Abstract

This narrative review examines the role of strategic communication in crisis management, focusing particularly on its effectiveness in fostering public trust during the COVID-19 pandemic. The study aims to explore how transparent, responsive, and technology-integrated communication strategies influence collective behavior and institutional legitimacy. Using literature sourced from databases such as Scopus, Web of Science, and PubMed, this review applies thematic analysis to synthesize findings across three dimensions: government public communication, digital media engagement, and internal organizational resilience. The results reveal that governments employing multimodal communication—combining factual messaging, symbolic narratives, and interactive channels—are more successful in promoting compliance and minimizing misinformation. Countries with open, participatory approaches generally report higher levels of public trust compared to those with top-down, controlled messaging. Additionally, media digitalization facilitates real-time feedback, enhances public engagement, and contributes to crisis transparency. However, systemic challenges such as fragmented communication systems, lack of adaptive training, and weak interagency coordination remain prevalent. These findings suggest the need for integrated policy frameworks that emphasize proactive, dialogic, and technologically enhanced communication strategies. Future studies should focus on developing context-specific models that accommodate cultural and institutional nuances. This review underscores that strategic communication is an indispensable pillar of effective crisis management and should be embedded as a fundamental element of public governance systems.

Abstract

This research examines how Arabic and French historical and contemporary dominance influences intergenerational communication practices in Amazigh in rural Moroccan communities. The Amazigh language, historically the main marker of the Berber community's collective identity, now faces structural and symbolic pressures from state linguistic policies and social representations that privilege the dominant language. This research uses a literature-based qualitative approach with thematic analysis methods on policy documents, legal products, and institutional and media discourse related to the position of the Amazigh language. The analysis results show that the dominance of Arabic and French impacts not only institutional domains such as education, bureaucracy and the media, but also weakens intergenerational linguistic transmission and creates identity distortions among the younger generation of Amazighs. The Amazigh language is slowly being shifted from its public communicative and cultural symbolic function, becoming a domestic language that lacks legitimacy in the national social system. The absence of substantive policy implementation exacerbates this process of marginalization despite constitutional recognition since 2011. In conclusion, linguistic dominance in Morocco's postcolonial context has created communication disruption and an identity crisis within the Amazigh community. Therefore, revitalizing the Amazigh language requires a legal-formal, community-based, and intergenerational approach. This study provides a theoretical and practical basis for a more inclusive language policy, strengthening postcolonial sociolinguistic discourse in the Maghreb region.

Abstract

In the digital era, virtual teams have become the norm in global work environments. However, communication within these teams is often hindered by rigid organizational structures inherited from traditional office settings, especially in healthcare settings where the stakes of miscommunication are significantly higher. This narrative review explores how structural barriers and inadequate adaptation to digital communication platforms compromise interpersonal interaction and team performance. The study employs a comprehensive literature review approach, synthesizing evidence from empirical studies and theoretical models to analyze the challenges and propose strategic interventions. The results indicate that inflexible hierarchies, lack of informal communication spaces, and poor integration of collaborative technologies significantly disrupt information flow and trust-building in virtual teams. Additionally, undefined roles and insufficient digital infrastructure contribute to confusion and miscommunication. The discussion emphasizes the urgency of adopting flexible structures and policies that support real-time, inclusive, and culturally sensitive communication. The review concludes that organizations must implement adaptive work frameworks, invest in digital training, and promote leadership models that align with virtual team dynamics. Recommendations include integrating AI-enabled feedback systems, developing operational guidelines for communication platforms, and designing cross-cultural training programs. These strategies are critical to overcoming structural communication barriers and enhancing team synergy in remote and hybrid environments.

Abstract

This narrative review investigates the impact of influencer marketing on consumer behavior, with a focus on the dimensions of influencer credibility, parasocial relationships, generational response differences, and the emerging role of virtual influencers. The study aims to synthesize current literature and provide an integrative framework to understand how these factors shape consumer purchase intent in digital contexts. Using a narrative synthesis methodology, the review draws from recent empirical studies and theoretical models to analyze how psychological mechanisms and systemic factors interact in influencer marketing. Key findings reveal that credibility attributes such as trustworthiness, expertise, attractiveness, authenticity, and consistency are fundamental in influencing consumer trust and brand engagement. Parasocial relationships enhance emotional connections between influencers and followers, mediating the effectiveness of endorsement. Furthermore, generational differences in digital behavior necessitate personalized communication strategies. The review also highlights the dual nature of virtual influencers, offering consistent branding but facing challenges in perceived authenticity. Systemic influences—such as platform algorithms, regulatory frameworks, and ethical standards—play a critical role in either enabling or constraining the reach and effectiveness of campaigns. This review underscores the urgency for adaptive, ethical, and transparent marketing practices. It recommends future research into culturally inclusive frameworks, long-term engagement metrics, and data-driven personalization strategies. The findings contribute to a deeper understanding of digital consumer psychology and provide actionable insights for both scholars and marketing practitioners in the age of social media.

Abstract

In the rapidly evolving digital landscape, university students increasingly confront ethical violations on social media platforms, ranging from privacy breaches to cyberbullying and misinformation. This study investigates how students in Banggai Regency, Indonesia, perceive and respond to unethical content encountered online. Employing a qualitative descriptive approach, data were collected through in depth interviews and digital observations with active social media users across multiple platforms. Thematic analysis guided by Miles and Huberman’s model revealed that students employ a combination of cognitive appraisal and avoidance strategies, including skipping, unfollowing, reporting, blocking, and content filtering, to navigate unethical digital environments. Findings highlight the role of psychological resilience, digital literacy, peer norms, and platform design in shaping student behaviors. Furthermore, student led initiatives such as digital ethics campaigns and peer fact checking groups emerged as critical interventions promoting responsible digital engagement. These insights underscore the transformative potential of youth agency in fostering ethical online cultures. The study contributes to the broader discourse on digital citizenship by emphasizing the need for integrated digital ethics education and collaborative policy interventions.

Abstract

This study examines the role of TikTok in shaping the social behavior and self perception of adolescents in Kendari City, Indonesia. Situated within an interpretivist paradigm, a qualitative descriptive case study was conducted involving 120 adolescents aged 15–18 years. Data collection employed participatory observation, baseline questionnaires, and semi structured interviews, analyzed through thematic coding and matrix displays. The findings reveal that TikTok usage fosters both positive and negative psychosocial outcomes. While 42% of respondents reported increased self confidence through creative engagement, 32% experienced social pressure to conform to trending challenges, and 12% reported negative social comparisons. Algorithmic recommendation systems were found to significantly influence content exposure and behavioral normalization, aligning with the emerging "algorithmic conformity" model. Peer interactions were enhanced through trend discussions and collaborative video creation; however, relational distancing was also observed. Content consumption was overwhelmingly entertainment driven, reinforcing homogenized digital cultures. This study contributes to the expanding literature on adolescent digital socialization by emphasizing the hybrid influence of peer dynamics and algorithmic architectures. The findings advocate for integrated digital literacy, emotional regulation, and platform transparency initiatives to promote healthier digital ecosystems for adolescents.

Abstract

This research examines the message of resistance against capitalism conveyed by the tomato farmers in Cikareumbi village of Lembang sub-district through the cultural event of Rempug Tarung Adu Tomat or, as it is simply called, the “tomato battle”. Methods: This research adopts a critical discourse approach with a qualitative method. Results: The research shows that the Cikareumbi tomato farmers present their message in two steps. Firstly, they let their tomatoes go bad. Secondly, they start the tomato battle event. In practice, the message of resistance is delivered through the symbolisms found in the tomato battle. The guards represent capitalism that has made the farmers suffer, the mask worn by the guards represents the falseness of capitalism, the tomato battle represents the unity and strength of the tomato farmers against capitalism. Meanwhile, the processing of rotten tomatoes used in the battle into fertiliser and new seeds represents their class’ independence. Conclusion: Their action is propelled by two things, i.e., the unfair price set by the bourgeoise class and the lack of government’s support for the farmers. Their resistance is ultimately against capitalism that is represented by the bourgeoise class and their message also conveys their wish to be supported by the government.

Abstract

Women’s representation in Indonesian local politics is hindered by structural and cultural barriers, including gender stereotypes that deem women less suitable for leadership. This study explores how Putri Karlina navigated these challenges during the 2024 Garut Regional Election. Using a qualitative approach, data were gathered through in-depth interviews with her media team, observations of campaign activities, and analysis of social media content. The study focuses on Karlina’s rhetorical strategies, drawing on Aristotle’s ethos, pathos, and logos. The results show that Karlina strengthened her credibility (ethos) by consistently engaging with the community and addressing social issues. She used emotional appeals (pathos) through personal stories, local language, and empathetic interactions to connect with voters. Additionally, she employed logical arguments (logos) by presenting data-driven visions and concrete solutions to public problems. This combination of rhetorical strategies not only enhanced her public image as a competent and empathetic leader but also helped overcome gender biases in a male-dominated political environment. The findings contribute to the understanding of gender dynamics in political communication, especially in the context of local elections.

Abstract

Digital activism has become a defining feature of civic engagement in Southeast Asia, where social media platforms function as both spaces of empowerment and instruments of control. This narrative review aims to analyze how digital activism shapes political discourse, identity formation, and collective action in the region. Literature was systematically retrieved from databases including Scopus, PubMed, and Google Scholar, using Boolean strategies and thematic keywords such as digital activism, civic engagement, social media, and Southeast Asia. Inclusion criteria focused on peer-reviewed studies offering empirical insights, while exclusion criteria eliminated works lacking data or regional specificity. The findings reveal that youth and marginalized groups use social media to construct civic identities, mobilize protests, and amplify their voices globally. Political consumerism, symbolic online practices such as hashtags and memes, and transnational solidarity campaigns illustrate the innovative forms of digital engagement emerging in the region. However, challenges remain significant. Disinformation campaigns, censorship, surveillance, and structural inequalities restrict inclusivity and diminish the sustainability of digital activism. Comparative perspectives suggest that while Southeast Asia shares similarities with global trends, its unique socio-political context amplifies both opportunities and risks. Policy frameworks are crucial in shaping outcomes, with transparent governance, independent regulation, and digital literacy initiatives identified as key enablers of sustainable civic participation. The review concludes that digital activism represents both promise and peril, requiring context-sensitive policies and future research to address limitations and expand understanding. Key challenges include disinformation, censorship, and structural inequalities that demand targeted policy responses.

Abstract

This study employs a narrative review approach to examine how information systems reshape strategic communication management within public institutions worldwide. Specifically, it investigates how such systems contribute to efficiency, transparency, accountability, and citizen engagement while identifying key barriers that hinder their full potential. Literature was systematically gathered from major databases including Scopus, Web of Science, PubMed, and Google Scholar, using targeted keywords such as “Information Systems,” “Strategic Communication,” “Public Institutions,” “E-Government,” “Transparency,” and “Accountability.” Studies meeting inclusion criteria consisted of peer-reviewed research with methodological clarity, focusing on outcomes relevant to public communication. Findings reveal that information systems streamline internal communication, improve productivity, and foster transparency through open data portals, enhancing trust and accountability. Platforms for e-participation and online feedback have strengthened stakeholder involvement, though effectiveness varies by region due to infrastructural, cultural, and political factors. Leadership style, human resource capacity, and organizational culture were identified as key determinants of successful adoption. Comparative evidence highlights the disparity between developed and developing regions, underscoring the importance of context-specific strategies. Despite these advances, barriers such as inadequate infrastructure, resistance to change, and limited digital literacy persist. Addressing these challenges requires investment in infrastructure, capacity-building, and supportive policy frameworks. Future research should broaden geographic representation, incorporate qualitative and longitudinal studies, and explore the role of emerging technologies. These steps are crucial for leveraging information systems to achieve more inclusive and transparent public governance.
