Abstract

Writing exposition texts remains a significant challenge for senior high school students, particularly in generating ideas, developing coherent arguments, and organizing texts systematically. This study investigates how the integration of local wisdom through digital media contributes to students’ learning experiences and writing development by addressing the following questions: how do students perceive the learning process, and how does this instructional approach support their exposition text writing? Employing a descriptive qualitative design, the study involved 25 senior high school students. Primary data were collected through classroom observations, semi-structured interviews, and documentation, while secondary data were obtained from relevant scholarly literature. The data were analyzed through data reduction, data display, and conclusion drawing, with source triangulation employed to enhance the credibility of the findings. The results demonstrate that integrating local wisdom with digital media facilitates idea generation, strengthens student engagement, and promotes a more contextual and meaningful learning experience. Nevertheless, many students continue to encounter difficulties in organizing arguments and maintaining coherent exposition text structures. The study concludes that this instructional approach provides a valuable pedagogical framework for enhancing exposition writing, although additional instructional support is required to improve students’ organizational and argumentative writing skills.

Abstract

The Mappalili tradition represents an important component of Bugis agrarian culture that preserves linguistic expressions alongside the community’s cultural identity. This study aims to analyze the linguistic elements embedded in the Mappalili tradition, examine the linguistic structures of its prayers and ritual chants, and explore their symbolic meanings and cultural values. The research employed a mixed-method approach by integrating quantitative and qualitative techniques. Data were collected through questionnaires administered to 133 respondents, in-depth interviews with community leaders and farmers, and participant observation. Quantitative data were analyzed using SPSS, while qualitative data were examined with ATLAS.ti to identify linguistic patterns and cultural themes. The findings demonstrate that Mappalili embodies diverse linguistic components, including phonological, morphological, syntactic, semantic, and pragmatic features, which are closely intertwined with the agrarian, religious, and social values of the Bugis community. The study argues that Mappalili serves not only as a cultural ritual but also as a significant medium for preserving and revitalizing the classical Bugis language through educational initiatives and culturally oriented language preservation policies.

Abstract

The rapid growth of digital advertising has transformed the use of language into a strategic tool for conveying information and persuading consumers, particularly in digital wallet advertisements disseminated through YouTube. This study aims to describe the lexical and grammatical meanings embedded in the language of digital wallet advertisements on YouTube. A descriptive qualitative approach was employed using data comprising words, phrases, and sentences extracted from the official advertisements of DANA, GoPay, OVO, and ShopeePay uploaded between February and September 2025. Data were collected through digital observation and note-taking and analyzed using the interactive model of Miles and Huberman. The findings identified six instances of lexical meaning and eight instances of grammatical meaning. Lexical meanings retained their dictionary definitions independent of grammatical context, whereas grammatical meanings emerged through morphological processes, including prefixation, suffixation, circumfixation, and compounding. These linguistic patterns demonstrate that lexical meaning primarily facilitates clear and explicit product communication, while grammatical meaning reinforces persuasive intent, strengthens consumer trust, and enhances the communicative effectiveness of digital advertising discourse. This study extends semantic research by providing a comprehensive analysis of lexical and grammatical meanings across the complete discourse of digital wallet advertisements on YouTube.

Abstract

This study investigates the psychological dynamics of the main character in Edgar Allan Poe’s The Tell-Tale Heart through the lens of Sigmund Freud’s psychoanalytic theory. The research addresses the question of how the interaction of the id, ego, and superego shapes the protagonist’s psychological conflict and influences his irrational behavior throughout the narrative. Employing a descriptive qualitative design, the study utilizes textual analysis to interpret the character’s thoughts, actions, and emotional responses based on Freud’s structural model of personality. The findings reveal that the protagonist’s obsessive fixation on the old man’s eye originates from the id, whereas the ego proves incapable of regulating these instinctual impulses in a rational manner. Following the murder, the superego intensifies feelings of guilt and moral anxiety, ultimately manifesting in auditory hallucinations that compel the protagonist to confess his crime. The study concludes that Freud’s psychoanalytic framework offers a comprehensive explanation of the protagonist’s internal conflict, illustrating that unconscious psychological forces significantly shape human behavior and decision-making in literary narratives while enriching the application of psychoanalytic literary criticism.

Abstract

Justin Bieber's performance of "Beauty and a Beat" at the 2026 Coachella Festival sparked extensive public discussion on TikTok, particularly over his altered vocal style and his use of a laptop during the live performance. This study investigates how audiences interpreted and responded to the performance by examining how perlocutionary acts are manifested in TikTok comments. Drawing upon J. L. Austin's speech act theory, the research employs a qualitative descriptive approach to analyze 100 TikTok comments related to the performance. The findings identify several categories of perlocutionary effects, with nostalgia emerging as the predominant audience response, indicating that viewers interpreted the performance through both emotional and experiential lenses. These results demonstrate that contemporary musical performances operate not merely as entertainment but also as communicative events that shape audience emotions, perceptions, and patterns of digital interaction. The study argues that applying perlocutionary speech act theory to social media discourse broadens the scope of digital pragmatics by providing deeper insights into audience engagement within online participatory cultures.

Abstract

Pantun occupies a central position in the Langkat Malay wedding tradition as a medium for transmitting cultural values, social norms, and collective identity; however, the symbolic meanings embedded in the Hempang Pintu and Makan Beradab oral traditions have not been comprehensively examined through Peircean semiotics. This study investigates how icons, indices, and symbols are constructed in pantuns performed during these traditions and explores the cultural meanings they convey. Employing a descriptive qualitative approach, the research analyzed 85 pantun stanzas from four traditional wedding processions using Charles Sanders Peirce's triadic semiotic model, supported by observation, note-taking, and in-depth interviews. The findings identified 20 icons, 28 indices, and 76 symbols, indicating that symbolic signs dominate because pantuns predominantly communicate figurative meanings and culturally shared conventions. The symbolic meanings encompass religiosity, Malay cultural identity, respect for customary traditions, protection of the bride's dignity, and moral guidance for married life. The study contributes a novel systematic mapping of the distribution of icons, indices, and symbols across the four Hempang Pintu and Makan Beradab processions in Hinai District and demonstrates that pantun functions as a dynamic system of cultural communication that plays a vital role in preserving Malay cultural heritage amid ongoing modernization.

Abstract

This study investigates the contextual meanings conveyed through Uta's utterances in the Indonesian subtitle translation of One Piece Film: Red to examine how contextual elements shape meaning and how effectively these meanings are retained in audiovisual translation. The research addresses the question of whether the Indonesian subtitles successfully preserve the contextual meanings, communicative intentions, and emotional nuances embedded in the source language despite the linguistic and technical constraints of subtitling. A descriptive qualitative approach was employed by analyzing Uta's translated utterances, which were classified into seven contextual dimensions: participants, situation, communicative purpose, emotional state, time, place, and topic of discussion. The analysis identified 66 contextual meaning instances, with emotional context emerging as the most dominant category, indicating that emotional expression constitutes the central semantic feature of Uta's dialogue. The findings further demonstrate that the Indonesian subtitles generally maintain the intended contextual meanings and communicative functions of the original utterances, although certain lexical simplifications occur to accommodate subtitle limitations. These results underscore that a comprehensive understanding of contextual meaning is essential for producing accurate, natural, and communicatively effective subtitle translations in audiovisual media.

Abstract

Literary works not only represent social realities but also transmit educational values through characters, conflicts, and social interactions. This study examines how social and educational values are represented in Panji Wijaya’s novella Jejak Kaki di Tanah Luka from the perspective of literary sociology. Employing a qualitative descriptive method with content analysis, the study uses the novella as its primary source, while textual excerpts containing social and educational values constitute the research data. Data were collected through literature review, close reading, and note-taking and were analyzed through data reduction, classification, presentation, and conclusion drawing. The findings reveal social values encompassing social solidarity, social concern, mutual cooperation, sacrifice, nationalism, unity, social leadership, and respect for national heroes. The novella also embodies educational values related to morality, social responsibility, religiosity, character formation, and nationalism. These values are represented through the characters’ actions, behaviors, and interpersonal interactions throughout the narrative. The study concludes that Jejak Kaki di Tanah Luka functions not merely as a literary work for aesthetic enjoyment but also as a medium of social reflection and education that communicates socially and morally significant values to its reader.

Abstract

This study examines how Aristotle’s rhetorical appeals—ethos, pathos, and logos—are employed in TikTok live selling by influencer Sheila Shaukia (@shellasaukia) to construct persuasive communication and stimulate consumer purchase intentions. The research addresses the question of how classical rhetorical principles are adapted within contemporary live commerce environments. Using a descriptive qualitative design and content analysis, data were collected from five TikTok live selling sessions conducted between January and April 2026. The findings indicate that persuasive effectiveness emerges from the strategic integration of the three rhetorical appeals. Ethos is developed through credibility, entrepreneurial identity, and social legitimacy; pathos is manifested through emotional engagement, religiously resonant storytelling, and the creation of urgency; while logos is conveyed through value-based pricing, product demonstrations, and real-time social proof. The analysis further reveals that these rhetorical strategies operate dynamically and interactively throughout live selling sessions, strengthening audience trust and purchase intention. This study concludes that Aristotle’s rhetorical framework remains highly relevant in the digital marketplace and argues that its contemporary adaptation is reflected in the concepts of auditable ethos, spiritually resonant emotional pathos, and real-time social proof logos, thereby extending rhetorical theory within the context of social commerce and digital marketing.
