Abstract

This research investigates the effectiveness of Kahoot, a game-based learning platform, in enhancing motivation for learning grammar among university students. Recognizing the challenges faced by non-native English speakers in mastering grammar, the study explores the potential of gamification as an innovative teaching approach. A survey method was employed to collect data from 10 English university students using both structured and unstructured questionnaires. The findings reveal that Kahoot significantly enhances student motivation, engagement, and enjoyment in learning grammar. Students report higher satisfaction and improved understanding of grammar concepts compared to traditional teaching methods. However, the study highlights challenges, such as increased anxiety due to the competitive atmosphere and technical issues like internet connectivity. These results suggest that while Kahoot is an effective tool for grammar instruction, careful implementation is required to address its limitations and optimize its effectiveness. This research offers valuable insights for educators and researchers seeking to harness technology to improve grammar learning outcomes

Abstract

This article examines the purpose, methods, and challenges of Islamic education in Indonesia. Its primary goal is to cultivate Muslim individuals with noble character, deep religious knowledge, and a commitment to societal progress. The education process should integrate general and religious knowledge to enhance students' capacities. The article identifies three dimensions of Islamic education: spiritual, cultural, and intellectual. Despite increased government attention since 1945-1950, Islamic education institutions often remain under-recognized in the national system. Legal recognition has emerged, but challenges persist, particularly regarding the quality of human resources, as graduates often lack creativity. The article emphasizes the need for modern management and innovative methodologies to meet students' evolving needs. It positions Islamic education as vital, especially in rural areas, and concludes that enhanced support from the government and society is essential to improve its quality and relevance

Abstract

This study examines the level of speaking anxiety, identifies contributing factors, and explores strategies to address speaking anxiety during oral presentations in speaking classes among fourth-semester students at UIN Raden Intan Lampung. A qualitative descriptive design was employed, involving 55 English Department students. Data were collected using questionnaires and semi-structured interviews. The Foreign Language Classroom Anxiety Scale (FLCAS), developed by Horwitz et al. (1986), was modified and used to assess Foreign Language Anxiety (FLA). This 33-item, 5-point Likert scale measures students' language anxiety. Results indicate that speaking anxiety is prevalent among the students, particularly during oral presentations, with an average FLCAS score of 36.218. Interviews with six students, representing both low and high anxiety levels, revealed several factors contributing to speaking anxiety. These include negative thinking, lack of preparation, bad experiences, low ability, low confidence, fear of making mistakes, and physical conditions. To mitigate anxiety, students suggested strategies such as thorough preparation, managing negative thoughts, increasing self-confidence, using relaxation techniques, and improving language skills. The findings emphasize the importance of addressing speaking anxiety in EFL classrooms. Educators can create a supportive environment, incorporate activities to build confidence, and teach anxiety management strategies. Institutions should consider workshops on public speaking and anxiety reduction. Additionally, integrating frequent oral practice and personalized feedback into teaching methods can enhance students' speaking performance and reduce anxiety effectively.

Abstract

The Batak Toba traditional wedding ceremony is a significant cultural practice that reflects the social identity and kinship structure of the Batak Toba community. This study aims to analyze the transformation of Batak Toba wedding rituals in the modern context, particularly in Medan City, where urbanization, modernization, and globalization strongly influence traditional practices. Using Alexander Duranti's theoretical framework, this research explores the ideological, symbolic, and structural changes in key stages of the ceremony, such as marhusip, marhata sinamot, and ulaon pesta. A qualitative methodology was employed, incorporating in-depth interviews, participant observations, and document analysis. The findings reveal that while core elements such as the exchange of ulos and the reinforcement of kinship ties remain intact, significant shifts have occurred, including a transition from communal preparations to catering services and the simplification of rituals due to economic pressures and modern lifestyles. This study lies in its specific focus on the Batak Toba community in an urban setting, highlighting how traditional ceremonies adapt to modern influences while retaining their cultural essence.

Abstract

This study evaluates the lexical density of reading materials in the K13 English textbooks used in Indonesian secondary schools, focusing on the alignment of text complexity with students' cognitive abilities and language proficiency levels. A total of 10 reading texts from both junior and senior high school textbooks were analyzed, covering various genres including narrative, descriptive, expository, and functional texts. Lexical density, defined as the proportion of content words (nouns, verbs, adjectives, and adverbs) relative to the total word count, was calculated for each text. The results revealed significant variations in lexical density across genres, with descriptive and report texts exhibiting higher complexity, while genres like narratives and procedures showed a more balanced lexical composition. The study found that texts with higher lexical density may be challenging for lower-level learners, while more balanced texts are likely more accessible. These findings suggest that, while some texts are appropriately challenging, others may require adjustments to better cater to students' proficiency levels. The study highlights the importance of revising the K13 English textbooks to enhance their suitability for diverse learners and align more effectively with the goals of the K13 curriculum. The use of lexical density as an objective metric provides valuable insights for improving the readability and overall effectiveness of English language education in Indonesia. This research implies that curriculum designers and textbook authors should consider incorporating a wider range of text complexities to accommodate varying student proficiency levels, ensuring equitable learning opportunities and improved language development outcomes

Abstract

This study analyzes the promotional brochures of two universities, Universitas Islam Sumatera Utara (UISU) and Universitas Muhammadiyah Sumatera Utara (UMSU), using Askehave and Nielson's (2005) framework for move analysis. The framework identifies nine moves, including attracting attention, greeting, identifying the sender, detailing content, and establishing contact, among others. The analysis reveals both similarities and differences in how these institutions present themselves to prospective students. Both brochures use visually appealing designs, structured layouts, and detailed content to engage readers and emphasize institutional credibility. UISU’s brochure prioritizes practical details, such as scholarships, facilities, and operational transparency, aiming to provide prospective students with comprehensive and actionable information. Conversely, UMSU’s brochure emphasizes its "Grade A" accreditation, Islamic values, and unique identity, positioning itself as a prestigious institution in Sumatera. The findings highlight how higher education institutions employ tailored strategies in their promotional materials to address the needs and aspirations of their target audiences. This study provides valuable insights into effective communication practices in higher education marketing, emphasizing the importance of balancing institutional goals with audience expectations

Abstract

This study explores the cognitive stylistic features of Maroon 5’s song “Animal” through the lens of conceptual metaphor theory and schema theory. Employing a qualitative descriptive design, the research examines the interplay between metaphorical language and cognitive processes to uncover how figurative expressions evoke imagery, emotions, and conceptual mappings related to primal instincts and desire. The analysis focuses on identifying metaphorical expressions such as hunting and predation, interpreting their cognitive and emotional resonance. The findings reveal that metaphors and vivid imagery in the song not only depict themes of obsession and vulnerability but also activate cognitive schemas, connecting listeners to the raw, instinctual aspects of human nature. This study contributes to the field of cognitive stylistics by providing insights into how language interacts with cognition to construct meaning and elicit emotional responses in artistic texts.

Abstract

The lack of adequate learning media for Class VIII PAI subjects at SMPN 2 Payakumbuh served as the impetus for this research, as it has adversely affected the overall learning process. To address this issue, the study focused on the development of PAI learning media tailored to Class VIII, ensuring it met validity standards. The objective was to design valid learning media using the Lectora Inspire application for use at SMPN 2 Payakumbuh. This study employed a developmental research approach based on the 4D model, which encompasses four main stages: Define, Design, Develop, and Disseminate. However, this research was confined to the Develop stage. The findings indicate that the learning media achieved validity criteria, as evidenced by its alignment with the CP, TP, and ATP standards, as well as the suitability of its graphics, layout, and typography. Expert validation, conducted by two PAI content specialists and one media expert, rated the quality of the interactive learning media produced using the Lectora Inspire application as "very valid," with an average validation score of 92.1%. The implications of this research suggest that the integration of interactive and validated learning media, such as the Lectora Inspire application, can enhance the teaching and learning process, providing educators and students with more effective tools to achieve learning objectives.
