Abstract

Using Charles Sander Peirce's theory, this study examines the object, representation, and interpretant in the screenplay for The Lord of the Rings: The Fellowship of the Ring. The research methodology employed in this study is qualitative research. Each of the triadic element is composed of three components. An object is denoted by an icon, which is a sign exhibiting a comparable appearance to its reference; an index, which signifies a connection between the representation and the object in terms of presence and occurrences; and a symbol, which is universally acknowledged through mutual agreement. Legisign, a sign in accordance with a general rule or code; qualisign, a sign perceived by quality; and sinsign, a sign based on actual shape or form, are all components of representation. The interpretant possesses rheme, which is a sign predicated on the interpreter's comprehension; dicent sign, which pertains to something that truly exists; argument, which comprises a justification for a given matter. The findings of this analysis indicate that the ring is of the utmost significance in the narrative of the film.

Abstract

Abstract This article discusses the importance of motivation in teaching and learning English as a foreign or second language, particularly in the context of English for Specific Purposes (ESP) classes. The study aims to identify demotivating factors affecting ESP learners at Kabul University of Medical Sciences (KUMS) and provide recommendations for improving the quality of English language teaching programs at higher education institutions level. The findings suggest that outdated teaching methods, a lack of relevance to learners' fields of study, and insufficient teachers’ support are one of the main demotivating factors. However, teachers’ enthusiasm and learner autonomy were identified as positive factors that enhance undergraduate students’ motivation. The article, further, recommends that teachers and administrators address the identified demotivating factors and promote positive factors to develop a more motivating and engaging learning environment for ESP learners at KUMS.

Abstract

This library research describes the importance of understanding Educational Psychology and English Language Teaching (ELT) to EFL and non-EFL students. Educational psychology is a vital skill for educators to effectively teach students, as it helps them understand their personality, thinking patterns, learning readiness, motivation, emotional state, and difficulties in learning English such as reading, writing, listening, and speaking skills. English teachers can utilise this understanding to design the lesson plan, handle classroom management, and offer guidance and counselling for students. English teachers/lecturers should set learning objectives, choose appropriate strategies, and foster a positive learning environment. Thus, mastering educational psychology helps English language teachers and lecturers to overcome learning problems and foster a conducive environment in the classroom. Further, studying educational psychology offers numerous benefits for English teachers/lecturers and prospective English teachers/lecturers, such as understanding individual differences, creating conducive learning environments, choosing the right learning strategy, providing guidance, and motivating learners. They must be aware of their students' personalities and preferences to create effective learning. Equally significant, educational psychology contributes to curriculum design, the learning system, and assessment systems, helping English teachers/lecturers understand the unique needs and abilities of students and guide academic problems.

Abstract

Within educational settings, the exploration of signals presents enough opportunities to analyze the dynamic exchanges between teachers and students. Gaining insight into the consequences of sign usage in educational settings can improve teaching methods and foster a greater understanding of the intricacies of human communication. This study investigates the complexities of speech acts in the process of learning the English language, with a specific emphasis on illocutionary speech actions between students and lecturers. Gathering data from 24 students, who were randomly selected from a single class, was done using Searle's taxonomy of speech acts. Verbal exchanges were documented and examined utilizing pragmatic analytic methodologies. The results demonstrate a prevailing reliance on representatives, underscoring a significant focus on effective communication skills and values. Directives, which are intended to influence the activities of listeners, are commonly used, while expressives and commissives are less frequently employed. This distribution highlights the central emphasis on the exchange of knowledge and the solicitation of information or actions during classroom interactions. The novel finding of this research is the recognition of a distinct hybrid speech act that incorporates components of representatives and directions. This indicates a fresh approach where students can effectively communicate information while also influencing their peers' comprehension and actions.

Abstract

The integration of audio-visual elements in educational resources has garnered significant interest, given their potential to enhance language learning efficiency. This study delves into the innovative use of such audio-visual tools, specifically YouTube, in speaking classes for students from non-English departments. The shift from conventional in-class language learning to online platforms, a change accelerated by the global Covid-19 pandemic, has revolutionized learning methodologies. This research offers a glimpse into the perspectives of ten Informatics Engineering students on utilizing YouTube videos for English language learning outside the traditional classroom setting. Employing a qualitative research methodology, the investigators conducted comprehensive interviews and classroom observations. The initial phase of data analysis involved data reduction, which was subsequently followed by further data condensation and conclusion derivation. The findings suggest that the majority of participants agreed on the significant influence of YouTube on their speaking class. Despite a handful of students facing network-related challenges, the study underscored that this web-based platform served as a valuable, cost-free supplementary resource for the speaking class.
