just starting their business. The implementation of the training in collaboration with the Jayapura BUMN House fostered by BRI Jayapura Branch, so that for the formation of new entrepreneurs who want to develop it, it has been prepared with its business funders, it is hoped that they will be able to become Micro, Small and Medium Enterprises (MSMEs), who are reliable in the aromatherapy candle industry made from essential oils from Jayapura and its surroundings. The training was conducted by providing material that was carried out with demonstrations by students who had been drilled by instructors, followed by a trial of making aromatherapy candles carried out by training participants. Evaluation was carried out by organoleptic testing of the level of preference for the resulting product in terms of aroma, texture, color, appearance using a Likert scale with a scale of 5, namely (1) Dislike, (2) Less like (3), Somewhat like, (4) Like, and Really like (5). Training participants were able to make aromatherapy candles well and liked the aromatherapy candle products from the training results.

Abstract

The Community Service (PkM) activity has been carried out with the PkM partner, SD Negeri Inpres Arso X, in Keerom District, Papua, Indonesia. The issue faced by the PkM partner is its dependence on well water as the primary source of water for daily activities. However, the well water does not meet hygiene standards and is contaminated by bacteria, chemicals, or other pollutants that pose health risks, especially for children. Additionally, the limited access to electricity in Arso X creates a need for alternative power to operate the water purification system. This PkM activity aims to address these issues by implementing a solar-powered Reverse Osmosis system to purify the well water owned by the PkM partner. The PkM activities consist of three stages. First is the preparation stage, where the PkM team surveyed the location and interviewed the PkM partner. The next step involved designing the solar panel mounts, the RO system, and supporting electrical components. During the implementation stage, the PkM team conducted awareness sessions via short interactive lecture on the importance of clean water and the role of renewable energy, followed by a demonstration of water purification using solar-powered RO technology. The monitoring and evaluation phase showed that the PkM partner has benefited from the application of the solar-powered RO technology. Furthermore, regular maintenance of the RO system and solar panels is necessary.

Abstract

Yobeh Village is part of the Sentani district and has 3 RWs and 7 RTs with 173 heads of families and a total population of 692 people. Some of the people of RW2 Kampung Yobeh live on the coast of the island in the Sentani lake area, approximately 56 families with a population of approximately 246 people. The waters of Lake Sentani are the "center of life" for the people of Yobeh village who are on the coast. They use the lake water as a place to earn a living as fishermen, throw away household waste and use it to fulfill their needs for bathing, washing and toilets and even as raw drinking water. Preliminary research results show that the water quality of Lake Sentani is polluted and does not meet the requirements for clean water.
