Abstract

The Neighborhood/Syuran tradition is not a mere socio-cultural phenomenon, but there is a deep philosophical meaning behind this annual event. The Banyumudal Panjer Kebumen Environmental Tradition places culture and local wisdom as the locus of faith in communicating with God. So that the actualization of culture is created that not only reflects syncretism and aculturalism but is also full of sacredness and nuances of Islam and faith. The encounter between Islamic values and local culture is evidence of a reception between religion and culture. This study aims to determine the process and results of the interaction between the teachings in the Qur'an and the culture of the Banyumudal Panjer Kebumen Society. This study uses a field research method, using Malinowski's theory of functionalism. Through this theory, researchers can uncover and examine more deeply the meaning and function of Syuran rituals. The results of this study show that 1) there are four forms of reception of the Qur'an in the environment/Syuran culture: symbolic receptions, historical receptions, aesthetic receptions and exegesis receptions. 2) Environment/Syuran is a socio-religious phenomenon that combines three important elements, namely religion, culture and economy. The integration of these three elements is represented by three important symbols of civilization for the people of Banyumudal, namely the triangle formed between the Environment/Syuran as a culture, the Banyumudal Mosque as a religious center and slaughtering chickens as part of the community's economy.

Abstract

This study examines the complex relationship between children’s involvement in terrorist activities and the violation of their fundamental human rights, with particular focus on their freedom of religion or belief. The phenomenon of child involvement in terrorism in Indonesia has developed into a disturbing trend, with families directly participating in terrorist attacks, as exemplified by the 2018 Surabaya bombings. Indonesia, home of the world’s largest Muslim population, continues to confront the issue of radicalization. However, the increasing participation of children in terrorism calls for urgent attention to human rights concerns. This research employs a qualitative methodology, combining a literature review and interviews with officers at BRSAMPK Handayani Jakarta, to investigate the extent of children’s victimization in the context of terrorism. The findings reveal that children involved in terrorist activities should be viewed as victims rather than perpetrators, as their participation is driven by coercive ideological indoctrination which systematically violates their fundamental rights. The study emphasizes that such indoctrination deprives children of their autonomy, subjecting them to psychological manipulation and religious misinterpretation that strips them of their freedom of belief. Therefore, this paper recommends a strengthened policy framework to protect children from radicalization and ensure their rehabilitation through comprehensive deradicalization programs. The findings have significant implications for policymakers, human rights advocates, and scholars in counterterrorism and child protection.

Abstract

This study examines the religious transformation of the Muslim Baduy community in Leuwidamar, Lebak-Banten, with a focus on the conversion process, post-conversion religious practices, and the impact on social and cultural identity. The research aims to analyze the driving factors behind the conversion to Islam, the adaptation of religious behaviors following conversion, and the extent to which religious conversion influences socio-cultural changes among the Muslim Baduy. Employing a descriptive-analytic approach, this study utilizes an ethnographic method, incorporating participant observation, in-depth interviews, and document analysis. The findings reveal that the conversion of the Baduy people to Islam is driven by political, theological, psychological, and sociological factors. Politically, government policies supporting the welfare of isolated communities play a significant role. Theologically, Islam’s structured religious framework contrasts with the prohibitive and rigid customs of Sunda Wiwitan. Psychologically, Islam is perceived as a more accommodating and adaptable faith. Sociologically, interactions with the Muslim majority and economic constraints further influence conversion. Post-conversion, the Muslim Baduy continue cultural practices aligned with Islamic teachings while abandoning specific Sunda Wiwitan rituals. This study contributes to the discourse on religious transformation, identity negotiation, and the dynamics of indigenous belief systems in the context of Islamic integration.

Abstract

The religious tolerance of the Dayak people towards converts in their families in Central Kalimantan shows that there are several problems which must be faced. Because apart from being a minority (Dayak converts), the Dayak people still uphold the culture that has been passed down from generation to generation. This study is conducted using a field study with purposive sampling on converts who are identified based on the specified classification. Data are reviewed through literature studies and strengthened by in-depth interviews, then analyzed using the Nvivo 12 application. This study reveals that in practice, the Dayak people uphold religious principles while maintaining tolerance as a habitus which comes from historical products by producing collective individual practices or behavior. Furthermore, religious practices, tolerance, and habitus play an important role in the daily life of the Dayak community towards converts. This is because they respect each other's beliefs, customs, and culture through a system of mutual assistance between one another in social interactions and everyday life. An open attitude and mind are also the reason for harmony in respecting differences and maintaining goodness among others, but not forgetting religion and culture.

Abstract

persist regarding the depth and credibility of social media-based da’wa, often perceived as superficial and lacking religious authority. This study investigates the case of Habib Husein Ja’far Al-Hadar, a traditionally trained Hadhrami preacher, who has emerged as a prominent digital da’i through his strategic and effective use of Instagram, TikTok, Twitter, and YouTube. The research aims to explore how algorithmic logic, media constraints, and digital culture shape and potentially enhance the reach and substance of da’wa in contemporary Indonesia. Anchored in digital ethnography and qualitative content analysis, the study draws upon online observations and platform analytics to examine how Habib Ja’far optimizes message delivery across social media, navigating technical limitations to convey inclusive, youth-oriented Islamic messages. Findings reveal that beyond religious qualifications, digital fluency—understanding algorithms, audience behavior, and platform affordances—is essential to successful digital da’wa. Habib Ja’far’s approach demonstrates how algorithmic literacy and creative communication can challenge the dichotomy between traditional and modern religious authority. This research contributes to broader discussions on mediatized religion, digital religious authority, and the transformation of Islamic communication in the algorithmic age.

Abstract

In the context of Indonesia’s digital public sphere, Islamic fatwas disseminated through mainstream media play a pivotal role in shaping religious narratives. This study investigates the actualization of religious moderation within Islamic fatwas published by Republika Online, a prominent media outlet known for its Islamic orientation. The research aims to analyze how the values of religious moderation—as defined by Indonesia’s Ministry of Religious Affairs—are reflected in fatwa content, particularly in the areas of national commitment, tolerance, anti-discrimination, and cultural accommodation. This study employs a qualitative-descriptive design, combining media text analysis with field research and applies Teun A. van Dijk’s Critical Discourse Analysis (CDA)framework to unpack ideological structures behind fatwa discourse. The findings reveal that Republika’s fatwas tend to support religious moderation, especially in relation to national and anti-violence commitments. However, indicators such as cultural inclusivity and the recognition of latent forms of discrimination are frequently underrepresented. Furthermore, references to diverse Islamic legal traditions and local wisdom remain limited. This study contributes to understanding the dynamics of Islamic discourse in media and highlights the strategic role of fatwas in advancing religious moderation. It also offers critical insight for policymakers and media practitioners seeking to strengthen inclusive and context-sensitive religious communication.

Abstract

The rise of digital media has significantly transformed the landscape of religious authority and feminist activism in Indonesia. This research examines how Mubadalah.id, an Instagram-based digital Islamic platform, serves as a counter-narrative to patriarchal interpretations of Islamic texts by promoting inclusive and reciprocal perspectives rooted in Islamic teachings. The research aims to explore how feminist reinterpretations of religious authority are articulated, mediated, and contested in online spaces, particularly through visual and narrative strategies. Addressing a critical gap in the literature on Islamic digital feminism, this research situates the intersection of religion, gender, and media within the Indonesian context, where women ulama are both emerging and negotiating their presence. Using a qualitative virtual ethnographic approach, data were collected through in-depth interviews with the editorial team of Mubadalah.id and content analysis of selected high-engagement Instagram posts. The findings reveal that Mubadalah.id employs visual aesthetics, storytelling, and moderate Islamic jurisprudence to challenge misogynistic narratives, empower women's roles in public discourse, and foster a more gender-equitable understanding of Islam. This research concludes that Islamic digital feminism on Instagram not only challenges dominant narratives but also signifies a broader reconfiguration of Islamic authority and gender dynamics in contemporary Indonesian society.
