Abstract

Imperative speech acts play a vital role in various aspects of communication, both in daily interactions and in media such as films. These speech acts serve essential functions in regulating, controlling, and directing the actions of others. This study aims to identify and describe the functions of imperative speech acts in the film Today We’ll Talk About That Day by Angga Dwimas Sasongko and to determine their relevance to learning Indonesian in high schools. The theoretical framework used in this study includes Searle's and Kunjana Rahardi's theories. The data source for the research is the film Today We’ll Talk About That Day, which was released in July 2023. A qualitative method was employed, with data collection techniques including observation, documentation, and interviews. The data analysis process involved four stages: data collection, data reduction, data presentation, and verification or conclusion. The results of the study revealed 42 instances of imperative speech acts in the film Today We’ll Talk About That Day. These were categorized into five functions: (1) requests, (2) orders, (3) invitations, (4) granting permission, and (5) prohibitions. The data were further classified into four quality categories: (1) very good, (2) good, (3) sufficient, and (4) very lacking. The study also demonstrated the relevance of imperative speech acts in the film Today We’ll Talk About That Day for teaching Indonesian to Grade 10 students, particularly in the context of discussion text material at SMA Muhammadiyah 2 Palembang.

Abstract

This study aims to assess how the ELSA Speak app helps improve the English-speaking skills of eighth-grade students at an Indonesian Islamic Junior High School and measure how much their speaking skills improve after using the app. The participants in this research included one English teacher and 15 eighth-grade students. The research was conducted using a Classroom Action Research (CAR) methodology, combining both qualitative and quantitative approaches. Qualitative data were gathered through photographs and observation checklists, while quantitative data were derived by comparing students' pre-test and post-test results. In the first cycle of the study, the average pre-test score was 53.93, which increased to 62.47 in the post-test. In the second cycle, students' performance improved further, with the pre-test score rising to 61.67 and the post-test reaching 74.87. The statistical analysis revealed a significant improvement in students' speaking abilities, as indicated by the t-test results. The t-test value for the second cycle (7.665) was notably higher than that of the first cycle (5.502), demonstrating a significant impact on students' speaking skills. The overall improvement from the first to the second cycle was 46.66%. Based on these findings, the study concludes that the use of the ELSA Speak application has a substantial positive effect on the students’ English-speaking proficiency.

Abstract

This study aimed to investigate whether the combination of students’ self-esteem and students’ motivation significantly explains their English-speaking proficiency, both separately and simultaneously. For this purpose, 38 students were selected among the undergraduate students of the Islamic Study Faculty, University of Muhammadiyah Prof. Dr. Hamka, Indonesia. A quantitative analysis was applied. To measure the students’ self-esteem and motivation, modified questionnaires were used, while their English-speaking proficiency was evaluated by two raters. The result showed a significant influence of the combination of the two variables on the dependent variable; English speaking proficiency. It indicated from the calculation by using SPSS version 17.00 which showed that the value of F-observed 11.463 is more than F-critical (3.27). The multiple correlation jointly between X1 and X2 and Y (Ry12) by 0.629 is significant. Moreover, the R-squared value of 0.396 can be interpreted that self-esteem and motivation together account for 39.6% of the variation in students’ English-speaking proficiency.

Abstract

Writing is the process of generating ideas and expressing them through statements and paragraphs to communicate indirectly with others. It involves articulating thoughts using written language. Writing skills are a critical component of English language proficiency. These skills enable individuals to convey their thoughts meaningfully and interact effectively through written messages. During the pandemic, online learning created opportunities to integrate digital media into teaching, including writing classes. One such tool is the Padlet Wall, a virtual bulletin board that allows lecturers and students to post notes, links, videos, images, and document files. This research aims to explore students’ perspectives on the use of Padlet Wall in writing classes during online learning. The participants of this study were fifth-semester students, and data collection was conducted using a questionnaire. The research employed a survey method to gather insights into whether students appreciated or disliked using Padlet Wall for writing classes. The findings reveal students’ attitudes toward the use of this digital tool in their learning process.

Abstract

This research examines lexical density and readability in election-related editorials from five major international newspapers: The Guardian, The Washington Post, The Sydney Morning Herald, The Oberlin Review, and The Los Angeles Times. Lexical density, the ratio of content words to total words, indicates linguistic complexity, while readability scores reflect accessibility. The Guardian exhibits the highest lexical density (60.02%), followed by The Washington Post (58.14%), reflecting a preference for precise, complex language. In contrast, The Sydney Morning Herald has the lowest density (54.74%), suggesting greater accessibility. Readability assessments categorize most editorials as “difficult” or “fairly difficult,” with The Guardian, The Sydney Morning Herald, and The Oberlin Review requiring advanced reading skills due to intricate vocabulary and lengthy sentences. These findings reveal distinct editorial objectives. Newspapers like The Guardian cater to an analytical readership seeking in-depth analysis, while outlets such as The Sydney Morning Herald prioritize readability, potentially appealing to a broader audience. The study underscores the importance of linguistic choices in shaping audience engagement, influencing accessibility, and impacting readers’ perceptions of political content. Varying complexity levels suggest that editorial strategies align with the ideological and demographic goals of each publication.

Abstract

This study investigates the effectiveness of Project-Based Learning (PjBL) strategies in enhancing students' interest and active participation in Fiqh education at MI Al-Hidayah. Many students at MI face significant challenges in mastering Fiqh, resulting in low levels of engagement during lessons. Suboptimal academic performance in this subject is often attributed to the reliance on ineffective instructional methods. Consequently, the integration of PjBL emerges as a critical strategy for enriching learning experiences and promoting practical application within the educational framework of MI. Adopting a qualitative methodology through a case study design, the research collected data using in-depth interviews to gain comprehensive insights. Additionally, both participatory and non-participatory observations were employed to capture authentic behaviors within natural contexts. These methods were further supplemented by the triangulation of data from multiple relevant sources. The findings reveal that PjBL has a significant positive impact on the quality of Fiqh education at MI Al-Hidayah. This pedagogical approach not only increases student engagement and interaction but also enhances their understanding of fundamental concepts. Moreover, PjBL fosters the development of critical social skills, such as collaboration, an appreciation for peaceful coexistence, and a heightened sense of responsibility. These outcomes contribute to the holistic development of students, aligning with the broader educational objectives of MI
