Abstract

This study aims to determine whether Filipinos genuinely hold negative feelings towards President Duterte’s leadership. It analyzes public opinions through existing surveys, media discussions, and socio-political group actions. Using a descriptive research approach, the study seeks to understand the diverse perspectives on Duterte’s leadership in the Philippines. It explores the reasons behind both support and criticism, taking into account factors such as economic policies, leadership style, and responses to significant events during his presidency. By uncovering the various influences on people’s opinions in a changing political and social landscape, the research aims to provide valuable insights into the complex sentiments surrounding Duterte’s leadership. Despite facing widespread criticism for his authoritarian leadership style, war on drugs, and attacks on the media, President Rodrigo Duterte maintained high levels of public support throughout his presidency. The study concludes that Duterte’s leadership has both strengths and weaknesses, with high approval ratings attributed to his perceived strength, populist messaging, and effective communication. While not universally trusted, Duterte’s ability to connect with a significant portion of the population suggests a willingness among Filipinos to support leaders who promise to address their concerns, even in the face of authoritarian measures. Overall, this research contributes valuable insights into the intricate tapestry of sentiments surrounding Duterte’s leadership, shedding light on the diverse perspectives that define the Filipino public’s stance on their president.

Abstract

The purpose of the study was to assess how well fashion companies were able to sustain themselves throughout the COVID-19 pandemic by leveraging internet platforms. In spite of the numerous disruptions the fashion industry has experienced as a result of the COVID-19 pandemic's effects on the workplace and the shift in consumer behaviour towards digital platforms, industry stakeholders think that digital platforms offer potential for the industry's revival because many fashion businesses were forced to close during the pandemic. The paper examines and summarises the extent to which digital platforms have been effective in fostering the long-term expansion of fashion companies and their influence on livelihoods in the COVID-19 pandemic, using a narrative literature approach. Based on productive interactions and transactions, digital platforms provide a 21st-century, cost-effective way for businesses to promote themselves. Prior to the pandemic, fashion companies were able to market their goods and services, track live events, keep an eye on trends and projections, and boost their online presence, all of which contributed to increased revenue. Notwithstanding the fact that they continue to face major obstacles that negatively impact the livelihoods of their employees, the study shows how digital platforms have been incredibly effective in helping fashion businesses, especially those in the United States, the United Kingdom, Europe, and Asia, to endure and flourish during COVID-19. Although African customers have become accustomed to online shopping and e-commerce, digital platforms have not been especially popular throughout the continent, as fashion designers and businesses have not properly utilised them. In order to promote fashion businesses and designers, governments and policymakers should support the development of digital infrastructure and digital literacy initiatives. Additionally, fashion brands and businesses in the supply chain should improve their knowledge and understanding of how consumers and potential clients communicate and transact in their online networks. Finally, fashion businesses and designers should invest in social media sentiment analysis tools to facilitate effective online visibility, seamless interactions, and transactions with consumers.

Abstract

This study evaluates the impact of Organizational Culture and Transformational Leadership on Organizational Commitment and Organizational Citizenship Behavior through Employee Engagement in non-formal educational institutions (PKBM) in West Java. Data from 291 respondents were analyzed using Structural Equation Modeling (SEM) with the Partial Least Square (PLS) method. Results show that Organizational Culture and Transformational Leadership significantly influence Employee Engagement. Organizational Culture and Employee Engagement affect Organizational Citizenship Behavior, while Employee Engagement influences Organizational Commitment. Employee Engagement serves as a mediator between Organizational Culture and Transformational Leadership and Organizational Commitment and Organizational Citizenship Behavior. However, Organizational Culture and Transformational Leadership do not directly impact Organizational Commitment, and Transformational Leadership does not significantly influence Organizational Citizenship Behavior. Practical implications suggest enhancing institutional performance for the well-being of educators. The study contributes to the Integrative Organizational Behaviors Model, rooted in Social Exchange Theory, providing insights for future research on Organizational Behavior.

Abstract

Accreditation bodies mandate incorporating complex problem-solving (CPS) in engineering programmes on top of outcome-based education. However, its attributes are open to interpretation, leading to a lack of consensus on its implementation in engineering curricula. This paper suggests a solution: having CPS in projects, especially for the courses aligned with CPS-related outcomes. To eliminate ambiguities, the characteristics of complex engineering problems (WP) and complex engineering activities (EA) are restated. This ensures a consistent interpretation of WPs and EAs among educators. CPS projects can be phased into four stages: awareness, adoption, growth, and maturity, followed by continual quality improvement at both the course and programme levels. The entire process can span several years. To stay current with the latest academic and industrial developments, implementation should be completed within one accreditation cycle.

Abstract

This document presents a research proposal on the relationship between media and public perception regarding education. It is proposed, following Foster's tenets on the use of methodological pragmatism, to analyze narratives present in historical media and other educational documentation to comprehend how discourses are constructed through the narrative frames employed by the media and how this might influence the public's perception and understanding of educational issues. The proposed methodology is grounded in reflexive and critical analysis of existing literature, employing mixed qualitative and quantitative analysis techniques. Additionally, the use of reflective practice methods and frame theory is suggested to develop a scientific analysis from historical documents. This research aims to gain a more comprehensive insight into educational practices and debates within a specific period, thereby enabling a broader and more objective understanding and evaluation of the predominant educational discourse of the time.

Abstract

The increasing use of student’s loans schemes to finance higher education is currently a global concern. It fuels access to higher education mostly to children from low-income families which ultimately strengthen equitable human capital growth. However, due to the increasing demand for higher education coupled with lower budget, many governments especially those in developing Countries fail to accomplish this task adequately. This study therefore, thought to assess students views on the amount of loan allocated and status of their survival in Tanzania Higher education Institutions. The aim is to see whether the received loan amount sufficiently cover their degree program cost, and if not, what are survival mechanisms are they make to supplement the discrepancy.  The cross-sectional survey of 480 loans beneficiaries was adopted to collect data from four sampled universities. Data were analysed using descriptive and inferential statistics. The findings revealed that, due to the increasing trends of loans applicants’ and lower government budget, many students are allocated lesser amount of loan which eventually hinder their survival. As such others decide to engage on informal income generating activities which ultimately affect their academic progress. This study recommends on increased amount of loans allocation to students, as long as what they receive will be paid it back if adequate repayment strategies a put in place.

Abstract

This paper highlights several challenges that the adoption and implementation of the seventeen United Nations Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) pose for South African Higher Education institutions’ (HEIs) curricula design. It also reflects on the experiences of some institutions who have embraced SDGs in their teaching and learning, research, management (governance and operations), and public engagement strategies (Sustainable Development Solutions Network, 2017). SD4 seeks to “ensure inclusive and equitable quality education and promote lifelong learning opportunities for all”. This paper is intended to contribute to policy debates on issues that are seemingly being given little attention in curriculum design, in the advance towards the target 2030 date for achieving SDGs. The research is motivated by the absence of guidelines and frameworks from South African education governing bodies regarding SDGs, leading to knowledge and capacity gaps that frustrate academics who are increasingly being required to include SDGs in their courses. The author uses a qualitative methodology (document review) and focuses on literature published between 2019 and 2023 on the implementation of SDGs into South African curricula. This study recommends that private HEIs be included in the development of SDG governing frameworks and policies. It also recommends that HEIs develop a South African ranking system to track progress towards SDG attainment.
