Abstract

Critical thinking is a higher-order thinking skill which is believed to be able to enhance students’ ability in facing academic as well as real life challenges and problems. Student’s thinking skill is affected by their prior knowledge and experience, which play an important part in the decision-making process, a crucial phase and a compound process taking a principal role in all thinking levels. The purpose of this research is to find out students’ critical thinking skill in order to recognize the characteristics of students' thinking based on decision-making style. This research is a case study adopting a qualitative approach, using descriptive analysis. The data are collected using test, observation and interview. The results show that more than half students’ critical thinking skill is still on the lower cognitive complexity based on the decision-making style.

Abstract

Problem-based learning (PBL) is a learning method based on the process between learning material to real life problems. The method has been widely applied and shown positive results on different subjects and education levels. In this paper, we discuss the application of PBL in mathematics education on several high schools in South East Asia countries, which include Indonesia, Thailand, Malaysia, Singapore, and Vietnam, considering that all of the countries had close cultural and geographical aspects. Researches on the application of PBL showed overall positive results to the high school mathematics education in all of the observed countries, with similar and distinctive objective and outcomes were found. In Indonesia, the application of PBL in mathematics education improve student’s learning activities aside from its positive contribution to the learning outcomes, while in Thailand, Malaysia, and Singapore, PBL contributes to the improvement of students’ higher-order thinking skills.

Abstract

This research was carried out because the learning activities used by the teacher were less varied, which resulted in abusive motor skills of group B's children not yet well developed. The purpose of this study is to improve the abusive motor skills of children through laciba gymnastic activities. The type of research used is classroom action research (PTK) which is implemented in two cycles. The subjects of the study were children of group B in TK Dharma Indria 1 amounting to 26 children consisting of 11 boys and 15 girls. Methods of data collection used are observation, documentation, interviews, and performance tests. The results showed that motor abusive ability of group B children in TK Dharma Indria 1 had improved with very good qualification. The average value of the class at pre-cycle 46.15, in the first cycle 61.77, and in the second cycle increased to 86.77.

Abstract

This study aims to describe the profile of the implementation of mathematics learning in the class, the challenges that the teachers did, and the efforts which did is to overcome the challenges in the credit semester system in mathematics learning activities. The research subjects are the students and mathematics teachers of X class in SMA 1 Jember. Data collection methods used documentation, observation, and interview. Based on the results of research that can be proven by mathematical learning in the implementation of the Credit Semester System described based on learning planning, learning activities, and the authentic answer. The mathematics teacher make a preparation by compiling lesson plans that guided by the 2013 Curriculum RPP and compiling the UKBM that adapted to appropriate scientific indicators. In the implementation of learning, the teacher carries out learning activities by applying scientific request. The assessment also adjusted to the 2013 Curriculum indicators. The teacher's assessment consisted of the preparation of the Credit Semester System, students' readiness, and conversation. Efforts which did is to overcome these challenges are by conducting socialization and MGMP as well as providing motivation and stimulus to students while conducting learning activities.

Abstract

Mathematical learning with contextual approach provides an opportunity for students to actively construct mathematical knowledge. In solving a problem which is start from the problems that can be imagined by students and giving them a freedom to find their own strategies to solve it. By posing a contextual problem, students in a stage can master the mathematic concept. The purpose of this research is to develop the design of Contextual Teaching and Learning approach on geometry learning module. This type of research is development research. The phases development of the model and learning tools are carried out in three steps, which are: (1) preliminary research, (2) prototyping phase. The result of design this prototype phase are: (1) design of the geometry learning module, (2) design tools of learning and (3) design of research instrument. The module component consists of: (1) module description, which consists of core competencies and basic competencies to be achieved; (2) the instruction for using the module, that consist of introduction, initial ability checks, activity sheets, conclusion, worksheet, assessment column, and answer key.

Abstract

This research aims to describe: (1) students' English speaking skill in English immersion school; (2) students’ strengths and weaknesses in speaking skill in English immersion school; (3) factors affecting students' speaking skill in English immersion school. The research was designed as a case study, conducted at a school applying English immersion in Bondowoso, East Java, Indonesia in Academic Year 2017-2018. The research used purposive sampling. Data were collecated by interview, questionnairre, observation, and document analysis. The informants were grade 2 students, English teachers, and the school founder. The analysis found that: (1) on the scale of 1-5 (1=very bad, 2=bad, 3=fair, 4=good, 5=very good), students’ English speaking skills were at levels of very good (2.22%), good (6.67%), fair (37.78%), bad (44.44%), and very bad (8.89%); (2) students’ strengths in English speaking skills were related to vocabulary with average score of 2.7, and the weaknesses dealt with fluency with average score of 2.25; (3) factors that were assumed to affect students’ English speaking skills were environment, local accent, vocabulary mastery, English use, preference, and habits. It is recommended that all parties involved in the English immersion program evaluate the running of the program and the content of the program to provide learning outputs through English immersion. Commitment to using English should be strengthened, especially in English Week program. Improvement on English teachers’ is needed by involving them in trainings. Finally, similar research at non-English immersion school is necessary to ensure the comparative results gained from both types of school.

Scientific motivation and creativity are important components that must be developed in learning physics. Some research has been done to develop motivation and scientific creativity but still experience obstacles in the form of a lack of learning modules that can be used as a guide for students in independent learning. The author offers flip book innovations on the principles of the Maglev train on electromagnetic induction material to foster learning motivation and scientific creativity. This flip book consists of material and test instruments. The material covers the history of the Maglev train, parts of the Maglev train, the principles of the Maglev train, each of which is analyzed by Science, Technology, Engineering, Art and Mathematic. The results of this study are obtaining flip books on the subject of class XII electromagnetic induction to foster learning motivation and scientific creativity.

Abstract

Mathematics has not been a finished product given to students, but it is the process constructed by students. Selecting the mathematic teaching material effectively by means of combining traditional game, will help students understand the mathematic content their teachers teach. The objectives of research were: (1) to package traditional game in mathematiclearning content significantly, (2) to include Javanese cultural traditional game into mathematic teaching discovery learning model. This study was a qualitative descriptive research based on interview, observation and document analysis. The result of research shows that discoveryof learning model and traditional game that can be considered as the innovation source in mathematic teaching material development for elementary school students. The topic of mathematics with unique traditional game for the development of discovery learning model for mathematic teaching material is important to develop as an effective learning source for elementary school students.
