Abstract

Pregnancy, a natural process, entails physiological discomfort, such as vaginal discharge. This discharge is categorized as normal (physiological) or abnormal (pathological). Normal discharge is colorless, odorless, and not excessive, while abnormal discharge is cloudy, thick, and may have unpleasant odors and itchiness. This study in the coastal area of Bengkulu City aims to identify characteristics of pregnant women and explore predisposing factors for vaginal discharge. Utilizing a quantitative survey method with 107 purposively sampled pregnant women, the study focused on independent variables like Knowledge and Personal Hygiene, with vaginal discharge as the dependent variable. The results indicate that over half of the respondents (57%) demonstrated good knowledge, 52.3% exhibited good personal hygiene behavior, and 61% experienced physiological vaginal discharge. In conclusion, knowledge and personal hygiene emerge as critical factors influencing vaginal discharge in pregnant women.

Abstract

This study aimed to investigate the impact of Advertising Campaigns and Positive Close Relatives on exclusive breastfeeding practices among mothers in the postpartum period. A cross-sectional study was conducted among 66 mothers with infants aged 6-11 months in the Rasanae Timur Primary Health Care area in Kota Bima, NTB. Data were collected through structured interviews. Bivariate and multivariate analyses were employed to assess the associations between independent variables (Advertising Campaign, Positive Close Relatives) and the dependent variable (exclusive breastfeeding). The study found significant associations between exclusive breastfeeding and Advertising Campaigns, as well as Positive Close Relatives. Mothers exposed to Advertising Campaigns were more likely to opt for formula feeding over exclusive breastfeeding. Conversely, positive Positive Close Relatives, including encouragement and practical assistance, correlated with higher rates of exclusive breastfeeding. However, Maternal Occupation did not demonstrate a significant impact on exclusive breastfeeding practices. These findings underscore the critical role of both external influences, such as Advertising Campaign, and internal familial support in shaping maternal infant feeding decisions.

Abstract

Premarital sexual behavior in adolescents tends to increase. This is caused by several factors, one of which is low knowledge about sexual behavior. Knowledge in adolescents is one of the duties of parents. Therefore, communication between parents and adolescents is important. This study aims to determine the relationship between parental communication and knowledge about sexual behavior in adolescents. The research method used is a descriptive correlation with a cross-sectional approach. The population of this study is adolescents aged 12-15 years living at home with their parents. The number of samples was 114 The research instrument used a knowledge questionnaire and FARBCS. The data analysis used was univariate and bivariate analysis with bivariate analysis using the Spearman rank test. The results showed that 51.8% of the 114 respondents had adequate knowledge and 88.6% of respondents had open communication. The results of the correlation test showed a p-value of 0.884. The conclusion from this study is that there is no relationship between parental communication and knowledge about sexual behavior in adolescents. It is hoped that future researchers will examine the factors that influence knowledge about sexual behavior.

Abstract

The COVID-19 pandemic has markedly impacted mental health worldwide, with social isolation being a significant factor contributing to increased anxiety and depression. This research explores the psychological effects of prolonged social isolation during and after the pandemic. The study aims to assess the prevalence of anxiety and depression, identify associated risk factors, and propose effective interventions. The hypothesis posits that increased social isolation correlates with heightened levels of anxiety and depression. The population for this study includes adults aged 18-65 from both urban and rural areas. 500 participants were selected using stratified random sampling to ensure a diverse demographic representation. This cross-sectional study adopts a mixed-methods approach, combining quantitative surveys and qualitative interviews. Data collection tools include the Generalized Anxiety Disorder (GAD-7) scale and the Patient Health Questionnaire (PHQ-9), along with semi-structured interview guides. Quantitative data were analyzed using statistical techniques such as regression analysis, while qualitative data were undergone thematic analysis. The results offer insights into the mental health challenges posed by social isolation and suggest evidence-based solutions to mitigate these effects.

Abstract

Domestic violence (DV) has significant mental health consequences, including depression. Social support plays a critical role in mitigating these effects. This study aims to explore the relationship between social support and depression levels among domestic violence victims. The research employed a correlational, cross-sectional design, collecting data via questionnaires. The instruments used included demographic data, the Social Support Questionnaire-6 (SSQ-6) to assess social support, and the Patient Health Questionnaire-9 (PHQ-9) to measure depression levels. The study population consisted of 40 women victims of domestic violence who had reported their cases to the UPTD PPA in West Java Province. Bivariate data analysis was conducted using the Spearman test. The majority of respondents were aged 25-44 (57.5%), had a high school education (40%), were unemployed (75%), and had experienced psychological violence (30%). A notable 62.5% of respondents reported insufficient social support, and 45% were found to have moderate depression. The analysis revealed a significant relationship between social support and depression levels (p-value= 0.005, <0.05). These findings confirm that there is a significant association between social support and depression levels in domestic violence victims.

Abstract

Infection prevention and control (IPC) is essential in reducing healthcare-associated infections, particularly in maternal and newborn care. Midwives play a critical role in ensuring adherence to IPC protocols in primary healthcare settings. This study aims to assess the knowledge, attitudes, and practices of midwives toward IPC in selected primary health care centers in Osogbo Local Government, Osun State, Nigeria. A cross-sectional survey was conducted among 52 midwives using a structured questionnaire to assess their knowledge and attitudes on IPC. The data were analyzed using descriptive statistics, with results presented as frequencies and percentages. The study found high IPC knowledge among midwives, with 96.2% classified as having good knowledge. Most participants demonstrated a strong understanding of key practices, such as hand hygiene, PPE use, and waste disposal. For example, 98.1% correctly identified the proper order for donning PPE, and all understood its primary purpose. However, 84.6% were aware of the recommended frequency for disinfecting high-touch surfaces, highlighting a gap in daily IPC practices. Midwives showed a positive attitude, with 88.5% agreeing that IPC guidelines reduce infection rates. Despite this, 9.6% felt resources were inadequate, and 84.6% called for more IPC training. The study shows strong IPC knowledge and positive attitudes among midwives, though gaps in resources and daily practices exist. Continuous training, better resource allocation, and fostering accountability are recommended to maintain high IPC standards. Targeted interventions should address these gaps and support midwives in effective IPC implementation.

Abstract

Leading causes of death in Japan include stroke and ischemic heart disease (IHD). It has been unclear regarding risk for these diseases among sexual and gender minorities (SGMs) in Japan. Using cross-sectional data from JACSIS (Japan COVID-19 and Society Internet Survey) 2022, participants were categorized in cisgender/heterosexual, lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender based on sex at birth, gender identity and sexual orientation. Outcome was measured by past history of stroke or IHD. Multivariable logistic regression was constructed adjusting for risk factors. 24,298 participants were eligible for analysis. Overweight/obesity was prevalent among gay and bisexual participants, while lesbians and transgenders were implausible compared to cisgender/heterosexuals. After adjusting for potential covariates, all SGM groups experienced increased prevalence of stroke (transgender odds ratio [OR], 2.97; 95% CI, 1.74-5.06, gay OR, 2.69; 95%CI, 2.00-3.64, lesbian OR, 2.44; 95%CI, 1.0-3.40, bisexual OR, 1.86; 95% CI, 1.01-3.40) and IHD (transgender OR, 2.92; 95%CI, 1.75-4.86, gay OR, 2.18; 95%CI, 1.64-2.91, lesbian OR, 1.96; 95%CI, 1.32-2.93, bisexual OR, 1.23; 95% CI, 0.65-2.31) compared to cisgender/heterosexuals. SGMs in Japan have different prevalence of cardiovascular risk factors compared to Western countries. SGMs face higher prevalence of stroke or IHD, and transgenders were most vulnerable. There is much need in support for the health of SGMs in Japan.
