Abstract

Speakers and speech partners in a speech event cannot be separated from the rules governing the act of using language so that speech can run well. One of the language principles in pragmatic studies is the cooperative principle or Grice's cooperative maxims which divide the principles in question namely, 1) maxim of quantity, 2) maxim of quality, 3) maxim of relevance ( maxim of relevance), and 4) maxim of manner. This research was conducted to find out the application of Grice's cooperation maxims in speech events in the market. The population of this study are all traders and buyers who are transacting within the market scope. Whereas, Sampling was determined using random sampling technique or random sampling by taking as many as 10 to 15 conversational samples in trader and buyer transactions. Data collection is carried out by tapping or recording techniques. Data analysis was carried out in three stages, namely, data reduction, data modeling, and drawing/verifying conclusions. It is obtained that three out of the four Grice cooperation maxims are fulfilled. This conclusion is drawn from the results of processing or analysis of data obtained during the research. The three maxims fulfilled include; 1) maxim of quantity, 2) maxim of quality, and 3) maxim of manner. Meanwhile, the maxim that is violated is the maxim of relevance. One of the reasons why the maxim of relevance is violated by traders is to divert attention. This aims to offer or introduce other merchandise when the goods needed by the buyer are not available or out of stock.

Abstract

This study sought to identify the various types of learning techniques used by Muhammadiyah Sidenreng Rappang University students enrolled in the English education study program. Seventy-five first-semester students who were enrolled in a basic English grammar course served as the study's subjects. Data collection and analysis were conducted using descriptive quantitative. The study's findings indicated that metacognition (20, 93%), cognitive (18, 49%), social (17, 83%), affective (16, 48%), memory (15, 97%), and compensatory (10, 25%) were the learning strategies that students used the least when studying grammar. Additionally, the ability to focus on a specific grammar pattern, attempt to grasp it, and make connections to previously learned material is another reason why students frequently employ metacognitive strategies when studying grammar. As a result, it is recommended that teachers should be aware of the various learning strategies and then assist the students as they study in order to improve learning outcomes.

Abstract

Through television broadcasts, electronic and online platforms, as well as printed media, the public can readily access information about a variety of brands, presented through captivating images and compelling text. Undeniably, the most potent force in advertising lies in the utilization of language that can transform the perceptions and viewpoints of potential consumer groups. This study's primary objective is to deconstruct the advertising strategies employed by two competing beauty product brands, aiming to win over the favor of potential customers. While prior research has delved into the ideological aspects of beauty advertisements using Critical Discourse Analysis, there remains a scarcity of studies that undertake a comparative analysis of local and international beauty products. To accumulate data, this study closely examined the promotional materials of two rival beauty product brands, they are: Scarlett and Skintific which is prominently featured on the online platform YouTube. The analysis adopted the Critical Discourse Analysis framework developed by Norman Fairclough, encompassing three interconnected dimensions: the textual content itself, the underlying discourse practices, and the broader socio-cultural context. The outcomes unveiled that the textual components within the advertisements were meticulously constructed to evoke persuasion and resonate with the emotions of potential buyers. Additionally, these textual elements contributed to amplifying existing realities while also shaping specific narratives within society, ultimately guiding the advertisements toward the ultimate goal of invoking empathy from potential consumers
