Abstract

Background: English is an essential skill that needs to be mastered from the elementary level to prepare students for global competition. Specific Background: However, many students in primary schools still face difficulties in listening, reading, writing, and speaking English fluently. Knowledge Gap: Few studies have explored structured school programs that integrate fun and interactive learning activities to improve students’ English proficiency. Aim: This study aims to describe the implementation of the English Time program at SD Muhammadiyah 2 Tulangan as an effort to improve students’ English language skills. Results: The findings show that four main strategies were implemented: listening exercises, reading practices, writing activities, and speaking sessions. These strategies significantly helped students become more confident and engaged in learning. Novelty: This study provides a practical example of a school-based program that successfully integrates enjoyable activities into daily routines. Implications: The results may serve as a reference for other schools to design similar programs to strengthen students’ English skills. Highlights:• English Time program improves four English skills• Students become more active and confident in learning• Program provides a replicable model for other schools Keyword: English Time, Listening, Reading, Writing, Speaking

Abstract

Background: Arabic language is a core subject in Islamic education, yet students often face difficulties in mastering vocabulary. Specific Background: At SD Muhammadiyah 1 Trenggalek, vocabulary learning was often monotonous, reducing students’ interest. Knowledge Gap: Previous studies rarely focused on systematic integration of crossword puzzles (TTS) as a structured medium for vocabulary instruction. Aim: This study aims to describe the process, challenges, and solutions of implementing TTS in Arabic vocabulary learning. Results: The findings show that TTS increases students’ participation, memory retention, and contextual understanding of vocabulary. Challenges include limited class time, diverse student abilities, and low initial engagement. Novelty: The study proposes strategies such as pictorial TTS, audiovisual support, step-by-step implementation, rewards, and teacher training. Implications: These results provide practical recommendations for teachers to design interactive and student-centered vocabulary learning in elementary schools. Highlights:• TTS fosters active and contextual Arabic vocabulary learning• Solutions address time, ability gaps, and motivation issues• Practical strategies proposed for sustainable classroom implementation Keyword: Arabic Vocabulary, Crossword Puzzle, Elementary School, Interactive Learning, Teacher Strategy

Abstract

Background: Public speaking is an essential skill for university students, particularly those engaged in student organizations. Specific Background: However, many students still experience anxiety when speaking in front of others, which can hinder their academic and organizational performance. Knowledge Gap: Studies that specifically investigate the relationship between self-confidence and public speaking anxiety among IMM (Ikatan Mahasiswa Muhammadiyah) activists are still limited. Aim: This study aims to examine the correlation between self-confidence and public speaking anxiety among IMM student activists at Universitas Muhammadiyah Sidoarjo. Results: Using a quantitative correlational design with 100 respondents, the findings revealed a strong negative correlation (r = -0.819) between self-confidence and public speaking anxiety, indicating that higher self-confidence is associated with lower levels of anxiety. Novelty: This study provides evidence focusing specifically on IMM activists, highlighting their psychological condition in organizational contexts. Implications: The results suggest the importance of interventions, such as public speaking training and mentoring programs, to strengthen students’ self-confidence and reduce speaking anxiety. Highlights:• Strong negative correlation between self-confidence and speaking anxiety• Focus on IMM student activists as a unique population• Practical implications for training and campus interventions Keyword: Self-Confidence, Public Speaking Anxiety, IMM Activists, Quantitative Correlation, University Students

Abstract

General background: Motivation is a crucial factor influencing student learning outcomes, as it drives persistence and engagement in the classroom. Specific background: In Muhammadiyah schools, teacher-student relationships are assumed to play a central role in shaping students’ motivation, yet empirical evidence remains limited. Knowledge gap: While previous studies have explored external factors such as family or environment, fewer have examined how teacher-student relational quality contributes directly to students’ learning motivation in the Muhammadiyah context. Aims: This study investigates the relationship between teacher-student relationships and learning motivation among students at SMP Muhammadiyah 5 Tulangan. Results: Using a quantitative correlational design with 200 students selected from 338 through Slovin’s formula, data were collected via Likert-scale instruments and analyzed with Product Moment correlation. Normality and linearity tests met statistical assumptions, and the correlation analysis revealed a positive though weak association (r = 0.178, p < 0.05), with teacher-student relations explaining 3.2% of learning motivation variance. Novelty: The study expands prior research by situating the relational dynamics within Muhammadiyah education, offering insight into a psychosocial variable not often highlighted. Implications: Strengthening teacher-student relationships may serve as a practical pathway for fostering sustainable learning motivation in Islamic-based schooling. Highlights: Teacher-student relationship shows a positive correlation with motivation. Relational quality explains a small yet meaningful portion of variance. Novel contribution within Muhammadiyah educational settings. Keywords: Teacher-Student Relationship; Learning Motivation; Correlational Study; Junior High School; Muhammadiyah Education

Abstract

General background: Education consistently requires students not only to master content but also to comprehend interrelated concepts, making misconceptions common in science learning. Specific background: In junior high schools, especially in the context of natural science learning, complex topics such as Earth layers often generate misunderstandings that affect further conceptual development. Knowledge gap: While misconceptions in science have been widely recognized, limited empirical studies explore how these misconceptions manifest in Muhammadiyah school settings. Aims: This study investigates the types and prevalence of misconceptions among Grade VII students at SMP Muhammadiyah 9 related to Earth layer material. Results: Using a survey approach with the Three-Tier Multiple Choice Diagnostic Test, findings revealed misconceptions across all subchapters. Male students showed the highest misconception rate (65.9%) in identifying elements of the atmosphere, while female students reached the highest rate (74.2%) in understanding temperature in the mesosphere and the ozone layer. Novelty: This study provides specific evidence of gender-based misconception patterns within a Muhammadiyah boarding school, offering new insights into science education challenges in faith-based institutions. Implications: Results underscore the need for diagnostic-based instructional interventions to address misconceptions and improve conceptual accuracy in science education.Highlights: Misconceptions persist across all Earth layer subchapters. Gender patterns show different misconception dominance. Findings suggest targeted interventions for science learning.
