Abstract

Zoonotic bacterial diseases such as colibacillosis and salmonellosis in poultry affect animal health and productivity and pose a risk to human health. Sukahaji Bird Market in Bandung City is a high-traffic site for live poultry trading and close human-animal interaction, making it a potential hotspot for zoonotic disease transmission. This work aimed to improve poultry traders' knowledge on the bacterial zoonotic diseases and promote the application of basic biosecurity measures as a preventive effort. In this work, implementing methods involved three main stages namely pre-activity, main activity, and post-activity. The pre-activity stage involved coordinating with the market managers and institution partners, developing simple surveys, and preparing the educational materials (pamphlets and posters). The main activity was conducted through an interactive education approach, distribution of printed materials, survey completion, and the provision of hand sanitizer to support the hygiene practices. In the post-activity stage, the evaluation process was carried out throughout surviving 30 poultry traders to assess their knowledge, attitudes, and practices related to biosecurity. Results showed that 96.67% of traders were not aware of bacterial zoonotic diseases in poultry, while 93.3% were able to recognize clinical signs of sick birds. Furthermore, although most traders had implemented basic hygienic practices, their understanding of zoonotic diseases remained limited. Both printed educational media and the personalized approach have an effectiveness in enhancing awareness. Moreover, applying the community engagement activities could support the One Health strategy through integrating animal, human, and environmental approaches to control the zoonotic disease transmission in the traditional markets.

Abstract

Bullying is a serious problem in elementary schools that can affect the mental state and social relationships of students. This service program aims to apply good communication as a way to prevent bullying at Al Fazhira Integrated Islamic Elementary School, especially in the case of a student with special needs who feels excluded because he is a victim of bullying. The methods used include direct observation, discussion with teachers, identification of needs, and conducting interesting and interactive socialization for 5th grade students with the use of films, posters, and discussions. Five aspects of positive communication were introduced, namely openness, empathy, support, positive attitude and equality. The results of this activity showed that students became more aware of the impact of bullying, dared to report if there was an incident, and had a better sense of empathy. The teachers also responded favorably and were willing to incorporate this approach into their teaching and learning activities. It can be concluded that positive communication is effective in creating an inclusive and safe school environment through early detection, reducing power differentials, and empowering victims and witnesses of bullying.

Abstract

The risk of periodontitis is greater in pregnant women with malocclusion, especially if they use fixed orthodontic appliances (brackets) because it is difficult to maintain oral hygiene. Untreated periodontal infection can trigger systemic inflammation and the production of pro-inflammatory cytokines, which have an impact on uterine contractions and fetal growth, and increase the risk of premature birth and low birth weight (LBW). The purpose of this community services is to carry out preventive educational efforts on the risk of periodontitis in pregnant women with malocclusion at the Sedati Health Center, both those undergoing orthodontic treatment and those not. This community services method is through interactive education, clinical examinations and facial profile photos, oral cavity to 51 pregnant women with malocclusion who undergo routine examinations at the Sedati Health Center. Interactive education by providing question and answer sheets, clinical examinations including gingival sulcus, gingival recession, periodontal exudate, tartar, tooth mobility and taking photos of the face and oral cavity profile. Result, all pregnant women do not understand periodontitis and its risks, pregnant women who use brackets have a higher percentage of pus/periodontal exudate indicators (10%) and loose teeth (30%) compared to those who do not use brackets. Pregnant women without brackets show a higher prevalence of gingival recession (19.5%) and tartar (97.6%). Conclusion, preventive education is needed comprehensively for pregnant women with malocclusion, both those who use brackets and those who do not, in order to reduce the risk of periodontitis which can have an impact on pregnancy complications.

Abstract

Limited access to healthcare facilities and low health literacy remains significant challenges, particularly on Hiri Island, North Maluku. SMP Negeri 10 Ternate City is one of the schools on Hiri Island equipped with a school health unit (UKS) room, yet it has not been utilized optimally. This community service initiative aimed to promote health independence among school members by providing education on Clean and Healthy Living Behavior (CHLB) and training in the use of basic medical tools. The methods included CHLB education for students and mentoring for teachers in the operation of sphygmomanometers and digital thermometers, which were also provided as support for the UKS facility. Evaluation was conducted through a pre-test and post-test using a questionnaire consisting of 10 true/false questions. The analysis revealed a significant improvement in students knowledge (p 0.05) regarding CHLB, with average scores increasing from 57.89 (pre-test) to 73.68 (post-test). Furthermore, students enthusiasm during the activities indicated that an interactive educational approach can foster awareness of the importance of healthy living habits. This program not only yielded short-term benefits but also paved the way for sustainability and replication in other schools.

Abstract

Sausage is a processed product made from chicken or beef obtained from a mixture of finely ground meat and flour with added seasonings and food additives that are stuffed into casings. The filling ingredient commonly used in sausage production is tapioca flour. One alternative to tapioca flour is durian seed flour. Durian seed flour can be used as a filling ingredient in processed chicken products because it contains 88.68% starch. The addition of durian seed flour is one alternative that can be used to increase sausage variety and improve sausage quality. The method used to solve the problem was an institutional approach, namely a process of continuous guidance and assistance throughout the activity. There were 20 participants involved in this activity, consisting of women from the Paraita Women Farmers Group (KWT). The assistance was focused on guiding and assisting the KWT women in applying the technology of processing livestock products in the form of sausages. The community service activity was carried out by conducting counseling, followed by training and mentoring for the women of KWT in Pulliwa Village, Bulo District, Polewali Mandar Regency. This activity provided information to KWT that sausage can be made not only with tapioca flour, but also with cheaper durian seed flour, thus opening up business opportunities to increase members' income. The community service activity through counseling, training, and mentoring for the women of the Paraita Women Farmers Group (KWT) in Pulliwa Village, Bulo District, Polewali Mandar Regency successfully increased the knowledge and skills of the participants in processing livestock products into sausage products with the innovation of adding durian seed flour as a filler.

Abstract

Ensuring a safe and health-promoting school environment requires adequate teacher competence in first aid management. However, limited teacher knowledge and practical skills in providing first aid remain a critical concern in many elementary schools. This community service initiative aimed to implement community nursing care through educational interventions and first aid demonstrations focusing on injury and choking management, thereby improving teachers knowledge and preparedness. The activity employed the community nursing process comprising assessment, diagnosis, planning, implementation, and evaluation. A windshield survey revealed frequent minor injuries among students, insufficient first aid facilities, the absence of a School Health Unit (UKS), and several environmental risk factors for injuries. Interviews with the principal and UKS instructor indicated that while injuries were common and choking incidents had occurred within the past six months, teachers had not previously received formal training or procedural guidance. The intervention included lectures and demonstrations delivered to three UKS instructor teachers, utilizing PowerPoint slides, leaflets, teaching aids, and guidebooks. Knowledge and skills were evaluated using pre-test and post-test instruments and an observation checklist. Results indicated a substantial increase in knowledge from 33.3% to 100%, with wound management skills rated as good (100%) and choking management skills rated as good in most participants (66.7%). In conclusion, educational and demonstrative interventions effectively enhanced teachers first aid competence. The program has potential for replication by schools, community health centers, and education authorities as a promotive and preventive strategy at the elementary school level.
