Abstract

This study aims to analyze the denotative and connotative meanings found in the lyrics of the song “Atemlos durch die Nacht” by Helene Fischer. A song is an effective medium for conveying messages and emotions through a combination of melody and lyrics. The lyrics of “Atemlos durch die Nacht” were chosen because of their deep emotional expression and the song’s historical significance as one of Germany’s most successful songs. The research employs a qualitative descriptive method focusing on semantic analysis to identify the literal (denotative) and implied (connotative) meanings in each line of the song’s lyrics. Data were collected through document analysis, and each lyric was interpreted according to its contextual meaning. The findings show that each lyric of the song contains both denotative and connotative meanings that express feelings of freedom, love, and enthusiasm. The denotative meanings present the literal interpretations of the words, while the connotative meanings reveal emotional and symbolic associations related to human experiences of joy, affection, and liberation. In conclusion, the study highlights that linguistic elements in song lyrics can serve as powerful tools for expressing human emotions and cultural values through layers of meaning.

Abstract

Listening skills are basic German language skills that are important. This study aims to describe whether there is an effect of using Spotify media on listening skills for German text at level A1.1. This study uses the Quasi Experimental research method, where researchers only use one group as the object of research by using Spotify as the media applied to the object of research, with the research design used is Pre-Test & Post-Test. The instrument used in this study is the German listening skills test (hören) Level A1.1 from Goethe (Pre-test and Post-test). The results showed that there was a significant increase in the average score of the test results before and after treatmen. t, where the pretest average for all respondents was 55.29 while the posttest average was 77,94. The results of further calculations showed that the calculated t value of 1,960 is greater than the t table value of 1.746, thus the null hypothesis is rejected. This means that there is an effect of using Spotify media on listening skills for German text at level A1.1. in improving listening skills for German text at level A1.1 for students of the Pattimura University German Language Education Study Program. This indicates that the use of Spotify as a digital media can function well in language learning, both receptive and also productive.

Abstract

This study aims to examine the language use patterns of teachers in teaching German, focusing on the phenomena of code-mixing and code-switching. In the context of foreign language learning in Indonesia, the use of more than one language is a common strategy employed by teachers to bridge students’ understanding of the material. This research employs a descriptive qualitative approach, with data collected through observation, interviews, field notes, and literature review. The findings reveal that during the opening and closing phases of the lesson, teachers tend to use code-switching from German to Indonesian to provide clearer explanations or instructions. Meanwhile, during the core teaching phase, teachers frequently apply code-mixing by inserting German or English vocabulary or phrases into Indonesian sentences. These results align with the theory of translanguaging (García & Wei, 2014), which emphasizes the flexible use of multiple languages to enhance student comprehension. Therefore, the use of code-mixing and code-switching in German language instruction can be considered an effective pedagogical strategy when used intentionally and proportionally.
