Abstract

The ubiquity of online communication in the 21st century provides a new medium for scholars to observe various linguistic phenomena, including studies on English as a second and foreign language. In this study, morphological errors and productivity among Filipino L2 English learners, who are also active users of Facebook, were explored—particularly with their formation of the past tense of English verbs. To conduct the study, the researchers drew methods from Ellis and Barkhuizen’s (2009) Error Analysis framework and Aronoff and Schvaneveldt’s (1978) framework for testing morphological productivity. Using these frameworks, the main findings show that the -ed suffix remains a salient structure for forming the English past tense. Aside from being the most productive structure, the findings show that most errors in the participants’ formation of the past tense of English verbs involve using the -ed suffix in place of the appropriate structures (such as the zero and replacive structures). This finding may be explained by L2 learners’ overgeneralization of the rule to use the -ed suffix in forming the past tense of regular English verbs. In line with these findings, language teachers and policymakers may develop procedures for intervention and reinforcement to address the overgeneralization of rules to structures where they do not apply. At the same time, the findings provide insights into the implications of the rise of online communication in language learning, including the challenges and opportunities it presents in addressing linguistic deviations.

Abstract

In language learning contexts, conventional methods frequently fail to engage students meaningfully, making it difficult to improve their academic achievement and learning motivation. Addressing this issue, teachers' personal storytelling in learning various languages has the potential to make the learning environment more approachable and motivational. This study looks into the impact of using the teacher's personal storytelling in learning other languages on students' academic achievement and motivation. A quasi-experimental approach was adopted, with a single experimental group comprising 36 senior high school students from Indonesia. The findings show that personal storytelling greatly enhanced both academic achievement and learning motivation. Students found the strategy engaging, unique, and contextually relevant, which improved their grasp of the topics covered. Furthermore, students noted that the strategy helped them reflect on their personal language learning journeys, inspiring them to better understand English and thereby improving their academic achievement. Overall, this approach made language learning more enjoyable and vivacious. The findings indicate that personal storytelling is an excellent teaching strategy that provides a contextual, engaging, interactive, and unique approach to language acquisition. It is recommended for teachers who want to create an engaging and relevant classroom learning experience.

Abstract

This study aimed to examine the effects of the flipped classroom approach on learners' vocabulary enrichment, specifically focusing on students' vocabulary skills under this method. Conducted at Calayan Educational Foundation, Inc., the study involved 105 Grade 11 senior high school students from the academic track, comprising 68 STEM, 23 HUMSS, and 14 ABM students, who completed validated questionnaires. The findings revealed a significant improvement in vocabulary skills after implementing the flipped classroom approach. While traditional teaching methods—such as repetition, drills, and direct instruction—are effective for younger learners in vocabulary acquisition, they may be less suitable for secondary-level students. The study demonstrated that a modified flipped classroom approach is highly effective for Grade 11 academic strand students. This method emphasizes learning by doing rather than memorization, allowing students to gain knowledge and develop vocabulary skills applicable in real-life situations.

Abstract

Culture shock is a phenomenon that manifests in individuals encountering alterations in their surroundings or cultural context compared to their original environment and culture. This occurrence frequently manifests within professional, social, or academic settings. This research endeavors to elucidate the phenomenon of academic culture shock experienced by Aanvulen postgraduate students. This research methodology employs a quantitative survey approach. The participants in this study comprised active postgraduate students with diverse academic backgrounds from various departments, totaling 20 respondents from the West Java province, each having a maximum of two years of lecture attendance. The instrument employed in this study was a culture shock questionnaire comprising 16 statement items designed to identify and assess affective, behavioral, and cognitive dimensions. The analysis of data employed in this study was of a descriptive nature. The findings indicated that 60% of Aanvulen students experienced culture shock within the moderate shock category.

Abstract

This classroom action research investigates the impact of Problem-Based Learning (PBL) integrated with debate techniques in improving Grade 12 students' speaking skills in learning discussion texts in a public senior high school in Purworejo. The research is conducted in two cycles, the study follows Kemmis and McTaggart's action research phases: planning, acting, observing, and reflecting. Each cycle involved structured activities, including debates, real-world problem analysis, and collaborative discussions, to enhance students' fluency, accuracy, and critical thinking. Data were collected through pre- and post-tests, observations, and questionnaires. Results revealed a significant improvement in speaking performance, with average post-test scores increasing from 73.86 to 86.43 across the cycles. The findings highlight and point to the effectiveness of combining PBL and debates in fostering active participation, boosting confidence, and improving speaking proficiency in English as a Foreign Language (EFL) context. These outcomes underline the potential of interactive and student-centered approaches to overcome challenges in EFL speaking skills development.

Abstract

This study aims to determine the importance of technological literacy in supporting the independent learning of Elementary School Teacher Education students in the context of distance learning. With the development of information and communication technology, distance learning has become a commonly used method, facilitating access to various learning resources without time and place limitations. However, the implementation of distance learning faces challenges, including limited access to technology, readiness of teaching materials, and limitations in effective communication between lecturers and students. This study uses a quantitative correlational method with a total sampling technique on 44 distance learning students to analyze the relationship between online learning and independent learning. The analysis results show that although digital literacy is important, there is no significant relationship between online learning and student independent learning. This finding indicates the need to improve digital literacy to support optimal independent learning in an online learning environment.

Abstract

This study aims to explore the implementation of Google Workspace for Education in school administration and to formulate effective strategies for optimizing administrative processes at a State Junior High School in Yogyakarta. Employing a qualitative research approach, data were collected through interviews, observations, document analysis, and questionnaires. The study investigated how Google Workspace tools are integrated into administrative tasks and identified internal and external factors influencing its adoption using a Strengths, Weaknesses, Opportunities, and Threats (SWOT) analysis. Findings reveal that Google Workspace for Education is effectively utilized in managing curriculum and student administration, particularly through online collaboration facilitated by Google Drive, Google Docs, Google Spreadsheets, Google Forms, and Google Sites. The school has established a development team and conducts regular evaluations to ensure the effectiveness of administrative functions. Based on SWOT analysis, the study recommends a progressive strategy that leverages the school's internal strengths to capitalize on external opportunities, thereby enhancing administrative efficiency. This strategic approach underscores the role of digital tools in promoting innovation and improving school governance.
