Abstract

One of the main efforts in preventing stunting is through exclusive breastfeeding. To support this, health education and breastfeeding technique training are carried out to the community in the work area of the Astambul Health Center. The target of this activity is breastfeeding mothers with children aged 0–24 months. The activity partner, namely the Astambul Health Center, faces a high prevalence of stunting, so a strategy is needed to accelerate stunting reduction through health education on family empowerment, the Healthy Living Community Movement (Germas), and the optimization of the First 1000 Days of Life (HPK), especially related to exclusive breastfeeding and correct breastfeeding techniques. This activity was attended by 20 breastfeeding mothers. As part of the training, participants practiced proper breastfeeding techniques with the assistance of facilitators. The evaluation was carried out in two stages: (1) immediately after counseling to assess participants' understanding of exclusive breastfeeding and correct breastfeeding techniques; and (2) one month after the activity to evaluate the success of the application of the technique in daily breastfeeding practice. The results of the evaluation showed an increase in the knowledge and skills of the participants, which is expected to support efforts to reduce the stunting rate in the region through more optimal breastfeeding practices during the 1000 HPK period.

Abstract

Based on International Diabetes Federation (IDF) data, an estimated 463 million people aged 20–79 worldwide were living with diabetes in 2019, with projections rising to 578 million by 2030 and 700 million by 2045. Indonesia ranks seventh among the ten countries with the highest number of diabetes cases, totaling 10.7 million people. Banjarbaru City is one of the regions in South Kalimantan with the highest prevalence of type 2 diabetes mellitus (DM). Inadequate management of DM can result in both acute and chronic complications, including cardiovascular disorders, peripheral neuropathy, and diabetic foot. One non-pharmacological approach to reducing blood glucose levels is through physical activity, such as the Diabetes Foot Exercise (Senam Kaki Diabetes) and Diabetes Exercise (Senam Diabetes), which aim to improve circulation, strengthen muscles, and enhance glucose metabolism. This community service project aimed to improve knowledge, skills, and self-reliance among Prolanis patients with type 2 DM in applying combined foot and diabetes exercises as an alternative method to lower blood glucose levels and prevent complications. A cross-sectional analytic observational method was applied, with the population comprising 20 Prolanis patients selected using total sampling. Initial blood glucose tests (pretest) showed that 16 participants had hyperglycemia, while 4 were within normal limits. The intervention included education on DM complications and prevention, followed by the practice of combined foot and diabetes exercises. Post-intervention (posttest) results indicated a decrease in blood glucose levels in all participants, although 50% remained in the hyperglycemia category. The targeted goal was achieved, with improvements in both blood glucose control and patient knowledge. It is recommended that healthcare workers and community health cadres continue promoting and supervising the regular practice of these exercises to maintain quality of life and reduce the risk of complications in type 2 DM patients.

Abstract

Based on the 2018 Basic Health Research (Riskesdas), 61.9% of Indonesians aged 55–64 years and 54.2% aged over 65 years experienced dental and oral health problems, while in South Kalimantan the prevalence reached 59%. Among children aged 10–14 years, only 2.1% brushed their teeth properly, and overall only 8.1% of Indonesians practiced correct and timely toothbrushing habits. Poor oral hygiene is strongly influenced by behavioral factors, particularly the lack of awareness regarding the importance of maintaining dental and oral health. This community service project was conducted at SDN Tambak Raya Martapura, targeting 47 elementary school students from grades I to VI, with the aim of improving oral hygiene through promotive and preventive approaches. A total sampling technique was applied, and interventions included mass toothbrushing, health education, and the application of disclosing solution to detect dental plaque as an indicator of oral hygiene. Initial examinations showed that the majority of students had moderate levels of oral hygiene. After the intervention, follow-up examinations demonstrated significant improvements, with 32 students (76%) achieving good oral hygiene, while 10 students (24%) remained in the moderate category. No students were found in the poor category. The targeted outcomes were successfully achieved, indicating that the combination of mass toothbrushing and disclosing solution application was effective in promoting oral health. It is recommended that schools, parents, and health workers continue to integrate these activities regularly to improve children’s oral hygiene and prevent future dental health problems.

Abstract

Perineal tears are among the most common complications experienced by postpartum mothers. A preliminary survey in Awang Bangkal Barat Village revealed that approximately 45% of postpartum mothers suffered perineal tears. Management has primarily focused on pharmacological therapy and general education, with limited structured non-pharmacological interventions. This PKM aimed to introduce and implement Otaria exercise as essential midwifery care to accelerate perineal wound healing, improve maternal knowledge and skills, and enhance family involvement. Conducted over four months (April–July 2025), the program involved preparation, socialization, facilitator training (midwives/cadres), group exercise, home visits, and monitoring. Participants were 10 postpartum mothers selected based on inclusion criteria. Evaluation was carried out using pre-test, post-test, and skill observations. Maternal knowledge increased from 42% to 78%, while skills improved from 50% to 70%. Average attendance reached 80%, with most mothers practicing routinely at home. Perineal pain complaints decreased from 75% to 30%. Outputs included a leaflet, video tutorial, scientific publication, and documentation. Otaria exercise is effective as a non-pharmacological intervention to accelerate perineal wound healing, enhance knowledge, skills, and adherence, and strengthen family support. This program is recommended for integration into community-based midwifery services.

Abstract

Dental and oral health care for the elderly is an important aspect in improving their quality of life. According to the 2018 Riskesdas report, the largest proportion of dental problems in Indonesia is tooth decay/cavities/pain (45.3%). Meanwhile, the prevalence of dental caries in Indonesia is 88.8% with the prevalence of root caries at 56.6% (Riskesdas, 2018). The goal of community service is to carry out : Community Empowerment to Improve the Quality of Life of the Elderly at the Social Welfare Home for the Elderly “Budi Sejahtera II” Through Dental and Oral Health Care in Sungai Paring Village, Martapura. The total number of residents is 70 elderly people located at the Social Welfare Home for the Elderly “Budi Sejahtera II” Martapura, Banjar Regency, South Kalimantan Province. In this community service, the respondents are 30 elderly individuals (25 elderly and 5 staff members from the home). The results obtained show that there are 6 respondents (24.0%) with ≥ 10 teeth, 11 respondents (44.0%) with 6-10 teeth, and 8 respondents (32.0%) with ≤ 6 teeth. Meanwhile, there are 16 respondents (64.0%) without caries and 9 respondents (36.0%) with no caries or who have lost their teeth (edentulous). It is recommended to have dental care by getting dental fillings either at the nearest community health centre or hospital. Providing education and examining the dental and oral hygiene of the elderly through integrated health services and mobile health centres can be an effort for early detection and prevention of dental and oral health problems. This can help reduce the incidence of dental pain and tooth loss among the elderly. Keywords : Community Empowerment - Dental Caries – Elderly

Abstract

Back pain is a common discomfort experienced by approximately 90% of pregnant women due to progressive postural changes caused by uterine enlargement. This condition not only decreases sleep quality but also negatively affects maternal and fetal health, including weakened immunity, increased stress, and higher risks of low birth weight. One effective approach to alleviate back pain during pregnancy is prenatal exercise, which enhances muscle and ligament elasticity, improves posture, and trains breathing as well as relaxation techniques. However, in Sungai Alang Village, all 15 community health cadres lacked knowledge and skills in prenatal exercise. This community service program aimed to improve cadres’ capacity through prenatal exercise training, enabling them to assist pregnant women independently. The methods included pre- and post-tests to assess cadres’ knowledge, practical training on safe exercise techniques, development of illustrated leaflets, and video tutorials for sustainable learning. Monitoring and evaluation were conducted to measure cadres’ progress in knowledge and practice. The results indicated increased understanding among cadres regarding prenatal exercise, improved ability to support pregnant women during maternal classes, and the availability of educational media such as leaflets and videos. Additional outcomes included publications in newspapers, video documentation uploaded to the Poltekkes Kemenkes Banjarmasin YouTube channel, and submission to a nationally accredited journal. In conclusion, empowering community health cadres is an effective strategy to assist pregnant women in managing back pain through prenatal exercise while strengthening community-based maternal health support systems.
