Abstract

Musculoskeletal disorders (MSDs) are pathological conditions that affect various structures of the musculoskeletal system, including nerves, tendons, muscles, joints, ligaments, and bones. MSDs are common among dentists, with the highest complaints at the neck, shoulders, back, and hands. Musculoskeletal disorders can be caused by a variety of risk factors, and posture while performing dental care procedures is one of them. The prolonged awkward posture performed by the dentist may increase the risk of MSDs. Neck pain, lower back pain (LBP), and carpal tunnel syndrome (CTS) are the most common types of MSDs suffered by dentists. A study revealed that dentists are experiencing lost productivity due to MSDs, caused by musculoskeletal complaints, poor sleep quality, and high stress levels. Therefore, the understanding and implementation of ergonomic principles in dentistry is important for the prevention of MSDs. The use of dental loupes, stretching, and regular exercise can also help maintain the productivity of dentists.

Abstract

Malocclusion is a functional disorder that can negatively impact a person’s physical and emotional health, often requiring treatment. The prevalence of malocclusion in Indonesia is approximately 80% of the total population, making it a significant dental health issue. According to the Health Research and Development Agency of the Ministry of Health of the Republic of Indonesia (Balitbangkes RI), the highest prevalence is found in the 12-15 age group, at 15.6%. Orthodontic treatment aims to correct improve function, facial aesthetics, and occlusal contact. The need for treatment can be assessed using the Orthodontic Treatment Needs Index (IKPO), which evaluates the severity of malocclusion based on three variables: knowledge, awareness, and willingness. Demographic factors such as gender, age, economic status, and administrative region can influence access to orthodontic services. Differences in demographic characteristics can lead to differences in knowledge, attitudes, and actions towards dental health, including malocclusion. It is important to improve education about oral health and ensure equal access to orthodontic treatment, especially in underserved areas.

Abstract

Background: Teeth play important role in the life of humans. Tooth loss may result in various anatomical, physiological and psychological changes on humans, including loss of self-confidence and  ability to interact socially. The causes of tooth loss generally include deteriorated tooth health and age factor. Fixed dental prosthesis is a solution to replace one lost natural tooth or more teeth and use of preformed temporary crown will keep the aesthetical and mastication function before a definitive crown is completed and placed. Objective: This research aims to explore the patient’s perception regarding the use of preformed temporary crown in fixed dental prosthesis treatment at the Rumah Sakit Gigi dan Mulut Pendidikan Universitas Trisakti. Method: This research is a descriptive observational research with cross sectional design which involved 30 patients at  RSGM-P USAKTI as respondents. Data were collected using google form by the respondents from February to June 2024. Results: Patient’s perception about toothache after cementation of temporary dental prosthesis (90%), difficulties in cleaning temporary dental prosthesis (93,3%), Gingival hemorrhage (90%), Gingival edema (90%), and oral odor (86,6%), majority respondents answered No. In the questions related to better food mastication (90%), speaking better (93,3%), comfort in using preformed temporary crown (90%), preformed temporary crown in predicting the results (90%), and majority of respondents (93.3%) reported increased self-confidence following the placement of fixed dental prostheses. Conclusion:  The patient's perception when wearing a temporary crown is quite good, so it can provide an idea when using a definitive crown in fixed dental prosthesis treatment.

Abstract

Oral wound healing is faster and more effective than skin wound healing, a process that is fueled by a complex interplay of cellular, molecular, and environmental processes. This review delves into the unique mechanisms of the enhanced regenerative ability of oral tissues. Oral fibroblasts have increased proliferative activity, specific adhesion profiles, and distinct signalling pathways that promote scarless healing. The oral cavity's immune microenvironment is that of blunted inflammation and repair-conducive cytokine profile, with predominance of M2 macrophage response and increased generation of anti-inflammatory mediators. Oral epithelial cells also allow for rapid healing of wounds through enhanced migration and proliferation, regulated by a salivary humid environment. Saliva itself plays a crucial role in that it acts as a reservoir of growth factors, antimicrobial peptides, and cytokines that collectively facilitate epithelialization, angiogenesis, and immune modulation. Skin wounds, however, are generally exposed to chronic inflammation, drier environment, and higher scarring potential. Understanding these fundamental differences not only enhances our knowledge of tissue-specific healing but also opens avenues for developing targeted therapeutic strategies that mimic oral wound healing mechanisms to improve dermal repair outcomes.

Abstract

This literature review aims to evaluate the efficacy of various intracanal medicaments in root canal therapy, particularly against Enterococcus faecalis, a common pathogen responsible for endodontic treatment failure. Calcium hydroxide remains the most commonly used intracanal medicament due to its high pH and ability to induce hard tissue formation. However, its efficacy against E. faecalis is limited. Proton pump inhibitors such as omeprazole have shown potential in enhancing the antibacterial properties of calcium hydroxide. In addition, herbal alternatives such as Aloe barbadensis miller (Aloe vera) have shown promising antibacterial effects with a lower toxicity profile compared to traditional medicaments. Although calcium hydroxide is effective in certain aspects of endodontic therapy, its limitations against persistent pathogens such as E. faecalis require exploration of additional or alternative intracanal medicaments. Proton pump inhibitors and herbal extracts such as aloe vera offer promising avenues for improving root canal treatment outcomes.

Abstract

Background: Dental caries is the most common oral disease in children worldwide and has been considered the most important problem in the oral cavity. Children with Down Syndrome (DS) usually have impaired communication, cognitive, and motor development so that it can be an obstacle in maintaining oral health in children. Objectives: To determine the factors that influence the occurrence of dental caries in children with Down syndrome aged 6-12 years. Methods: Scoping review using the last 10 years of journals that can be accessed through Pubmed, EBSCO, and Google Scholar databases using the Preferred Reporting Items for Systematic Reviews and Meta-Analyses (PRISMA) method. Results: From the three databases, we found 816 journals. Duplication filtering found 19 journals with the same title. Screening journals through abstracts obtained 125 journals. The entire journal was then screened for eligibility according to the inclusion and exclusion criteria and 6 journals were obtained that fit the criteria. Conclusion: Down syndrome (DS) children have a lower risk of dental caries due to an increase in salivary pH, salivary flow rate, and salivary electrolytes which cause conditions in the oral cavity to become alkaline. The role of parents in maintaining children's oral health is also very important in preventing dental caries in DS children.
