Abstract

This study examines the historical formation of ecotheological discourse in South Sulawesi by emphasizing the role of local wisdom rooted in the relationship between religion, humans, and nature, as well as its encounters with Abrahamic religions. Accordingly, the focus of this study is adat (customary traditions) and their dynamics within a historical context, including colonial understandings of local religions. The research employs a descriptive qualitative method with a literature review approach, supported by historical analysis to trace religious conceptions of the relationship between humans and nature. The findings show that local wisdom embedded in indigenous/ancestral religion systems plays an important role in shaping ethical relationships between humans and the natural environment, which later interacted with the theological frameworks of Abrahamic religions (such as Christianity). These interactions produced distinctive forms of discourse, reflecting both continuity and religious adaptation. Ultimately, this study affirms that ecotheology in South Sulawesi is not a new construct but a historically rooted discourse that remains relevant to the development of environmental ethics grounded in local cultural traditions.

Abstract

This study aims to examine the shifting orientation of the Khatam Al-Qur’an tradition in Minangkabau from a religious rite toward a socially performative ceremony, and to explore possibilities for its revitalization through a social tafsir perspective. Rooted in the Minangkabau maxim adat basandi syarak, syarak basandi Kitabullah, Khatam Al-Qur’an historically marked a child’s completion of Qur’anic recitation and functioned as a medium of religious internalization. In contemporary practice, however, it has increasingly become a display of social prestige—often pejoratively labeled Katam Ayam—raising concerns about the erosion of its spiritual substance. Employing qualitative library-based research and drawing on the Tafsir Adabi Ijtima‘i approach, this article situates the tradition within broader debates on the tension between spirituality and cultural performance in Muslim societies. The analysis demonstrates that Khatam Al-Qur’an embodies both continuity and rupture in the negotiation of religious meaning. The study argues that revitalization efforts must reorient the tradition toward tadabbur-centered engagement with the Qur’an, in line with the principle al-muhafazah ‘ala al-qadimi al-shalih wal-akhḏu bil-jadīd al-aṣlaḥ. Such reorientation can restore Khatam Al-Qur’an as a locus of Qur’anic literacy, moral education, and cultural resilience, harmonizing local wisdom with the Qur’an’s universal ethical vision.

Abstract

The development of Qur’anic exegesis in Sumatra illustrates a continuous intellectual trajectory linking classical, transitional, and modern phases of Islamic scholarship. This study examines three major exegetes—Abdurrauf al-Sinkili, Haji Abdul Karim Amrullah (HAKA), and Haji Abdul Malik Karim Amrullah (HAMKA)—by exploring their biographical contexts, socio-historical settings, and distinctive interpretive features. Abdurrauf, through Tafsir Tarjuman al-Mustafid (17th-century Aceh), introduced an ijmālī and Sufi-oriented approach to make the Qur’an accessible to Malay audiences. HAKA’s Tafsir al-Burhan reflects early 20th-century Minangkabau reformism, employing a taḥlīlī method emphasizing reason and social engagement. Meanwhile, HAMKA’s Tafsir al-Azhar represents a modern, comprehensive synthesis that integrates transmitted and rational interpretations while addressing contemporary socio-political realities. Read through Talal Asad’s concept of Islam as a discursive tradition and John Bowen’s Muslims through Discourse, these tafsir works reveal not only textual interpretation but also ongoing negotiations of authority, identity, and social ethics. The continuity of Sumatra’s tafsir tradition thus reflects a discursive evolution, demonstrating how local scholars reinterpret the Qur’an in response to shifting historical and political contexts. The novelty of this study lies in positioning Nusantara tafsir as a dynamic dialogical model that contributes to contemporary Muslim societies by bridging classical heritage, local culture, and modern intellectual demands.

Abstract

This study aims to examine how dialogic, non-clerical digital discourse can be transformed into everyday spiritual practice within contemporary online religious ecosystems. Focusing on the “Tiga Fakir” segment on the SAY Inspiratif YouTube channel, the research addresses a critical gap in digital religion studies, where spiritual communication is often dominated by one-way preaching rather than participatory dialogue. Employing thematic content analysis, the study analyzes cleaned transcripts of the episode “Menjawab Pertanyaan Abadi Dalam Kehidupan” alongside audience reception data drawn from YouTube comments. The analysis identifies five mechanisms through which dialogue is converted into practice: (1) the framing of the “aku satu, aku dua, aku tiga, dan aku empat” scheme as a practical compass for everyday decision-making; (2) dialogic speech acts that normalize confusion and employ humor to lower participation barriers; (3) a non-clerical ethos that enhances spiritual self-efficacy through invitations to “small starts”; (4) narrative performativity that stabilizes shared terminology into repeatable micro-routines; and (5) platform affordances that enable participatory hermeneutics among audiences. The findings demonstrate that audience engagement exceeds affective resonance, functioning instead as a site of peer clarification and explicit adoption of spiritual practices. The study concludes that the “Tiga Fakir” dialogue operates as an operational map of digital spirituality, illustrating how complex frameworks of self and consciousness can be translated into transformative, everyday disciplines through dialogic media practices.

Abstract

This study aims to critically examine the concept and practice of polygamy within Islamic law and contemporary legal frameworks in Indonesia and selected Muslim countries, with particular attention to justice, protection of women and children, and the objectives of Sharīʿah (maqāṣid al-sharīʿah). Although polygamy is normatively permitted in Islam based on Qur’anic texts, its application frequently reveals a significant gap between ideal legal norms and empirical realities, often resulting in gender inequality and socio-psychological harm. Employing a qualitative design, this research adopts a Systematic Literature Review (SLR) guided by the PRISMA framework, combined with socio-legal doctrinal and comparative approaches. Data were drawn from peer-reviewed journal articles, Islamic legal literature (classical and contemporary), statutory regulations, and empirical studies from various Muslim contexts, including Indonesia, Turkey, Tunisia, Pakistan, Saudi Arabia, Afghanistan, and India. The findings demonstrate that polygamy in Islamic law functions as a conditional legal dispensation (rukhṣah), rather than an ideal marital model, and is strictly contingent upon the fulfillment of substantive justice and public benefit (maṣlaḥah). This study further classifies polygamy practices into best practices and bad practices, revealing that unregulated and clandestine polygamy often leads to legal insecurity, economic inequality, and psychological vulnerability. The article concludes that a maqāṣid-oriented interpretation, coupled with strong legal enforcement and ethical responsibility, is essential to minimizing harmful polygamy practices and safeguarding vulnerable family members.

Abstract

This study aims to examine how postmenopausal Muslim women exercise pious agency through embodied religious practices and how they construct narratives of piety within socio-religious spaces. The cessation of menstruation places postmenopausal women under the same ritual obligations as men, creating distinctive religious experiences shaped by age, bodily transformation, and reproductive history. Drawing on a qualitative approach that combines phenomenology and narrative analysis, this research engages Saba Mahmood’s concept of agency within the politics of piety to explore how religious devotion is lived, interpreted, and sustained by postmenopausal women. Data were collected through in-depth interviews and observations of women’s participation in both domestic and public religious practices. The findings demonstrate that postmenopausal Muslim women exhibit strong commitment to daily worship and religious community activities, particularly in mosques and study circles. Piety is understood not merely as ritual compliance, but as a continuous ethical practice emerging from embodied experience, spiritual education, and acceptance of the postmenopausal body. This study argues that women’s piety is shaped by the intersection of ritual habitus, reproductive experience, and social interaction, positioning postmenopausal women as active moral agents rather than passive subjects. Ultimately, the article contributes to gender-sensitive Islamic studies by highlighting embodied faith as a source of religious agency and socio-religious empowerment.
