Abstract

This study is intended to explain the actualization of religious moderation in Islamic fatwas in mainstream media in Indonesia. This study uses a qualitative-descriptive approach, in the form of media text studies combined with field studies. The media that is used as the object of study is Republika online which is considered to be able to represent mainstream media that has an interest in Islamic issues. Data analysis uses the critical discourse analysis method developed by Teun A van Dijk. This study conveys that in general the contents of fatwas in Republika have actualized and supported the agenda of religious moderation in Indonesia, but when measured by each indicator, the contents of religious moderation tend to only appear in formal in national commitment aspect, tend to avoid diversity of insight because of the urge to always be moderate, and only convey the physical and manifest violence by disregarding that of non-physical and latent. Meanwhile, accommodative indicators of local culture tend to be overlooked in almost all fatwa content, even though many issues potentially can be linked to this. This study is limited to fatwas that contain state issues, while the content of religious moderation can be seen in a wider spectrum of issues. Therefore, this deficiency can be continued by future researchers. However, this study can contribute to providing a qualitative picture of the extent to which the mass media, especially the mainstream media, play a role in the agenda of religious moderation in Indonesia.

This research will re-question the argument that is da'wa in social media considered superficial and pragmatic due to being conducted by youth Muslims with no religious credential background. Then, what if there is a social media preacher who has a religious education credential that preaches on the same platform? Could other factors, such as technical limitations on specific social media platforms, make da'wa content more general, supraficial and pragmatic? What if a platform that has limited algorithms is used as a first step to attract attention, then is given a more complete understanding by providing the full version of the content on a larger platform like YouTube? This research will focus on how Habib Husein Ja'far, a Hadhrami preacher, descendants of the prophet and has good religious educational background who preaches the da'wa over all social media platforms optimizes his da'wa on social media by utilizing logic, algorithms, and the technical limitations of each platform.

Abstract

In the last few years, many people have used cyber religion to identify new forms of religious communities and rituals. It acts as the source of religious engagement that is different, new, creative, and alienated from ‘conventional’ religions. This article aims to reveal how Mubadalah.id as an Instagram account plays a role to provide beautification of da’wa (Islamic preaching conveyed by Islamic scholars) in countering unjust interpretations of Islamic texts toward women. In particular, it is a representation of Islamic media and women’s rights that strengthens the capacity and authority of women ulama. They are carrying on perspectives that affirm the values of reciprocity, equality, cooperation, and justice in marital, familial, and social relations. Mubadalah.id is a social media campaign affiliated to the Fahmina Foundation, a notable Muslim organisation that promotes gender equality in Indonesia. Using a virtual ethnography method, this article aims to understand the strategy used by this account to counter-gender inequality narratives. This article argues that Instagram can be optimized to build a moderate gender construction in countering the mainstreaming patriarchy ideas on social media by supplying alternative interpretations served in beautified contents. In addition, this account shows the representation of women ulama in Indonesian public spaces to negotiate their identity in a Muslim-majority country.

Abstract

This paper attempts to describe the Islamic discourse echoed by the National Sharia Council (DSN) as an ideal solution in products/programs that are suitable in Islamic law, but in practice it becomes a sheath of domination that is accepted by the Muslim community as taken for granted. The practice of sharia discourse that create new capitalism occur in Banks Syariah, BPJS Syariah, and Cooperatives Syariah. The power relations of the National Sharia Council which claime sharia discourse as an ideal concept, behind which there are capitalist interests that are networked with non-sharia (conventional) products / programs. Through the power of the DSN as a knowledgeable authority, the Muslim community as a target began to hegemony over the sharia discourse, because the cult of the DSN represented the intellectual authority in Islamic law. Meanwhile, consumptive practices in the sharia discourse can be seen in the concept of sharia tourism, sharia hotels, and syar'i hijab. The syar'i hijab, which is the mainstay of capitalism in fashion products targeting the Muslim community, forms excessive consumerism in decoration (tabarruj) rather than the simplicity idealized in Islamic law (zuhud / asceticism). Ideal sharia practices and in accordance with Islamic law in economic terms can be echoed again through the maximalize management of Baitul Mal as an accommodating forum for Zakat Mal, Infaq, waqf and others.

Abstract

This research discusses the relation between Islam and the State among Muslim scholars. Many discuss the relation between Islam and the State from Sharia and historical viewpoints. However, this study examines the relation from education standpoint. The literature research looks at academic publications from prominent Muslim scholars around the world. This research asserts that the study on relation between Islam dan the State can be divided into three main categories: integrative, substantive and secular. In relation to education, those studies reveal that educational institutions attempt to align their teaching ideology with the ideology of its founder or stakeholders. Despite their significant differences, all Muslim scholars derive their thought and discussion from thelogical foundation of Al-Qur’an and Hadith. They also seem to show a common ground in defining Islamic Education. Nevertheless, Islamic education institutions present various views on teaching the ideology in relation between Islam and the State, from moderate teaching to radical teaching or understanding.

Abstract

This paper aims to fill the gap in the study of tarekat (Sufi orders) and politics in Indonesia. It specifically wants to reveal the determination of the tarekat network and movement within Nahdlatul Ulama (NU) and their influence on the socio-political dynamics of this organization. The hypothesis that underlies this paper is that tarekat not only has religious potential, but also holds social, political, economic, and cultural potential. Socio-religiously, tarekat becomes a medium for instilling and transmitting religious values; it becomes a transmitter for ethical and spiritual values in society. Meanwhile, institutionally, tarekat is also a vehicle for articulating social interests and power. In this sense, the tarekat figures are not only active in religious activities but also able to form and be involved in the political arena. They created undercurrents to promote democratization and even collaborated with power holders to control political agendas and respond to socio-religious issues. The 2019 electoral political contestation shows that NU has succeeded in becoming the channel for democratic forces when competing with the forces of Islamism. Next, this study also indicates that the tarekat networks, as a force that can gather spiritual and political support, make NU a socioreligious organization that helps determine politics in Indonesia. Using Bourdieu's theoretical framework of social capital, this paper shows that the tarekat movement, as a religious institution in dialectic with social and political situations, will be primarily determined by habitus, capital, and arena. In general, these findings imply that the conception of tarekat often seen as apolitical mysticism needs to be reviewed and reconceptualized since, in fact, it is socio-politically relevant.
