Abstract

This study raises the main issue of the religiosity of Muslim Baduy after converting to Islam in Leuwidamar, Lebak-Banten. The discussion aims to reveal the factors and the process of converting to Islam, to discover the religious behavior after converting to Islam and the impact of religious conversion on social and cultural changes of Muslim Baduy. The research is a descriptive-analytic study with an ethnographic method by using participant observation, in-depth interviews and documentation techniques. By using Rambo’s theory on the religious conversion stages and Glock and Stark’s theory on the religiosity, it has resulted a conclusion that the religiosity of Muslim Baduy in Leuwidamar, Lebak Regency, Banten is seen as a dynamic process based on the findings: 1) the conversion of Baduy people to Islam is due to political, theological, psychological, and sociological factors. 2) In one hand, Muslim Baduy leaves some tradition of Baduy particularly the rituals of Sunda Wiwitan and practices their obligation as a Muslim. On the other hand, Muslim Baduy still practices some Baduy tradition which is in line with Islamic shari’a.

Abstract

Recently, there are more and more zakat management institutions offering progressive programs. One of them is micro-economic development that encourages the community's economic sector. However, there are still many Muslims who do not know about that. This study aims to capture the public's perception of the distribution of zakat. It focused on micro-economic empowerment programs. This study uses a descriptive quantitative approach through a survey method with a sample of 1129 respondents. Indonesian people already understand the obligations of Muslims. But, this awareness is still lacking. The openness and transparency of each distribution and management of zakat funds will greatly determine public perceptions and influence the subsequent programs. Zakat institutions must be professional and have a positive impact on mustahiq. They have to give assistance and guidance to them in managing trading businesses as micro-economic empowerment.

Abstract

This paper aims to fill the gap in the study of tarekat (Sufi orders) and politics in Indonesia. It specifically wants to reveal the determination of the tarekat network and movement within Nahdlatul Ulama (NU) and their influence on the socio-political dynamics of this organization. The hypothesis that underlies this paper is that tarekat not only has religious potential, but also holds social, political, economic, and cultural potential. Socio-religiously, tarekat becomes a medium for instilling and transmitting religious values; it becomes a transmitter for ethical and spiritual values in society. Meanwhile, institutionally, tarekat is also a vehicle for articulating social interests and power. In this sense, the tarekat figures are not only active in religious activities but also able to form and be involved in the political arena. They created undercurrents to promote democratization and even collaborated with power holders to control political agendas and respond to socio-religious issues. The 2019 electoral political contestation shows that NU has succeeded in becoming the channel for democratic forces when competing with the forces of Islamism. Next, this study also indicates that the tarekat networks, as a force that can gather spiritual and political support, make NU a socio-religious organization that helps determine politics in Indonesia. Using Bourdieu's theoretical framework of social capital, this paper shows that the tarekat movement, as a religious institution in dialectic with social and political situations, will be primarily determined by habitus, capital, and arena. In general, these findings imply that the conception of tarekat often seen as apolitical mysticism needs to be reviewed and reconceptualized since, in fact, it is socio-politically relevant.

Abstract

The Neighborhood/Syuran tradition is not a mere socio-cultural phenomenon, but there is a deep philosophical meaning behind this annual event. The Banyumudal Panjer Kebumen Environmental Tradition places culture and local wisdom as the locus of faith in communicating with God. So that the actualization of culture is created that not only reflects syncretism and aculturalism but is also full of sacredness and nuances of Islam and faith. The encounter between Islamic values and local culture is evidence of a reception between religion and culture. This study aims to determine the process and results of the interaction between the teachings in the Qur'an and the culture of the Banyumudal Panjer Kebumen Society. This study uses a field research method, using Malinowski's theory of functionalism. Through this theory, researchers can uncover and examine more deeply the meaning and function of Syuran rituals. The results of this study show that 1) there are four forms of reception of the Qur'an in the environment/Syuran culture: symbolic receptions, historical receptions, aesthetic receptions and exegesis receptions. 2) Environment/Syuran is a socio-religious phenomenon that combines three important elements, namely religion, culture and economy. The integration of these three elements is represented by three important symbols of civilization for the people of Banyumudal, namely the triangle formed between the Environment/Syuran as a culture, the Banyumudal Mosque as a religious center and slaughtering chickens as part of the community's economy.

Data were analyzed and managed using Nvivo plus 12; then, conclusions were drawn. The aim of this study is achieved by finding that there are still many ethical violations in online business practices from a religious perspective. The findings also reveal that Islamic values are rarely used in business implementation because some violations occur not based on the intention of worship and are not based on Islamic principles such as At-Tauhid, Al-Amanah, As-Sidq, Al-Adalah, At-Ta'awun, Al-Maslahah, At-Taradi, and Al-Akhlaq Al-Karimah. This also proves that online business practices are still oriented to worldly aspects. The implication of the results of this study explains that doing business activities from an Islamic perspective contains principles that comprehensively govern ethics. So that the purpose of doing business is not solely for the interests of worldly welfare but the welfare of the ukhrawi in the pleasure of Allah SWT, and the benchmarks are al-Qur'an and al-Hadith

Abstract

This study aims to transform critical land governance based on Islamic spiritual values contained in the community's economic importance and environmental conservation values. This study used the Participatory Action Research (PAR) method, which was taken through 2 stages, each consisting of 4 procedures. The research involved the community in Dawuhan Village, Sirampog District, Brebes Regency, who worked together to solve problems regarding critical land. The research results show that the management of fundamental land transformation is carried out through coffee planting. This transformation is based on environmental conservation values and community economic values. The minimization of critical land status in Dawuhan village shows the importance of environmental conservation. In contrast, the economic value of the people in Dawuhan village has increased sharply after the transformation of management. The minimization of the status of critical land in Dawuhan Village is known from the increase in land planted with thorny trees (pine, coffee, and so on) from 20% to 30%. The increase in the economic value of the people in Dawuhan Village is shown by the increase in coffee yields from 1 ton to 5 tons. The growth around perennials and the economy was obtained after the implementation of the PAR conducted in this study.

Abstract

This research aims to illustrate the integration between revelation and the local culture of the Sengkang city community. This research uses qualitative research with historical and anthropological approaches. The tradition of Mappanre Temme', also known as Mappanre Lebbe, is a traditional event of Khataman al-Qur'an conducted by the Bugis community as a form of worship because one of the family members has been ready or has finished reading the Holy Qur'an. Mappanre Temme' implemented maccera, which means as a thank you to ustadz (teacher) and hand over foodstuffs, and as a thank you to parents by slaughtering cows, goats, or chickens, depending on the level of community performance. Maccera can be livestock or foodstuffs such as rice, coconut, and bananas. The phenomenon of Mappanre Temme' is always hereditary by the people of Sengkang city, Wajo Regency, South Sulawesi is not only a culture that appears just like that. But this tradition arises because it is inspired by a hadith, as a form of practice from the companions of the Prophet, referred to as the mauquf hadith, which later developed into a tradition inherent in society.

Abstract

This article is intended to analyze the role and position of religion in the Rencong Telang customary conflict in Kerinci Regency, Jambi, which has given rise to the dualism of customary institutions. There are two points of concern that will be highlighted in this article. First, religion and customs are facing an acculturation crisis. Second, efforts to commodify religion in winning the contestation. This study uses qualitative data obtained through interviews, observations, and document studies and then analyzed descriptively. The results showed that the Rencong Telang customary conflict took place when the role and position of religion weakened in the social order so that religion was unable to build reconciliation when adat was in conflict. This condition threatens the acculturation of religion and customs of Rencong Telang, which has been created for a long time and is reflected in the philosophy of “adat bersendi syara’, syara’ bersendi kitabullah.” Furthermore, religion in a vacuum is also vulnerable to being used as a commodity to seize influence and win conflicts by one or both parties.
