Abstract

This research aimed to identify the reproductive characteristics of Gayo buffaloes in the Mesidah Sub-district, Bener Meriah Regency. There were three locations of the current study namely Perumpaken Benjadi, Wer Tingkem, and Simpur, which were determined using the purposivesampling technique. A survey was used as the research method to obtain primary data and secondary data. Primary data were collected throughdirect interviews with buffalo livestock owners. They were asked a set of questions that had been prepared in a questionnaire. Secondary datawere obtained from related agencies in Bener Meriah Regency. The number of respondents was 92 from four villages in the Mesidah Sub-district,Bener Meriah Regency. Breeders as respondents were selected using a purposive sampling method, with minimum requirements that they hadraised two buffaloes that had given birth more than once and that the breeders had at least four years of farming experience. The research datawere analyzed using descriptive statistic. The results showed that the Gayo buffaloes in the Mesidah Sub-district, Bener Meriah Regency, had reproductive characteristics that met the standards. This can be seen from the obtained data which were almost the same as the average age of the reproductive characteristics of buffaloes in Indonesia. Gayo buffaloes in the Mesidah Sub-district experienced the first estrus (puberty) at 33.83 months old, first mating at 34.61 months old, and first calving at 45.29 months. The average gestation period was 10.51 months, the calving interval was 15.5 months, and the average service period was 3.66 months, while maintenance management was carried out extensively. Based on the results, it can be concluded that the reproductive characteristics of Gayo buffaloes in the Mesidah Sub-district, Bener Meriah Regency, still meet the standards. The average reproductive characteristics of Gayo buffaloes are generally the same as the average characteristics of other buffaloes in Indonesia.

Abstract

A pair of cross-sectional studies was conducted to determine prevalence and risk factors of Strongyloides spp. (threadworm) infections in beef cattle in Kasiman Subdistrict, the Regency of Bojonegoro. A total of 263 and 270 of local beef cattle with various age were selected for faecal sample during dry season (August-October) and wet season (February-March), respectively. Feces were processed for counting the number of eggs per gram feces (EPG) using McMaster method. The prevalence of strongyloidosis was 4.56% and 7.04% in the dry season and the rainy season, respectively. The factors that associated with prevalence and intensity infection were age and sex of cattle. During the dry season and the rainy season, the calf and weaner group (1 year) was more susceptible for Strongyloides infection than cattle with older age and showed higher intensity of infection (based on EPG values). The bulls showed a higher risk and intensity of infection than cows.

Abstract

The purpose of this research was to study the effect of different level of protein addition in goat ration on feed addition in the ration on feed intake and physiological responses of Saburai goats (rectal temperature, respiratory rate, and heart rate). Twenty male Saburai goats were randomly divided into 4 treatments group with 5 goats each. Goats in group 1 (PO) were fed with forage, while goats in group 2 (P1), 3 (P2), and 4 (P3) were fed with forage + concentratre with 13%, 16%, and 19% crude protein, respectively. The treatments were P0= feeding forage, P1= feeding forage + concentrate with 13% crude protein (CP), P2= feeding forage + concentrate with 16% CP, and P3 feeding forage + concentrate with 19% CP. The results showed that the rectal temperature and heart rate did not significantly affected (P0.05) in all treatment, however the heart rate was significantly (P0.05) affected among the treatments. The conclusion is the addition of different protein level in the ration has no effect on rectal temperature and respiratory rate, but significantly increases the heart rate frequency.

Abstract

This study aims to describe ultrasonographic imaging of the spleen, stomach, liver, kidney, bladder, and prostate in piglets (Sus scrofa domestica). Ultrasonography was performed on six male piglets aged 1 month with a body weight of 4-8 kg. Ultrasonography of the spleen, stomach, liver, urinary bladder, and prostate was observed in the dorsal-recumbency position, and the kidney was observed in the lateral-recumbency position. The ultrasound examination used the Chison EBit 60, which is a linear type transducer with a frequency of 9 MHz, transverse and sagittal positions, and a gain of about 55-80. Ultrasonography of the spleen showed that the shape of the spleen head varied in each individual. The results of gastric ultrasonography showed the gastric lining clearly and the similarity of the position, shape, structure, echogenicity, and size of the stomach. The results of liver ultrasonography showed that the echogenicity of the liver tended to be hyperechoic, the kidneys were hyperechoic, and the bladder was hypoechoic due to the use of improper gain. The average length of the right kidney was 4.730.50 cm and the left kidney was 4.080.26 cm. The bladder wall thickness was 1.30.31 mm. Imaging of the bladder showed changes in wall size and echogenicity. Prostate ultrasound results obtained an average length of 2.680.45 cm, width 1.690.35 cm. The results of this study can be used as a reference for normal data on organ position, organ structure, and organ echogenicity of the spleen, stomach, liver, kidney, bladder, and prostate in piglets.

Abstract

The aim of this study was to further understand the histomorphometry of seminiferous tubules from local goat testicles that were fixed with different fixatives. Nine testicles were randomly chosen, each fixed with 10% formalin, 10% neutral buffered formalin (NBF), and 4% paraformaldehyde (PFA) solutions. The sample was then proceeded to histology preparation and stained with haematoxylin eosin (HE). Observation of the tissue was carried out using microscope and the data obtained was analyzed statistically. The results showed that there was a significant difference (P0.05) on each fixative in tubular diameter and membrane, and very significant difference (P0.01) on germinal cell and staining absorbability. Duncan test result on tubular diameter showed that the use of PFA fixative was significantly different (P0.05) compared to formalin fixative while the use of NBF fixative had no significant difference (P0.05) compared to PFA fixative. In addition, the measurement of interstitial membrane of seminiferous tubules showed no significant difference (P0.05) among three fixatives. To conclude, formalin, NBF, and PFA fixatives affect seminiferous tubules, basal membrane structure, and germinal cell appearance inside tubular lumen. Type of tissues and fixative must be considered in selecting the suitable fixative.
