Abstract

Research on poor-quality journals seems to be an inexhaustible study. The present study aims to understand the experiences of 3 Indonesian academics who published their scientific articles in disreputable journals. This phenomenology study was conducted within the framework of a qualitative approach. Data were collected by in-depth interviews academics. The study identified three key themes: Lack of Necessary Skills, Overestimation of Western Hegemony, and Acceptance of Fate. The findings indicated that some factors caused the academics to take shortcuts to get their articles published. The pressure to acquire the promotion to become a professor was the main factor influencing Indonesian academics to publish in these fast-turnaround journals. The findings highlight the need for academic institutions and policymakers to critically address the systemic pressures that drive scholars toward low-quality publishing outlets. Strengthening mentorship, providing training in academic writing, and reforming promotion policies to reward quality over quantity are essential to safeguard academic integrity. Furthermore, the study underscores the global implications of these issues, urging international academic bodies to collaborate in setting higher standards for research dissemination and evaluation practices.

Abstract

This study aims to analyze the ideological strengthening of Islamic Religious Education (IRE) in the era of technological disruption within Madrasah Aliyah Negeri (MAN) in Medan City. Amidst rapid digital transformation and the growing influence of globalized information, educational institutions face new challenges in preserving and transmitting religious values to students. Using a qualitative method and a case study approach, this research explores how teachers adapt pedagogical strategies to maintain the relevance of IRE in a digital age. Data were collected through observation, in-depth interviews, and document analysis. The findings reveal that teachers utilize several key strategies to reinforce Islamic ideology, including the clear and contextual delivery of curriculum content, sufficient instructional time, and utilization of available facilities and teaching staff. Furthermore, emphasis is placed on developing students’ critical thinking and reasoning abilities, nurturing civic awareness, promoting tolerance and appreciation for diversity, and aligning learning with students’ interests and talents. These strategies aim to balance religious values with the demands of 21st-century competencies. A novelty contribution of this study is its focus on the intersection between religious education and digital disruption, an area that remains underexplored in existing literature. Additionally, the research highlights structural challenges such as the absence of computer laboratories in several MAN institutions in Medan, which hampers equitable access to digital resources and creates information gaps among students and teachers. The study recommends future research employing mixed methods with broader samples across different regions to provide a more comprehensive understanding of IRE adaptation in the digital era.

Abstract

Epigenetic therapy represents a promising approach for treating allergic diseases, with microRNAs (miRs) playing a crucial role as regulatory molecules in the immune response. The aim of this study was to systematize data on miRs to elucidate the molecular mechanisms of pathogenesis in allergic diseases. A meta-analysis of 61 studies published between 2017 and 2024 was conducted, focusing on specific miRs, their targets, biochemical interactions, model organisms, and health impacts related to different allergic diseases. The study identified key miRs such as miR-21, miR-151A, miR-155, miR-202-5p, and miR-375, which regulate inflammatory processes in allergic asthma, allergic rhinitis, atopic dermatitis, and urticaria. miRs such as miR-143-3p, miR-146a, and miR-221 have dual roles in modulating inflammation, depending on the tissue and disease stage. Additionally, miRs influence the differentiation of macrophages and T-helper cells, and the production of pro- and anti-inflammatory cytokines, which are critical to the pathogenesis of allergic diseases. Specific diagnostic markers were proposed for each disease, including miR-126, miR-133a, and miR-203 for asthma and atopic dermatitis. This analysis highlights the complex role of miRs in regulating allergic responses, offering potential therapeutic targets for miR-based interventions. The findings suggest that miRs could serve as biomarkers for diagnosis and prognosis of allergic diseases. Furthermore, the ability of miRs to both exacerbate and attenuate inflammation underscores their potential as therapeutic tools in precision medicine. The novelty of this study lies in the comprehensive synthesis of miR involvement in allergic diseases, providing a clearer understanding of their dual regulatory roles.

Abstract

As the digital revolution continues to redefine global education, Islamic Higher Education (IHE) institutions in Indonesia face the dual challenge of integrating modern technology with traditional religious instruction. This study explores how digital learning environments can harmonize with Islamic pedagogical values to shape student satisfaction in online learning. Guided by Albert Bandura’s social cognitive theory, this research investigates the psychosocial and contextual factors influencing satisfaction and perceived learning outcomes among students in faith-based online education. A total of 3,270 undergraduate students from four IHE institutions participated in this study. Using Structural Equation Modeling-Partial Least Squares (SEM-PLS), we developed a novel integrative model that incorporates conventional online learning dimensions—such as teacher support, content adaptability, student interaction, and perceived ease of use—alongside embedded Islamic values. The analysis reveals that Islamic values are the most dominant factor influencing student satisfaction, surpassing even technological usability. Teacher support significantly enhances metacognitive skills, reinforces faith-based values, and increases overall satisfaction. Additionally, the availability of virtual laboratory resources and adaptive content was found to moderate the relationship between psychosocial factors and learning outcomes. This research contributes a faith-integrated theoretical framework for understanding online learning in religious educational settings, a relatively underexplored domain. It explains 72.8% of the variance in student satisfaction, offering robust insights for curriculum designers, educators, and policymakers aiming to optimize Islamic online education. The study opens new pathways for cross-cultural research at the intersection of technology, pedagogy, and religious values in digital learning environments.

Abstract

The aim of the research is to explore the cognitive profiles patterns of strengths and weaknesses of children with specific learning difficulties and to assess how these profiles can inform individualized educational interventions. Using a collective case study approach, data were collected from four school-aged children (7–9 years old) with low academic performance through a mixed-method design involving parental interviews and comprehensive psychological testing. The Wechsler Intelligence Scale for Children-Revised (WISC-R) and the Marianne Frostig Developmental Test of Visual Perception were employed to assess intellectual ability, working memory, attention, and visual perception. Results revealed that all participants had average to very superior intellectual capacities, indicating that learning difficulties were not related to intelligence level. However, consistent patterns of weaknesses were identified in working memory, attention, and visual-motor coordination, while abstract verbal reasoning remained a cognitive strength. One participant exhibited a unique strength in perceptual organization, linked to enriched sensory interaction and high intellectual capacity. This research offers a novel perspective on recognizing specific learning difficulties through cognitive profiling rather than general academic performance. The findings underscore the importance of comprehensive assessments in identifying hidden handicaps and developing tailored educational strategies. The implication is clear: effective interventions must consider both cognitive strengths and weaknesses to support academic achievement and emotional well-being in children with specific learning difficulties.

Abstract

Cultural literacy plays a critical role in developing students’ sense of responsibility, tolerance, and national identity. In the context of 21st-century education, it is a key component of the Pancasila Student Profile, which guides character formation in Indonesian schools. While cultural literacy is often linked with language and social studies, this research explores its integration into science learning in elementary schools. The aim is to identify how cultural values, local wisdom, and scientific inquiry are harmonized to support holistic student development through the Independent Curriculum. This qualitative study employed a phenomenological design, focusing on two Sekolah Penggerak (Driving Schools): Elementary School Muhammadiyah 1 Ketelan and Elementary School Muhammadiyah Plus Malangjiwan. Participants included school principals, teachers, and students. Data collection was conducted through observations and in-depth interviews, using structured interview sheets. Data were analyzed through data reduction, presentation, and conclusion drawing, with validity ensured through source triangulation. The results revealed that cultural literacy was embedded in science learning through the contextualization of scientific concepts with local wisdom such as using traditional tools in experiments, exploring environmental stewardship rooted in local customs, and incorporating indigenous knowledge into ecology topics. Activities like science-based cultural exhibitions, traditional games with scientific principles, and the use of regional languages in science discussions strengthened student engagement and cultural identity. This study offers a novel integration of cultural literacy into science education, demonstrating how localized, culturally responsive teaching can enrich scientific understanding while reinforcing national character in line with the Pancasila Student Profile.

Abstract

Misconceptions experienced by students must be identified, reduced, and remediated so that they do not become obstacles for students in their learning process. This study aims to reduce students' misconceptions about static fluids using interactive media developed using the Nearpod Platform based on Posner's conceptual change theory. The research design used was a one-group pre-test post-test design study, by conducting a pre-test, providing actions or treatments, and post-tests to 31 sample high school students. The test instruments and interactive media were first developed with a fairly strict validation process regarding content, construct, and face. Data analysis was carried out using the Wilcoxon Signed Rank Test to measure the effectiveness of the learning platform in reducing misconceptions. Based on the results of the study, it can be concluded that the application of the Nearpod interactive learning platform based on Posner's conceptual change theory can significantly reduce students' misconceptions of the material of hydrostatic pressure and Archimedes' law, with a decrease in the percentage of misconceptions from an average of 34.83% in the pretest to 18.06% in the posttest. Therefore, the Conceptual Change Text strategy through Nearpod media has effectively reduced misconceptions.

Abstract

This study aims to investigate the effectiveness of the Partial Rootzone Drying (PRD) irrigation method, the application of goat manure as organic fertilizer, and the interaction of both treatments on the growth and yield of tomato plants (Lycopersicum esculentum Mill) in North Sumatra. The research responds to the urgent need for sustainable agricultural practices that conserve water and enhance soil fertility, especially in tropical regions facing irregular rainfall and declining soil quality. A field experiment was conducted using a factorial randomized block design to test various levels of goat manure combined with the PRD technique. Observations focused on vegetative growth parameters (plant height, number of leaves, dry weight, chlorophyll content, Relative Growth Rate), nutrient uptake (N, P, and K), and production indicators (fruit number and sugar content). Data were analyzed statistically to determine the significance and interaction effects of treatments. The results show that goat manure significantly improves vegetative growth and fruit production, with higher doses correlating positively to increases in biomass and nutrient uptake. The PRD method led to a 25% reduction in water use without compromising plant productivity. Importantly, the combination of PRD and organic manure application produced synergistic effects, enhancing both growth and yield while optimizing water and nutrient efficiency. This study introduces a novel integrated approach to tomato cultivation that combines precision irrigation (PRD) and organic soil enrichment, offering a replicable model for sustainable, water-efficient horticulture in resource-constrained agricultural regions.
