Abstract

This study aims to analyze the influence of social media on the purchasing decisions of Generation Z in the city of Palembang, especially on food delivery services such as Shopee Food. Social media, which has become an integral part of Gen Z's life, plays an important role in shaping consumer purchasing decisions, especially through content that includes promotions, consumer reviews, and influencer recommendations. This study uses a qualitative approach with a case study design, where data is collected through in-depth interviews with Generation Z consumers, Shopee Food business actors, and digital marketing experts. The results of the study show that social media content, such as discount promos, influencer recommendations, and content personalization, has a big influence on purchasing decisions. In addition, the ease of use of the application, menu variety, and service quality are the main supporting factors in choosing Shopee Food services. This research suggests that Shopee Food continues to utilize social media as the main marketing strategy to reach consumers, while adapting their marketing approach to the needs and preferences of consumers in the city of Palembang to maintain competitiveness.

Abstract

Social media has become a vital component in crisis communication, particularly during global emergencies such as the COVID-19 pandemic. This narrative review investigates how social media platforms are utilized by formal and informal actors to disseminate crisis-related information, shape public perception, and influence behavioral responses. Using a systematic literature review approach, scholarly articles were sourced from databases including Scopus, PubMed, Google Scholar, and Web of Science, focusing on studies from 2010 to 2024 that explore digital crisis communication in public health, natural disasters, and political crises. The review finds that governmental and health institutions use social media to broadcast real-time updates and counter misinformation. Informal communicators, such as influencers and citizen journalists, play a significant role in extending message reach, though not without challenges related to accuracy. Factors like digital literacy and public trust in institutions emerge as key determinants of communication effectiveness. Strategies such as clear messaging, visual aids, real-time engagement, and culturally contextualized content were identified as successful practices. This review highlights the critical need for education-driven interventions and collaborative communication frameworks that enhance public understanding and institutional legitimacy. It concludes that adaptive, data-driven strategies tailored to audience behavior and systemic contexts are essential for effective crisis communication in the digital age.

Abstract

In the digital age, journalism faces a multitude of ethical challenges that demand critical reassessment of traditional media ethics. This narrative review investigates how communication ethics in journalism and social media have evolved, focusing on themes such as misinformation, transparency, media accountability, and cultural interpretations of ethical standards. Drawing on over fifty peer-reviewed studies sourced from Scopus, Google Scholar, and other databases, the review synthesizes empirical data and theoretical insights to evaluate the current state and future direction of media ethics. The methodology involved targeted keyword searches and thematic categorization of literature from 2010 to 2024, encompassing global perspectives with particular attention to Southeast Asia and Sub-Saharan Africa. The findings reveal that adherence to journalistic codes of ethics correlates strongly with public trust and media credibility. Furthermore, fact-checking initiatives, media literacy programs, and ethical journalism training have demonstrated effectiveness in countering misinformation and enhancing ethical engagement. Discussion highlights the systemic influence of political regimes, market forces, and cultural values in shaping journalistic practice. While regulatory and educational interventions show promise, structural barriers and digital disruption remain significant obstacles. The review concludes by recommending adaptive, context-sensitive ethical frameworks and greater international collaboration to strengthen journalistic integrity and combat misinformation in a rapidly changing media environment.

Abstract

This narrative review explores the current state of gender representation across traditional and digital media platforms. The study aims to synthesize existing literature to understand how gender roles are portrayed, how structural systems influence representation, and what strategies can mitigate disparities. Employing a narrative method, this review analyzed peer-reviewed articles and grey literature sourced from Scopus, Web of Science, and Google Scholar, using a combination of Boolean search strategies to ensure a comprehensive dataset. Findings show that traditional media continues to depict women in stereotypical roles, while non-binary identities remain underrepresented or mischaracterized. In digital media, influencers reinforce aspirational gender norms, yet also create opportunities for visibility and activism. Intersectional research reveals that individuals with overlapping marginalized identities face compounded misrepresentation. Structural barriers—such as media ownership, editorial bias, and algorithmic filtering—sustain these portrayals. Comparative studies underscore the influence of national policy and cultural context on gender narratives. This study concludes that integrated interventions are essential to promoting authentic and diverse gender representations. Media literacy education, inclusive regulatory frameworks, and algorithmic reforms are key to disrupting entrenched inequalities. Further research should focus on longitudinal impacts and explore culturally specific media contexts to enrich global understanding.

Abstract

Effective communication strategies have become indispensable in environmental advocacy amid escalating ecological crises. This narrative review explores how participatory and digital communication frameworks influence environmental awareness, public engagement, and policy transformation across varied sociopolitical contexts.Drawing on empirical literature from 2010 to 2024, sources were identified through Scopus, Google Scholar, and PubMed using terms like "environmental communication," "advocacy strategies," and "digital engagement."Studies were selected based on peer-review status, empirical relevance, and focus on participatory and multimedia approaches. The findings indicate that participatory communication, social media, narrative storytelling, and immersive technologies play pivotal roles in shaping environmental discourse and mobilizing public action.Visual and digital media significantly enhance emotional engagement, message clarity, and behavioral response. However, communication success often depends on systemic factors such as governance models (e.g., democratic vs. authoritarian regimes), economic capacity (e.g., campaign funding), and cultural alignment (e.g., values embedded in messaging). This review offers a multidimensional synthesis of participatory and technology-driven communication frameworks, highlighting policy and practice implications, particularly in low- and middle-income countries.

Abstract

Digital inequality is a growing concern that contributes significantly to socioeconomic disparities in education, healthcare, and economic participation. This narrative review aims to explore the structural and systemic dimensions of digital inequality and its implications for marginalized communities. Literature was sourced from databases including Scopus, PubMed, and Google Scholar using a combination of targeted keywords and Boolean search techniques. Articles were selected based on relevance, methodological diversity, and contextual alignment. The review identifies critical themes, including the impact of unequal digital access on educational attainment, disparities in telehealth usage, and limited economic opportunities in digitally excluded populations. Findings reveal that regions with weak digital infrastructure and low digital literacy consistently report lower educational performance, reduced health engagement, and limited employment prospects. Public policy, infrastructure investment, and digital training emerge as decisive factors that either mitigate or exacerbate these challenges. The discussion emphasizes the necessity of equitable digital policy design, community-based interventions, and collaborative global strategies to ensure inclusive digital development. Despite growing research on digital inequality, gaps remain in longitudinal analysis and intersectional perspectives. This review recommends future studies to adopt multidimensional frameworks to better inform policy and practice. In conclusion, addressing digital inequality is not only a technological necessity but also a social imperative. Bridging the divide is essential for creating a more just, inclusive, and resilient society in the digital era.

Abstract

This study explores the evolving role of digital activism in shaping public discourse and political mobilization through social media. It aims to assess how strategic digital tools such as hashtags, visual content, and storytelling facilitate collective identity and enhance civic engagement. Employing a narrative review methodology, the paper synthesizes empirical studies from multiple contexts including the Arab Spring, #BlackLivesMatter, and #EndSARS. Results reveal that social media enables real-time coordination, emotional resonance, and participatory communication that extend beyond traditional media boundaries. These campaigns are found to effectively generate pressure on policymakers and influence public opinion. However, systemic challenges persist. Studies indicate that algorithmic bias, digital surveillance, and censorship disproportionately affect activists, particularly in authoritarian regimes. Additionally, disparities in digital infrastructure and literacy contribute to uneven access and representation. The discussion highlights that while digital platforms serve as powerful tools, their impact is mediated by political, economic, and technological contexts. The study concludes by emphasizing the need for policy reforms that enhance digital inclusion, protect online freedoms, and ensure algorithmic accountability. Future research should address regional variations in digital mobilization and examine the interplay between online and offline activism. These insights contribute to a more comprehensive understanding of digital activism in a rapidly evolving communication landscape.

Abstract

This study explores how Artificial Intelligence (AI), particularly Natural Language Processing (NLP) and machine learning, can be leveraged to analyze public discourse on climate change and improve climate communication strategies. Focusing on four key questions, the research examines how AI classifies public sentiment, identifies dominant topics, detects framing structures, and generates actionable insights to inform targeted communication. Over one million climate-related posts were collected from Twitter and Facebook between January and June 2024. Sentiment analysis using a fine-tuned BERT model categorized posts into positive, negative, and neutral sentiments, while Latent Dirichlet Allocation (LDA) revealed key topics. Framing analysis employed supervised machine learning to classify posts into narrative frames, and AI-powered visualization tools were used for interpretation. The results indicate a polarized sentiment distribution: 45% negative, 35% positive, and 20% neutral. Negative posts centered on skepticism and political inaction, while positive posts supported renewable energy and activism. Thematic analysis highlighted five key topics: scientific evidence, activism, economic implications, political debate, and environmental justice. Framing analysis revealed four dominant frames—climate urgency, economic impact, political action, and environmental justice—that shape public perception. Temporal sentiment shifts aligned with major events, suggesting public discourse is responsive to political and activist developments. This research demonstrates the potential of AI to provide scalable, data-driven insights into public climate discourse. By integrating these insights into strategic planning, communicators can design more effective, emotionally resonant messages, enhancing public engagement and supporting collective climate action.
