Abstract

Pesantren Al-Mukmin Ngruki was established to educate students and shape them into a generation of Muslims who are ready to accept and practice Islam in its entirety (kaffah). However, Pesantren Al-Mukmin Ngruki is often labeled as a radical pesantren that teaches exclusive and intolerant religious beliefs, especially after the 2002 Bali bombing. The negative stigmas associated with this pesantren have caused issues for its organizers, especially since the institution is often linked to its founders. The negative accusations published by the media have also been highlighted by various parties on various occasions. Pesantren Al-Mukmin Ngruki’s curriculum has been accused of teaching terrorism and bomb assembly, and is still often labeled as a radical pesantren that produces terrorists. Therefore, this study will investigate the curriculum dynamics of Pesantren Al-Mukmin Ngruki to determine whether these accusations are supported by evidence. The researchers employed a qualitative research method with a historical approach, which contains four steps: heuristics, criticism, interpretation, and historiography. The results of this study reveal that the curriculum at Pesantren Al-Mukmin Ngruki is an integrated curriculum that combines the national curriculum from the Ministry of Education, Culture, Research, and Technology, with the pesantren curriculum. This curriculum aims to produce Muslim scholars and intellectuals, with a focus on Islamic religious education followed by general knowledge, science, and technology.

Abstract

This study is situated within the broader discourse on educational quality culture and strategic leadership, particularly in faith-based schooling contexts where institutional effectiveness is closely linked to value internalization and stakeholder alignment. This study aims to examine principals’ strategic management processes in implementing and sustaining quality culture in Islamic elementary schools. A qualitative multi-case study design was employed involving semi-structured interviews, non-participant observations, and document analysis, analyzed using an interactive data analysis model consisting of data condensation, data display, and conclusion drawing. Quality culture development operates through an integrated strategic cycle encompassing environmental scanning, participatory planning, value-based implementation, and reflective evaluation. Applications of this study: The findings are applicable to educational leadership, school management, quality assurance systems, and faith-based education development. The study integrates the Hunger and Wheelen strategic management framework with Islamic value institutionalization processes, producing an empirically grounded strategic leadership model for supporting quality culture development. Sustainable quality culture in Islamic elementary education is achieved through cyclical strategic alignment integrating institutional diagnostics, stakeholder engagement, ritualized character habituation, and developmental supervision systems.

Abstract

Financial management plays a strategic role in ensuring the effectiveness and quality of Islamic educational institutions, especially private madrasahs that depend heavily on School Operational Assistance (BOS) funds. This study explores the financial management practices at MTs Ash-Shalihin Gowa, focusing on how strategies grounded in local wisdom and Islamic values help address funding limitations without compromising educational quality or sustainability. Using a qualitative case study approach, data were collected through in-depth interviews, participatory observation, and document analysis. Key informants included the head of the foundation, the principal, and the treasurer, who provided insights into the planning, budgeting, control, and evaluation processes. Thematic analysis was used, and findings were validated through triangulation. Results show that effective financial management in the madrasah is built on collaborative governance that incorporates local wisdom, such as gotong royong (mutual cooperation), musyawarah (deliberation), and religious values like amanah (trust) and barakah (spiritual benefit). Budgeting was based on needs and priorities, supported by inclusive decision-making involving all stakeholders. The use of the digital E-RKAM system improved transparency and accountability yet was applied in a way that respected the madrasah’s ethical and religious culture. Regular internal and external evaluations supported a reflective and adaptive financial cycle. These evaluations extended beyond regulatory compliance and included community feedback, reinforcing the institution’s legitimacy and responsiveness. Financial efficiency was thus viewed not merely as cost-saving but as a form of ethical stewardship (khalifah) over communal resources. This study contributes to the theory of Islamic educational financial management by showing how local wisdom can enhance digital governance. It offers a practical model for other madrasahs to replicate, emphasizing the importance of aligning religious values, digital tools, and cultural practices in improving educational quality sustainably.

Abstract

With the rapid advancement of educational technology, students increasingly adapt their learning styles to digital platforms; however, integrating technology effectively into English as a Foreign Language (EFL) instruction remains a pedagogical challenge. Although the flipped classroom model has been widely explored in global contexts, limited evidence exists on how EFL students in Indonesia—particularly in Aceh—perceive and respond to this approach. Contextual factors such as internet access, lecturer readiness, and students’ digital habits may influence its effectiveness, yet remain underexplored. This study employed a qualitative design to examine university students’ perceptions of the flipped classroom model in EFL learning. Data were collected from 85 students in the third to fifth semesters across three universities in Aceh, all of whom had prior experience with the flipped classroom. The findings revealed that 68% of students perceived the model as more engaging and 67% recommended it to peers, and students’ perceptions were generally positive, as they valued the model’s interactivity, flexibility, and motivational impact, especially through video-based preparation and in-class collaboration. Four main themes emerged: learning effectiveness, use of video lessons, time management, and English mastery. The study highlights that contextual factors moderate the flipped classroom’s success in Aceh. Despite these challenges, the results validate its relevance for Generation Z learners and support its wider adoption in Indonesian higher education. Future research is recommended to conduct longitudinal or comparative studies across regions to deepen understanding of the model’s long-term and contextual impacts.

Abstract

This study investigates the role of Reje leadership in preserving the customs and cultural identity of the Gayo community in Kampung Keramat Mupakat. Utilizing a descriptive-analytical qualitative approach, the research examines the meanings, values, and practices of Reje leadership across four dimensions: religious, justice, cultural, and participatory. Data were collected through in-depth interviews, participatory observations, and the review of customary documents, and analyzed using the Miles, Huberman, and Saldaña model. The findings reveal that Reje leadership is grounded in the principle of ("customs based on sharia, sharia based on the Qur'an"), affirming the spiritual legitimacy of Gayo traditions. The justice dimension is reflected in deliberative consensus, ensuring inclusive, fair, and widely accepted decisions, thereby strengthening social harmony. The cultural dimension highlights the Reje's efforts to preserve local traditions such as melengkan, kenduri keramat, and the use of the Gayo language which are transmitted to younger generations as safeguards of identity. The participatory dimension emphasizes the inclusivity of Reje leadership through the involvement of customary, religious, and community leaders in every significant decision. Collectively, these four dimensions demonstrate that Reje leadership functions as a mediator of customary and Islamic values, a guardian of traditions, and an agent of cultural education. The study concludes that the Reje leadership model remains relevant and strategic in safeguarding Gayo customs and cultural identity amid the challenges of modernization, while also contributing significantly to academic discourse on leadership rooted in local wisdom in Indonesia.

Abstract

Papua faces significant environmental problems and agrarian conflicts due to the exploitation of natural resources. This condition underscores the urgent need for environmental education rooted in local wisdom to foster sustainable practices. This research aims to identify ecological elements within Kumpulan Cerita Rakyat Papua, a folklore collection published by Balai Bahasa Papua in 2017, and examine their relevance to environmental education policies in schools. Employing a qualitative descriptive method, this paper utilizes Greg Garrard’s ecocriticism framework to analyse these elements. Purposive stratified sampling was used to select representative samples from 19 stories, followed by thematic analysis to uncover key themes. Data validity was ensured through the principles of trustworthiness including credibility, dependability, confirmability, and transferability. The findings reveal prominent ecological elements such as wilderness, animals, dwelling, the earth, pollution, apocalypse, and pastoral motifs, illustrating a harmonious humans-nature relationship in Papuan culture. Papuan folklore serves as a vital medium for transmitting ecological knowledge, which can be seamlessly integrated into school curricula, particularly in Indonesian Language subjects. By integrating ecological values into education, this research advocates for building environmental awareness from an early age, empowering younger generations to contribute to nature preservation and effectively addressing agrarian conflicts in Papua, reducing resource-driven tensions through informed, community-based learning.

Abstract

This exploratory study examines the certification system of dayah (Islamic boarding schools) within Aceh Province as a strategic initiative aimed at improving the quality of Islamic education and reinforcing institutional governance. The study integrates data from contemporary empirical research, pertinent government regulations (Qanun Aceh No. 9/2018 and Pergub No. 64/2019), and the operational procedures of the Badan Akreditasi Dayah Aceh (BADA). Utilizing a comprehensive approach that encompasses literature review, organizational analysis, and policy evaluation, the findings indicate that accreditation serves as a pivotal mechanism for standardizing administrative processes, enhancing accountability, and advancing the professional development of educators. Nevertheless, the implementation of accreditation encounters challenges including limited resource availability, opposition to modernization initiatives, and conflicts between national benchmarks and local cultural traditions. Employing an exploratory qualitative methodology, the study highlights the imperative for a contextualized accreditation framework that harmonizes national quality standards with the cultural identity and autonomy intrinsic to dayahs. The study concludes with a proposed model to optimize accreditation efficacy through participatory governance, incorporation of digital innovations such as the E-SADA system, and adaptive leadership practices in dayah management.
