Abstract

This study aims to determine teachers' perceptions of the concept of gamification learning models in vocabulary learning in Elementary Schools. Several opinion analyses are discussed in depth, reviewed from the topic of readiness for learning implementation, effectiveness, and its influence in improving vocabulary memorization skills. This type of research is descriptive qualitative with elementary school teachers from a number of schools and different grade levels as subjects. The data collection technique was carried out through interviews, namely by displaying a number of questions in a form that was filled in directly in the form of an opinion description. The results of the study showed that teachers were not yet ready to apply the gamification learning model, because their provisions and foundations in developing new teaching methods were still minimal. Teachers need technical guidance regarding insights into planning and technological innovation. However, teachers believe that the concept of gamification will be effective if applied in teaching English vocabulary. This model is quite interesting, presenting interactive features in it that can form a collaborative learning between peers so as to foster social values, skills and enthusiasm for learning.

Abstract

This study investigates the English pronunciation performance of Islamic Education students at UIN Sulthan Thaha Saifuddin Jambi. Forty undergraduate students participated by submitting a 1–2 minute spoken monologue on the topic of “friendship.” Each performance was evaluated using a rubric adapted from the University of Colorado, assessing five pronunciation aspects: individual sounds, word stress and endings, intonation and rhythm, fluency and hesitation, and overall comprehensibility. The findings revealed that the overall mean score was low (1.32 out of 4), with the majority (80%) categorized as having “Ineffective” pronunciation. Word stress and endings posed the greatest challenge, while fluency had a slightly higher average. Only a few students demonstrated satisfactory pronunciation, marked by clearer articulation, better rhythm, and fewer hesitations. Qualitative observations supported these findings by identifying frequent errors in segmental and suprasegmental features. The results highlight an urgent need for explicit pronunciation instruction within the English curriculum of Islamic Education programs. The study recommends integrating phonetic training, pronunciation-focused tasks, and digital tools to improve learners’ speaking skills. Future research should explore the long-term development of pronunciation and the impact of targeted interventions.

Abstract

This study scrutinizes fathers' involvement in children's English learning at home. Employing a case study, this study involved four fathers aged between 31 and 45. The data were collected using in-depth interviews. The findings of the study indicate that there are several inhibiting and supporting factors for parenting self-efficacy (PSE). These factors include support and communication with partners, child characteristics, media influence, knowledge and education, culture and social values, and workload. In addition, PSE contributes to fathers' involvement in English learning at home. PSE can also be a protective factor from various obstacles and resource limitations. Fathers with high PSE can turn challenges into opportunities. This study also reveals that fathers' involvement efforts still need to be improved so that family functioning will be more optimal.

Abstract

This study aims to integrate the oral tradition of Mangambat into Indonesian and English language teaching materials in schools located in the Mandailing ethnic area, North Sumatra. Mangambat is a cultural tradition that functions as a ceremony to prevent the bride from being carried by the groom, using typical dialogue. This study uses a feasibility study design to evaluate the materials developed based on this tradition. The instrument used is a material feasibility checklist, which includes 15 assessment items related to the relevance, systematics, and impact of the material on learning. The trial was conducted on 16 10th grade high school students in Medan, and the results showed that the teaching materials involving Mangambat were well received by students, with a high average score on the quizzes tested. This study concludes that integrating oral traditions into the curriculum can enrich language learning while preserving local culture. The implication is that there needs to be further efforts in developing and implementing local wisdom-based teaching materials that can be used sustainably in formal education.

Abstract

Translation requires changing the forms of SL to reach the naturalness of TL, which frequently results in a shift. Shift or transposition is a crucial translation element, as providing the text with a good equivalent in the target language is not always feasible. This research aims to identify translation unit shifts and determine the aspects influencing each shift. The unit shift theory applied in this study is based on J.C. Catford’s translation shift theory. The aspects that cause or influence each unit shift in the unit analysis are based on Mildred L. Larson’s theory. This research was conducted as a descriptive qualitative study. The study focuses on the words, phrases, and sentences in Reclaim Your Heart and their translations that change during translation. The writer analysed the data to identify the unit shift from the source text to the target text. The shift patterns are determined following the unit categorisation. The observed patterns of unit shift in the translation of Reclaim Your Heart to Rebut Kembali Hatimu include shifts from morpheme to word, word to phrase, phrase to word, sentence to phrase, and sentence to clause. The factors that influenced translation and caused the unit shift occur because there are some aspects of language: lexical and grammatical.

Abstract

This study analyzes Tim Blake Nelson’s “O” (2001) as a modern film adaptation of William Shakespeare’s “Othello”, with particular attention to the representation of Blackness and how it is reshaped or obscured in the cinematic form. Using a qualitative, interpretative textual analysis method, the research explores how racial identity, which is central in the original play, becomes muted or recontextualized in the film adaptation. The study applies adaptation theory, semiotic analysis, and critical race theory to examine both narrative and visual elements of the film—including dialogue, characterization, cinematography, and symbolism. Through a comparative framework, the analysis identifies key thematic shifts, such as the movement from overt racial tension in “Othello” to internal psychological conflict in “O”. Visual aids and a comparative table support the findings, illustrating the adaptation’s emphasis on personal trauma over racial discourse. The results reveal how the film strategically downplays racial markers, offering a layered yet potentially problematic reading of race in contemporary adaptation. This research contributes to broader discussions of race, identity, and representation in Shakespearean film adaptations.

Abstract

This study examines the discourse structure and interpersonal meaning in selected dialogues from The Old Man and the Sea, with a focus on moves and speech functions. Using a qualitative descriptive method, it applies Halliday’s moves and speech functions analysis to explore how grammatical forms, interrogatives, declaratives, and imperatives, perform pragmatic and interpersonal functions beyond their literal meanings. The analysis reveals a predominance of ‘k’ type moves or information exchange, including k2, k1, k1f, and k2f, over ‘a’ type moves or offers of service, which appear as a1, a1f, and a1. Declarative clauses are the most frequently used, encompassing structures such as RSQ, S, RRSQ, and AS. The findings highlight dynamic exchanges of knowledge and action, showing how dialogue advances the narrative and develops character relationships. Despite their brevity, Hemingway’s dialogues convey complex meanings, reflecting authentic interaction and his minimalist style. The study underscores the dual function of literary dialogue as a vehicle for both storytelling and social interaction.

Abstract

This study employs a descriptive qualitative method based on discourse analysis to examine the speech functions in French President Emmanuel Macron's victory speech, delivered on May 8, 2017. Guided by Halliday's theory of speech function, the research aimed at exploring how interpersonal meaning is realized through language in this significant political address. Data, consisting of the speech transcript was meticulously analyzed to identify patterns in mood and modality. The findings reveal a predominant use of statements, consistently realized through both full declarative clauses and declarative elliptical clauses. This dominance indicates that Macron's primary communicative purpose was to inform, assert, and establish his stance and intentions, delivering clear propositions and outlining future actions rather than engaging in direct questioning or commanding. The strategic combination of full and elliptical declaratives demonstrates Macron's articulation and his skill in structuring language for clarity and impact, ultimately conveying a resolute vision and fostering trust through declared commitments.
