Abstract

Critical thinking is one of the essential skills that children must possess to face the challenges of the 21st century. However, the 2018 Programme for International Student Assessment (PISA) result indicate that Indonesian children’s critical thinking skills remain low and rank below those of many other countries. One of the efforts that can be undertaken to improve this skill is the implementation of project-based learning. This literature review aims to examine and analyze the findings from recent empirical studies in the form of articles, journals and research documents regarding the impact and effectiveness of project-based learning in improving enhancing critical thinking skills among early childhood learners. The method used is qualitative descriptive, employing the Miles and Huberman model of data reduction, data presentation, and drawing conclusions. The articles reviewed are derived from various primary sources, including national journals published within the last five years and international journals published within the last eight years. All literature was carefully selected from various accredited, high-quality and reputable scientific databases. The review findings reveal that project-based learning is superior to conventional and other instructional models, as evidenced by improvements in children’s thinking patterns, creativity, conceptual and principled understanding, problem-solving, decision-making, and independence – all of which are integral components of critical thinking skills.

Abstract

This study investigates the sociocultural factors influencing the speaking proficiency of third-semester students at the English Education Department, Mulawarman University. Using a descriptive qualitative approach, twelve participants were purposively selected based on their speaking proficiency levels. Data were collected through semi-structured interviews, classroom observations, and document analysis. The findings identify five key sociocultural factors: gender, family background, socio-economic status, exposure to English outside the classroom, social interaction in language learning (interaction with peers, native speakers, and language intsructors). Students with early English exposure, supportive family environments, strong peer networks, and access to technology tend to demonstrate higher fluency and confidence. Despite receiving the same classroom instruction, differences in sociocultural experiences contribute to varied speaking outcomes. This study highlights the need for inclusive teaching strategies that consider students’ backgrounds and individual characteristics. The findings offer insights for educators to design more responsive and equitable language learning environments in EFL contexts.

Abstract

This study highlights the importance of improving writing skills among elementary school students, particularly considering the persistent challenges many students face in generating ideas and constructing coherent, logical narratives. The primary focus of this research is to examine the role of visual media as a bridge between visual forms and verbal expression in the context of writing instruction. Employing a qualitative descriptive method with an exploratory case study approach, the study involved two teachers and fifth-grade students from SKH 2 KTG and SKH 45 GMK in Central Kalimantan. Data were collected through direct observation, in-depth interviews, and analysis of students' written work. Findings indicate that visual media significantly supports students' cognitive processes, especially in developing ideas, organizing narrative structures sequentially, and reducing affective barriers that often hinder writing. Images were found to serve not only as a stimulus for creativity but also as a tool that connects students’ lived experiences with the narratives they produce. For further development, future research is recommended to explore the cognitive processes involved in transforming visual stimuli into verbal expression and to examine the effectiveness of more dynamic visual media—such as videos or animations—in enhancing students' writing skills. Such strategies are believed to broaden the horizon of understanding regarding adaptive, inclusive, and contextually relevant multimodal learning in contemporary education.

Abstract

This study explores the integration of digital music education with disaster mitigation efforts in senior high schools in Bukittinggi, Indonesia, as a strategy to foster disaster awareness and preparedness among students. Amid the increasing frequency of natural disasters in the region, there is a growing need for educational innovations that connect creative expression with practical life skills. The research aims to investigate how music-based learning—enhanced by digital technology—can be utilized as a medium for disaster education. Using a qualitative approach supported by surveys, interviews, classroom observations, and analysis of student projects, this study reveals that students show a strong interest in incorporating disaster themes into their digital music compositions. The use of Digital Audio Workstations (DAWs) not only enhances student creativity but also allows them to express their understanding of disaster preparedness through culturally relevant music. Collaboration with local artists and disaster management institutions has further strengthened the contextual relevance of the learning process. However, limitations such as inadequate infrastructure, limited access to technology, and a lack of technical training remain significant challenges. The findings suggest that a curriculum integrating digital music education with disaster mitigation content has great potential to contribute to the formation of a resilient generation. To maximize its impact, the study recommends government support in improving digital infrastructure and teacher training programs.

Abstract

. Mathematics problem-solving ability is a fundamental skill in elementary education that is influenced by various psychological factors. This study aims to investigate the effects of self-confidence and adversity quotient on the problem-solving skills of fifth-grade students at SD Negeri Arjawinangun. Using a quantitative correlational design, the study involved a total sample of 100 students. Data were collected through validated and reliable questionnaires measuring self-confidence and adversity quotient, along with a mathematics problem-solving test. Prior to analysis, assumptions of normality, linearity, and multicollinearity were confirmed. Multiple linear regression analysis revealed that both self-confidence and adversity quotient had a significant positive effect on students’ problem-solving abilities, with regression coefficients of 0.45 and 0.37 respectively (p < 0.05). The regression model accounted for 62% of the variance in problem-solving ability. These findings highlight the crucial role of psychological resilience and confidence in enhancing mathematical problem-solving at the elementary level. However, given the correlational design, causal inferences cannot be definitively made. The results suggest that educators should focus on fostering students’ psychological strengths alongside cognitive skills to improve academic outcomes. Future research is recommended to employ experimental designs and incorporate additional variables to deepen understanding of the factors influencing mathematical problem-solving
