Abstract

This research aims to discover the similarity and differences of Noun Phrase (NP) used in English and Indonesian sentences. This scientific writing used an instrument of report text as the reference to collect data. The report text was taken from a textbook of Developing English Competencies for senior high school. This research demonstrated that when English Noun Phrase was translated to Indonesian, there were changes in syntatic pattern, syntatic category, and meaning. Based on the research results, researchers found several similarities between Indonesian and English Noun Phrases. Similar parts, including head, determiner,and modifier, formed the Noun Phrase. However, there were also differences between them. English Noun Phrase was frequently expanded to the side of the head; meanwhile, in Indonesian, it was expanded to the back of the head. English Noun Phrase consists of a central-determiner (the, a, an); meanwhile, Indonesian Noun Phrase lacks it.

Abstract

The purpose of this research is to examine the types of English sentences based on function consisting of declarative sentence, interrogative sentence, exclamatory sentence, and imperative sentence found in the folklore “Jack and The Beanstalk”. The method in this research was descriptive qualitative with research source obtained from the American Literature website. The results of this research showed that in the folklore “Jack and The Beanstalk” there were four types of English sentences based on function. Type of sentence that appeared most frequently in the folklore “Jack and The Beanstalk” was declarative sentences (46 times), followed by the exclamatory sentences (13 times). Meanwhile, the types of sentences that appeared the least were interrogative sentences (2 times) and imperative sentences (2 times). Or in percentage form, as many as 73% of the sentences in the folkore “Jack and The Beanstalk” were declarative sentences, as many as 21% were exclamatory sentences, as many as 3% were an interrogative sentences, and as many as 3% were imperative sentences.

Abstract

This research was aimed to improve students' writing skills through group work. The subject of the research were the 11th IPA 7 of SMA Negeri 1 Natar that consisted of 36 students. This research used Classroom Action Research (CAR) which was consisted of two cycles. Collection data technique was used test and non-test. Writing test used to know students’ writing skill. Menwhile, observation sheet and interview for non-test. Data analyzing was used quantitative and qualitative method. Refers to the result of the test, the mean score of students’ learning activities cycle 1 was 6.65 with the criteria was less active. Meanwhile in cycle 2 was 7.57 with the criteria was active. The improvement was 0.92. In the other hand, mean score of writing test in cycle 1 was 60 or 8 students who got score ≥70 with the percentage 22%. Meanwhile, mean of writing test in cycle 2 was 75.57 or 20 students who got score ≥70 with the percentage 55%. The improvement was 33% or 15.57. Based on the result of the research, Group Work can improve students’ writing skill in the 11th IPA 7 of SMA Negeri 1 Natar.

Abstract

Parenting is the interaction process between parents and early childhood to instill and develop early childhood’s characters through natural since early age. The present study aims to analyze parenting styles applied by the parents to develop the early childhood’s independent character. In addition, this study employed a case study at which the reseachers gathered the data through observation and interview towards 13 early childhoods and 13 mother (parents) as the respondents. The results of the study revealed that 61,54% of the respondents apply positive parenting style to develop their early childhood’s independent character, 23,08% of the respondents apply permissive parenting style to develop their early childhood’s independent character, and 15,38% of the respondents apply mixed parenting style (positive and permissive parenting styles) to develop their early childhood’s independent character. Thus, the majority of the respondents apply positive parenting style to develop the early childhood’s independent character at home. In conclusion, the 3 parenting styles can be collaborated each other by the parents based on the characteristics of the early childhood, the tasks given, and also the situation.

Abstract

This research aims to delve into the intricate world of Noun Phrases in the English language, specifically within the Indonesian folklore text, “The Legend of Malin Kundang”, which has been translated into English. Using descriptive qualitative research, researchers sourced text from the Indonesian Folklore website. The enlightening findings of this research revealed a total of 85 Noun Phrases woven into the folklore text. Upon further analysis, thirteen structures emerged, each contributing to the richness and depth of these Noun Phrases. These structures include the combinations of “Article + Noun” (41.18%), “Possessive Adjective + Noun” (17.64%), “Noun + Noun” (14.11%), “Article + Adjective + Noun” (12.94%), “Article + Noun + of + Noun” (2.35%), “Adjective + Noun” (2.35%), “Article + Noun + Noun” (2.35%), “Possessive Adjective + Adjective + Noun” (1.18%), “Article + Pronoun + of + Noun + Noun” (1.18%), “Article + Pronoun + of + Noun” (1.18%), “Pronoun + Noun” (1.18%), “Preposition + Article + Adjective + Noun” (1.18%), and “Article + Adjective + Noun + of + Noun” (1.18%).

Abstract

This research examines the figurative language in Joji’s captivating English song, “Glimpse of Us”. The research drew its source from the international song website, www.azlyrics.com. The researchers meticulously analyzed the findings using a qualitative approach with a descriptive design. Remarkably, the song revealed a rich tapestry of figurative language encompassing seven distinct types. Allegory, the dominant form, emerged seven times, while metaphor emerged three times. Hyperbole and symbol each made two appearances, lending further depth and nuance to the composition. Additionally, the song employed apostrophe, repetition, and synecdoche once each, contributing to its overall lyrical magnificence. In terms of percentage, allegory comprised an impressive 41%, metaphor accounted for 18%, hyperbole, and symbol contributed 12%, and apostrophe, repetition, and synecdoche each held 6%.
