Abstract

Background: End-stage kidney disease (ESKD) represents an increasing health burden in Indonesia, with affected individuals experiencing complex needs that substantially diminish quality of life. Objective: aimed to identify palliative care needs among end-stage kidney disease patients undergoing hemodialysis. Methods: This cross-sectional study was conducted at a hemodialysis center in North Sulawesi in 2024. Respondents were selected using purposive sampling. The Sociodemographic Questionnaire and the Supportive and Palliative Care Indicators Tool (SPICT) were employed to collect sociodemographic data and identify potential palliative care needs. Univariate analysis was performed to examine palliative care needs among ESKD patients. Results: A total of 150 participants were included. Almost all respondents were identified as needing palliative care, with the majority presenting two general indicators and two clinical indicators. Conclusion: Nearly all patients with end-stage kidney disease undergoing haemodialysis are identified as having palliative care needs. This finding suggests the need to integrate routine palliative care assessment and services into patients with end- stage kidney disease, especially those in haemodialysis care to ensure comprehensive and patient-centered management of physical, psychosocial, and spiritual needs.

Abstract

Abstrak: Background: Type 1 Diabetes requires complex lifelong care, increasing parental stress. The COVID-19 pandemic exacerbated this burden through disrupted healthcare, limited social support, and financial strain, particularly in Indonesia, where evidence on influencing factors remains limited. Methods: Cross-sectional research with consecutive sampling was conducted in the Family Association of Diabetes Sufferers in Children and Adolescents Indonesia. This study involved 136 parents who met the inclusion criteria. Multivariate linear regression analysis was performed to identify the relationship between parental characteristics and situational factors on parenting stress. A standard questionnaire and a self-administered questionnaire were used in this research. Results: The analysis demonstrated significant relationships between several variables and parenting stress. Specifically, economic status (p=0.006), marital status (p=0.031), healthcare system challenges during COVID-19 pandemic (p=0.000), social support (p=0.003), and coping mechanisms for children’s illness (p=0.047) were significantly associated with the frequency of parenting stress. Additionally, there were significant relationships between economic status (p=0.000), health care system challenges during the COVID-19 pandemic (p=0.001), and social support (p=0.015) with parenting stress based on parental difficulties. Conclusions: This study identified that parents’ coping mechanisms for managing their child’s illness and the availability of social support are critical factors influencing parenting stress. Notably, higher levels of social support were associated with lower parenting stress. These findings underscore the importance of integrating social support networks and targeted nursing interventions to alleviate parental stress and improve caregiving outcomes. Keywords: Parenting stress, Type 1 diabetes, COVID-19 pandemic, Cross-sectional study.

Abstract

Background: Patients with cancer undergoing chemotherapy experience complex physical and psychological problems that require comprehensive nursing care. Nurses’ caring behaviors are important in improving the quality of care provided to patients. However, existing instruments for measuring caring behaviors remain limited, particularly those grounded in Swanson’s Theory of Caring. Therefore, this study aimed to develop conceptual domains and generate items to measure nurses’ caring behaviors toward patients with cancer receiving chemotherapy. Objective: To develop a new conceptual framework in the form of domains and produce statement items through a qualitative approach. Methods: This study used a phenomenological approach as the first phase of an instrument development study. In-depth interviews were conducted with 10 participants receiving chemotherapy, selected through purposive sampling. The interviews were recorded and transcribed digitally, and the data were analyzed using content analysis in NVivo 10 to identify codes, categories, and themes to develop conceptual domains and item statements. Results: A total of 33 statement items were developed from five main domains. The first domain was respect for culture (5 items); the second, information provision (6 items); the third, responsiveness (7 items); the fourth, competence (9 items); and the fifth, overall motivation (6 items). Conclusion: This study generated five domains, comprising 33 positive and negative statement items, that will be used in the questionnaire to measure cancer patients undergoing chemotherapy's perceptions of nurses' behavior.
