Abstract

Smoking remains a serious health problem in rural communities. High cigarette consumption increases the risk of non-communicable diseases, respiratory disorders, and places a financial burden on families. This community service activity aims to increase community knowledge and awareness of the dangers of smoking through the "Healthy Village Movement Without Smoking" program. Methods used include health education, group discussions, visual demonstrations, the formation of anti-smoking cadres, and the declaration of smoke-free areas within the village. The results of this activity indicate increased community knowledge, changes in attitudes toward the dangers of smoking, and a shared commitment to reducing smoking. This program is expected to develop into an independent and sustainable healthy village movement.

Abstract

Non-communicable diseases (NCDs) such as hypertension, diabetes mellitus, and heart disease continue to increase annually, including among productive-age individuals at the village level. As the spearhead of primary health care, Posyandu (Integrated Health Post) cadres play a crucial role in early NCD detection, yet their skills and knowledge remain limited. This Community Service Program (PKM) activity aims to improve the capacity of Posyandu cadres through training on risk factor identification, blood pressure measurement techniques, simple blood sugar tests, and recording and reporting NCD cases. Implementation methods included education, demonstrations, hands-on practice, and evaluation. The results of the activity showed a significant increase in cadres' knowledge and skills, as evidenced by a 48% increase in pre-test scores to 88% in the post-test. Cadres were also able to correctly measure blood pressure and blood sugar after the training. With this training, Posyandu cadres are expected to be able to conduct early NCD detection independently, regularly, and sustainably within Posyandu activities.

Abstract

Iron deficiency anemia among high school adolescents in the Papua region has become a critical public health issue, with a national prevalence of 15.5%. This condition is driven by low nutrition literacy, unbalanced dietary patterns, and its negative impact on academic performance and immunity. This community service program aims to improve nutrition literacy for anemia prevention through interactive education at SMA Papua Kasih as the partner institution, targeting 30 adolescent students. A mixed-methods approach was applied, including a pretest–posttest questionnaire (20 items, Cronbach’s Alpha >0.7), participatory observation, in-depth interviews, and secondary data analysis using SPSS Paired t-test and NVivo. The results showed a significant increase in nutrition literacy, with the proportion of students in the low–moderate category decreasing to 55.3% and those with good knowledge rising to 85.7%, as indicated by a Paired t-test result of p<0.001. Additionally, active student participation reached 93%, and 87% of participants reported that the interactive learning approach helped them better understand anemia prevention and apply healthier dietary habits in their daily lives. This program demonstrates that interactive nutrition education can effectively enhance adolescents’ nutrition literacy and serves as a strategic effort to reduce the risk of iron deficiency anemia in high school populations, particularly in the Papua region.

Abstract

Children's dental health is a crucial foundation for their future growth, development, and quality of life. The high caries rate among elementary school children in Indonesia indicates a low level of awareness about maintaining dental hygiene from an early age. This Community Service (PKM) activity aims to improve students' understanding of dental and oral health through education, toothbrushing demonstrations, educational games, and direct dental health examinations. The activity was conducted with 20 students in grades I–VI at an elementary school. Results showed a 20% increase in student knowledge and the identification of various dental problems such as caries, plaque, and mild gingivitis. This program has had a positive impact on increasing oral health awareness in children and serves as a foundation for ongoing development.

Abstract

Health promotion regarding the importance of physical activity for students' physical fitness at Universitas Tribhuwana Tunggadewi Malang plays a crucial role in fostering healthy lifestyle habits among students. Regular physical activity provides numerous benefits, including improving physical fitness, strengthening muscles and bones, and enhancing overall body endurance. In addition, exercise is also important for maintaining students’ mental health by helping to reduce stress, anxiety, and depression, which are commonly experienced during the academic period. Health promotion programs focused on physical activity can encourage students to develop sustainable healthy lifestyle habits. Through activities such as group exercise, fitness sessions, or campus-based sports classes, students are motivated to be more physically active. These activities not only improve physical fitness but also strengthen the sense of community among students. Support from the university enables active lifestyle habits to become an integral part of students’ daily lives, thereby contributing positively to both their physical and mental well-being. The results of this community service activity showed that all participating students attended the educational sessions from start to finish, demonstrating their enthusiasm and awareness of the importance of physical activity for maintaining health.

Abstract

Preoperative fasting is an important procedure in preparing patients before surgical procedures involving anesthesia. Patient noncompliance with fasting rules can increase the risk of aspiration, respiratory disorders, and other anesthesia complications. However, many patients still do not understand the purpose and rules of preoperative fasting correctly. This community service activity aimed to increase patient knowledge and compliance regarding preoperative fasting and its impact on anesthesia safety. The methods used included health education through counseling, leaflets, interactive discussions, and pre-test and post-test evaluations. The results of the activity showed a significant increase in patient knowledge from 45% to 85% after education. In addition, most patients demonstrated a better understanding of the timing and types of food that can be consumed before surgery. This education is expected to improve patient safety and reduce the risk of anesthesia complications.

Abstract

The aging process causes a decline in physiological, psychological, and social functions that affect the physical health and quality of life of older adults. Regular physical activity, such as through exercise for older adults, has been proven to increase muscle strength, flexibility, balance, and prevent degenerative diseases. This Community Service activity aims to improve the physical health and quality of life of nursing home residents through exercise training for older adults. The methods included counseling, demonstrations, joint practice, and pre-test and post-test evaluations. The results showed a significant increase in physical fitness, balance, flexibility, muscle strength, and the participation of the elderly in physical activities. Senior gymnastics training is recommended as a routine program to improve the health and quality of life of the elderly.

Abstract

The Basic Trauma Cardiac Life Support (BTCLS) training, which includes triage principles, is a strategic effort to enhance nurses’ preparedness in facing emergency situations. This article discusses the implementation of triage training in BTCLS as a means of developing nurses’ competencies in rapid assessment and priority decision-making for patient management using the START and ATS methods. Through a combination of theory, simulation, and practice, this training improves psychomotor skills, communication, and interprofessional coordination among healthcare providers in critical situations. As a result, nurses become more confident, responsive, and effective in delivering emergency care, which contributes to improved patient safety and the overall quality of healthcare services. This article emphasizes the importance of structured training as a foundation for strengthening triage systems and emergency management in healthcare facilities.

Abstract

Pregnancy is a physiological process that requires the mother's physical and psychological readiness. Lack of physical activity during pregnancy can increase the risk of pregnancy-related complaints, labor complications, and maternal and fetal health problems. Prenatal exercise is a safe and beneficial form of physical activity that improves maternal fitness and supports fetal growth and development. This Community Service activity aims to increase the knowledge and skills of pregnant women regarding prenatal exercise as an effort to maintain maternal and fetal health. Implementation methods include counseling, demonstrations, practical training in prenatal exercise, and activity evaluation. The results of the activity indicate an increase in pregnant women's knowledge about the benefits of prenatal exercise, improved skills in performing correct exercise movements, and a decrease in physical complaints during pregnancy. This activity is expected to serve as a promotive and preventive effort to improve maternal and fetal health.
