Abstract

Inadequate agricultural waste management can result in environmental issues such as soil and water pollution. Conversely, organic waste holds significant potential for conversion into economically valuable products like compost, enhancing soil fertility and reducing farmers' reliance on chemical fertilizers. This initiative aims to enhance the skills and knowledge of the Women Farmers Group Ingin Maju in Cot Masam Village, Kuta Baro Sub-District, Aceh Besar District, through tailored technological training. The training focuses on compost production and local microorganisms to enable the productive and sustainable utilization of organic waste, fostering entrepreneurial development in the creative economy sector rooted in organic farming. Training methodologies encompass lectures, discussions, and practical exercises involving 40 members of the women farmers group. Results indicate a substantial enhancement in participants' comprehension, particularly in compost production, with a knowledge understanding effectiveness (KUE) of 90.95% and 62.3% for LMO. Training effectiveness (TE) also reflects positive outcomes, showing a 47.6% increase for compost and 45.3% for LMO. Despite compost training being deemed more effective, the LMO training also yields favorable impacts, albeit necessitating refinements to align outcomes with compost training. Overall, this engagement successfully elevates the capacities of KWT in organic waste utilization, potentially catalyzing community-based creative economic development in this village.

Abstract

In Indonesia, the elderly population is steadily increasing, and dementia is emerging as a significant public health concern. A lack of awareness regarding dementia prevention, particularly through nutrition-based interventions such as increased fish consumption, remains a major issue. This community service program aimed to educate fishermens wives and elderly residents by promoting the processing of fishery products, especially fish and shellfish, into various nutritious food products as a preventive measure against dementia. The program was implemented in Bulak, a coastal area of Surabaya, Indonesia, targeting fishermens wives and elderly community members through the Dudu Galak Program. The initiative focused on innovating the processing of local marine products into both dry and wet foods that are not only nutritionally rich but also economically valuable. The methods employed included educational outreach, hands-on training, and mentoring in the development of diverse, nutritious, and marketable seafood-based products. Additionally, the program provided education on dementia in older adults and strategies for its prevention. The results of this initiative demonstrated that fishermens wives and elderly residents successfully developed a variety of high-nutrition fish- and shellfish-based foods and snacks with promising market potential. Moreover, participants gained a better understanding of dementia and recognized that increasing fish consumption can serve as an effective preventive strategy. Through this program, it is expected that participants will improve their household income, enhance their knowledge of dementia, and promote greater fish consumption within fishing families as part of dementia prevention efforts among the elderly.

Abstract

One of the efforts to reduce disaster risk is through sustainable and long-lasting disaster knowledge transmission. A cultural approach can serve as an effective method to convey disaster-related knowledge across generations. One form of cultural product considered suitable as a medium for delivering tsunami disaster messages in Aceh is the Aceh Songket textile, which has coexisted with the Acehnese community for centuries. This community service aims to create a new design motif for Aceh Songket that carries a reminder message about the 2004 Indian Ocean Tsunami disaster. The activity was conducted in collaboration with an Aceh Songket weaving group, involving the process of motif design and prototype creation. A rational design method was employed, using structured, detailed, and clear steps to achieve an optimal design solution. The outcome of this service is a motif entitled Tsunami, which is expected to be produced by Songket artisans and widely disseminated within the community, thereby serving effectively as a medium for long-term and intergenerational disaster risk awareness and knowledge regarding the Aceh Tsunami. In conclusion, the Aceh Songket motif with the Tsunami theme as a disaster education medium in the community has been successfully developed, with the main product being a tsunami-themed motif for Aceh Songket weaving. This design is anticipated to be broadly adopted by Acehnese weavers as an alternative for new motif development, which has been rarely explored previously.

Abstract

Sinambela Village has a high potential for geological and hydrometeorological disasters. This is influenced by the biophysical conditions of the village. A significant portion of the community in Sinambela Village is not yet well educated about natural disasters and disaster mitigation. Therefore, disaster mitigation efforts are necessary, considering that floods and landslides have previously struck Simangulampe Village in Bakti Raja Sub-District, which is in the same district as Sinambela Village. This incident occurred on December 1, 2023, resulting in 12 people missing and one confirmed fatality. The primary cause of the flooding was heavy rainfall. In addition to hydrometeorological factors, flooding in Sinambela Village was also caused by various other factors, including sedimentation in the downstream section of the river, reduced vegetation cover in the upstream area, and river channel narrowing. Based on the situational analysis and the challenges faced by the community, it is crucial to build a society that is prepared for disasters, capable of anticipating them, and able to adapt to them an effort known as disaster mitigation. The proposed solution involves community involvement in disaster planning, emergency response, and post-disaster recovery. This community-based initiative is known as Disaster-Resilient Village (DESTANA). Given the increasing risks and challenges of hydrometeorological disasters, this study aims to ensure that the community remains alert and prepared to face potential hazards in their environment, enhances their ability to withstand threats, and strengthens their overall resilience.

Abstract

The degradation of coral reefs and threats to turtle populations due to anthropogenic activities in Pante Paku Village, Jangka Sub-District, Bireuen District, have prompted the implementation of a community-based marine ecosystem conservation program. This program aims to conserve coral reefs and protect turtles through a participatory approach. A qualitative descriptive method was adopted, involving initial surveys, program socialization, community training, and ecosystem monitoring. The implementation of these activities coincided with the Student Organization Capacity Building Program (PPK Ormawa). The establishment of a Tourism Awareness Group (POKDARWIS) was also carried out within this program, making it a key strategy in increasing community participation in the sustainable management of coastal resources. Training activities focused on coral reef conservation through transplantation methods using rafts or concrete substrates, and turtle habitat protection through beach cleaning and the construction of semi-natural hatcheries. Monitoring activities, conducted from August to October 2024, used the Line Intercept Transect (LIT) method to evaluate coral reef conditions and collect turtle population data. The results of the program implementation indicate that this approach is effective in increasing public literacy and awareness regarding the importance of maintaining the sustainability of marine ecosystems. In conclusion, this program not only contributes to the preservation of marine biodiversity but also strengthens the socio-economic aspects of coastal communities through the sustainable utilization of resources.

Abstract

Upas fungal disease on coffee plants is a threat that causes young plants to die. Poor access to infrastructure, especially roads to coffee farms for women farmers, as well as a lack of training on Good Agricultural Practices (GAP) and coffee agritourism, are also significant obstacles to the economic development of coffee farmers. In addition, population growth and new land clearing in unauthorized areas further worsen environmental and coffee land conditions in Kekuyang Village. This service aims to educate and strategize the vulnerability of coffee farmers in facing climate change in Kekuyang Village, Aceh Tengah District. The coffee farmer vulnerability education program has been implemented successfully through Focus group discussion (FGD). The team delivered educational materials focused on the application of adaptation strategies with a multidimensional approach. In the human aspect, training and raising awareness of sustainable agricultural practices are required. In the social dimension, strengthening community networks and cooperation with various parties is very important. Meanwhile, in the environmental aspect, crop diversification and the use of coffee varieties that are more resistant to climate change can help minimize risks. From a financial perspective, better access to insurance and value-enhancing products is a priority. In addition, improvements to agricultural infrastructure and the application of environmentally friendly technologies are key strategies to deal with the challenges of climate change in an integrated manner.
