Abstract

To improve poetry writing skills, it is necessary to use a variety of strategies that encourage students to think critically and conduct in-depth examination. This strategy can considerably increase their originality and proficiency in poetry writing. The Nature-Based Learning Method is used in this study to improve critical thinking abilities, specifically those related to poetry writing. This quasi-experimental study assesses the impact of specific activities under controlled conditions. To ensure accurate and trustworthy data collection, the study employs a Pretest-Posttest Control Group Design, with a pretest administered prior to treatment and a posttest administered thereafter in both the experimental and control groups. The study included 63 students from Malikussaleh University, chosen by purposive sampling. The major data collection tool was a poetry-writing performance exam. Normality, homogeneity, and hypothesis tests were used during the data analysis. The t-test for students' poetry writing skills yielded a significant value of 0.000 < 0.05, rejecting the null hypothesis (Ho) and accepting the alternative hypothesis (Ha). In the experimental group, the average pretest score for poetry writing skills was 53.38, but it climbed to 80.65 following the intervention. Similarly, the control group's average critical thinking abilities score for poetry writing increased from 48.90 on the pretest to 67.65 on the posttest. These findings imply that by improving critical thinking skills, particularly in writing, students can considerably improve their capacity to write high-quality poetry. This enhancement in critical thinking is believed to boost problem-solving abilities and help to create more refined and compelling poetry compositions.

Abstract

This study used a qualitative approach to explore cognitive and AI-driven methods of English-Indonesian translation, focusing on comparing manual and automated processes. It investigated how human translators managed comprehension, reformulation, and production and evaluated the performance of AI tools like Google Neural Machine Translation (GNMT). The study examined vital factors such as linguistic accuracy, cultural adaptation, and handling of idiomatic expressions using qualitative expert reviews. Structural differences between English and Indonesian were highlighted, revealing common translation challenges. The findings showed that while AI systems offered quick translations, human translators provided greater cultural insight and precision. Ultimately, the research suggested that a hybrid model, combining both human and AI methods, would produce the best results, particularly for complex texts.

Abstract

This study aims to determine the accuracy of narrative text translation by using Google Translate Application and to describe translation techniques which are used by the translator in translating source text (ST) into target Text (TT). This research is a qualitative method that uses descriptive research approach to analyze the accuracy of narrative text translation and translation techniques. The result show The proportion of narrative text translated using the Google Translate application, namely from 16 analyzed data, resulting in 9 data (56.25%) as an accurate translation, 5 data (31.25%) as a less accurate translation, and 2 data (12.5%) as a not correct translation. It means that using the Google Translate Application can provide effective and accurate translations while also assisting us in transforming source language into target content fast and efficiently. Translation techniques which are used by the translator consists of single translation technique and couplet translation technique. Single translation technique consists of 14 data while couplet translation technique consists of 2 data. Literal translation technique consists of 6 data (37,5%), modulation translation technique consists of 3 data (18,75%), calque translation technique consists of 3 data (18,75%), modulation + calque and calque + modulation translation technique both of them consists of 1 data (6,25%), transposition translation technique consists of 1 data (6,25%), and reduction translation technique is also only 1 data (6,25%). The most dominant translation techniques which are used by the translator is literal translation that have 6 data (37,5%). It means that the form of translation adopting domestication of translation than a foreignizing translation.

Abstract

This study investigates the challenges faced by native Fataluku speakers in learning English pronunciation and the potential confusion experienced by native English speakers when interacting with Fataluku speakers who are currently learning English. These challenges arise due to phonetic differences between the two languages which can affect the effectiveness of cross-language communication. This study used voice recordings from native Fataluku speakers and analyzed consonant and vowel sounds by applying the Perceptual Assimilation Model (PAM). This model allows the identification of phonetic similarities and differences between Fataluku and English sounds, as well as the prediction of potential difficulties in second language sound acquisition.The results show that Fataluku speakers face significant difficulties in pronouncing some English sounds. The main difficulties are found in consonant pairs such as /ŋ/ and /n/, which are often mispronounced or not consistently realized. In addition, vowel pairs such as /ɪ/ and /ʊ/ are also challenging, mainly due to the absence of similar sounds in Fataluku. These findings highlight the difficulties in pronunciation not only affect Fataluku learners' confidence in speaking English, but can also lead to misunderstandings in cross-cultural interactions. As a result, cross-language communication becomes less effective, potentially affecting social integration, educational and employment opportunities for Fataluku speakers. Therefore, these findings have important implications for language teaching practices, including the need for teaching strategies that focus on difficult sounds and a contrastive phonetic approach to help Fataluku speakers improve their English speaking skills.

Abstract

Cooperative learning is a teaching approach that places students in groups to work together to complete learning targets. Many studies have focused on the implementation of cooperative learning in the classroom. However, only few studies discuss using cooperative learning in the writing classroom on narrative text learning from the student’s perspective. This research aims to find out students’ perceptions of the use of cooperative learning in narrative text learning and the implementation of cooperative learning in teaching writing in narrative text learning. Using a qualitative method with the case study approach, this research was conducted in one of the private schools in Banjarmasin, with six students and a teacher as participants. This study used classroom observation and interviews in data collection and documentation as an additional instrument to describe cooperative learning in writing classes for narrative learning. The results of this study confirmed that most students positively agree with the use of cooperative learning in terms of group collaboration, discussion, and information exchange in the classroom. However, time consumption factor was a major concern for students with the highest score. In spite of these findings, further studies are needed to expand the scope of using cooperative learning in the teaching of integrated language skills in the classroom.

Abstract

In a globally interconnected society, being able to communicate effectively requires language skills, especially in English. Speaking ability is the most crucial language ability, particularly for English as a Foreign Language (EFL) students. This literature review study explores the challenges faced by Indonesian English learners in developing their speaking skills and proposes solutions to overcome these obstacles. It emphasizes the critical role of speaking in language acquisition and highlights linguistic challenges such as grammar, vocabulary, and pronunciation, as well as psychological challenges including lack of confidence, fear, and anxiety. Additionally, the lack of opportunities to practice speaking English is identified as a significant problem. To address these issues, the study discusses the use of video assignments as an effective tool to enhance speaking skills. This research aims to help students become more confident and proficient English speakers, offering valuable insights for educators and learners alike. The result shown that the students can reduce the speaking problems effctively through making video assignment.

Abstract

Translation plays a key role in conveying meaning, context, and cultural relevance across languages. This study aims to analyze the translation strategies used in the Indonesian novel “Perahu Kertas” (SL) and its English version “Paper Boats” (TL), based on Baker’s translation theory. The research focuses on the application of all eight of Baker’s translation strategies. Using qualitative methods, the researcher compares the source and target texts to identify how these strategies were applied in both texts. The findings reveal that seven out of the eight strategies were used in the novel, with translation by illustration being absent. The three dominant strategies found were translation by paraphrase using related words, translation by omission, and translation by a more neutral/less expressive word, which prioritized meaning and appropriateness in the target language. This study provides valuable insights for translators and researchers in the translation field.

Abstract

This study examines the relationship between students' foreign language reading anxiety and their reading comprehension. It involved 28 eleventh-grade students from SMK Yarsi Medika in Kabupaten Tangerang. The research used a correlational design, with the English Foreign Language Reading Anxiety Inventory (EFLRAI) to measure reading anxiety and a reading comprehension test to evaluate students' abilities. The findings showed that most students experienced moderate levels of reading anxiety, with bottom-up anxiety (related to unfamiliar vocabulary) being the primary cause. The correlation analysis revealed a weak negative relationship between reading anxiety and reading comprehension (correlation coefficient = 0.053), which was not statistically significant (p = 0.788). These results suggest that reading anxiety does not have a significant impact on reading comprehension in this group of students. The study concludes that although students feel anxious during reading activities, this anxiety does not notably affect their ability to understand English texts.

Abstract

This study focuses on developing a Pictionary game-based assessment tool to enhance vocabulary mastery for junior high school students. The research employs the ADDIE model (Analysis, Design, Development, Implementation, and Evaluation) to create an interactive and effective assessment method that integrates visual elements to evaluate students' vocabulary knowledge. The Pictionary game, involving drawing and guessing words, is used as an engaging strategy to measure students’ vocabulary retention and understanding in real-world contexts. Findings indicate that although the game offers an enjoyable learning experience, improvements are needed to increase the validity and reliability of the assessment tool. Quantitative data, collected through students' performance on multiple-choice questions, showed that only 10 out of 25 questions met the validity criteria. Additionally, qualitative data, including feedback from teachers and students, revealed that the game's structure significantly impacted students' vocabulary retention and engagement. The study concludes that Pictionary-based assessments can be an effective tool for vocabulary acquisition, but further refinement is required to ensure consistent results and align the questions with students’ abilities.

Abstract

Conversation analysis is one of the subfields of discourse analysis that uncovers the intricate dynamics in everyday conversations including in TV talk shows. This study aims to understand how conversation analysis features such as turn-taking strategies, feedbacks, adjacency pairs, and repair mechanisms were used in two different TV talk shows. This study adopted a qualitative content analysis, more specifically the conversation analysis approach. The data collected comes from two interviews of the same person by two different hosts in two different TV talk shows. The results found that there are many similarities and some differences in the conversation analysis features between The Tonight Show Starring Jimmy Fallon and Jimmy Kimmel Live! talk shows. In conclusion, while both shows employs similar strategies, they differ slightly in terms of how it was used and in the overall tone created. These differences point out the unique conversational styles of each host, shaping the viewer's experience and the overall atmosphere of the interviews.
