Abstract

This study reveals that Suminto A. Sayuti’s rural habitus functions not merely as a biographical backdrop, but as a strategy of differentiation that actively transforms crafted experiences, oral literacy, and wayang traditions into symbolic authority within the post-digital literary landscape. An analysis of the poetry collection Ketika Diri adalah Kepulangan dan Keberangkatan (2023), in-depth interviews, and publisher statements indicates that the poet’s liminal position—neither fully at the center nor the periphery—is not a sign of marginality, but rather a space of agency that enables a productive resistance to the logic of virality, instant poetry, and algorithmic simulation. Aesthetic strategies emphasizing lengthy processes, rigorous curation, and claims of a “human touch” are validated by non-platform institutions as “counterbalances” amidst the acceleration of digital content production. Theoretically, this study expands the Bourdieusian framework of the sociology of literature by demonstrating that habitus is not structural determinism, but rather a space of reflective negotiation capable of functioning as an epistemological filter against data colonization. Furthermore, these findings affirm that artistic autonomy need not arise from frontal resistance but can be constructed through the inhabitation of an in-between space that is both ethical and meditative. The research findings provide a cultural map for the sustainability of literary practices in the algorithmic era, while also offering an epistemological alternative for interpreting the creative process that is not confined to digital metrics or heroic narratives of resistance.

Abstract

This research is motivated by a critical educational paradox in West Sumatra, where high public reading interest indexes contradict the low functional reading competence among secondary school students. This cognitive discrepancy is primarily caused by the reliance on nationally standardized teaching materials that alienate students from their socio-cultural environment. To address theoretical and practical gaps in digital ethnopedagogy, this research aims to systematically design a conceptual blueprint of an interactive flipbook prototype that utilizes Augmented Reality (AR) to materialize abstract Minangkabau cultural concepts. The methodology employed in this research is a descriptive-analytical approach focused specifically on a preliminary study and conceptual design. The scope of this research is deliberately delimited to comprehensive needs analysis and structural product design. Empirical data were gathered from eighth-grade students and teachers at SMP Negeri 7 Padang through questionnaires, interviews, and document analysis, utilizing ethnopedagogy as an analytical tool and cognitive multimedia theories as a reference framework. The findings of this research empirically confirmed a critical demand for interactive visual media rooted in the socio-cultural environment. Based on these needs, the design phase in this research successfully formulated a pedagogically sound blueprint integrating the 5M scientific approach with immersive 3D AR features, wherein local cultural icons are represented as analytical case studies for popular scientific texts. In conclusion, this research establishes a novel pedagogical framework synergizing immersive technology and local wisdom. For future academic endeavors, transitioning from the structural blueprint of this research to empirical technological development is highly recommended to quantitatively evaluate its effectiveness in improving reading literacy.

Abstract

While the digitization of academic editing is often considered to linearly improve performance, the internal mechanisms that differentiate the impact of tools and learning processes are rarely explored. This study aims to analyze the effects of using the Track Changes feature on editing accuracy and its relationship to metacognitive regulation and cognitive load of aspiring editors. Using a quasi-experimental Non-equivalent Control Group Design, this study involved aspiring student editors divided into an experimental group (Track Changes) and a control group (conventional). Data were collected through an editing accuracy test and analyzed using Normalized Gain and Cohen's d effect size. The results showed that the experimental group experienced a significant increase in editing accuracy (g = 0.53) compared to the control group (g = 0.19). Inferential analysis yielded a Cohen's d value of 1.18, indicating a large effect of tool use on editorial performance. These findings demonstrate that Track Changes functions as a cognitive scaffold that reduces external cognitive load, particularly on surface-level errors such as mechanics and typography. However, improvements in logic and discourse were limited, suggesting that this technology is more effective as a metacognitive mediator than as a substitute for higher-order linguistic reasoning. The unique contribution of this study lies in the empirical separation of the tool's technical impact from natural learning progression, which provides a theoretical basis for integrating technology into professional editing education curricula.

Abstract

BIPA learners not only need to understand the structure of the Indonesian language they are learning, but also its functional aspects in accordance with the situation and context of use. This study aims to analyze the request speech act competence of BIPA learners from the perspective of second language pragmatic acquisition. Based on a sociopragmatic perspective, utilizing the variables of Distance, Power, and Rank of Imposition proposed by Brown & Levinson, eight speech situations were constructed as instruments for data collection. Through a written discourse completion test, 17 upper-intermediate BIPA learners from Taiwan participated as respondents in this study. The data analysis employed the framework of request speech act realization as summarized by Schauer. The findings indicate that the BIPA learners have developed their pragmatic competence in producing request speech acts, although they still face difficulties in adjusting levels of politeness and situational context. Based on the realization of speech acts in terms of core and peripheral elements, the utterances produced tend to be overly long and excessively polite. This tendency is influenced by instructional emphasis on formal language, as well as differences in the pronominal system between Indonesian and Mandarin as their first language. The challenges identified are related to developing pragmatic competence, the influence of first-language cultural norms, and limited experience with real-life contexts. Thus, these upper-intermediate BIPA learners are at a transitional stage and are not yet fully flexible in adapting to contextual demands. The implications of this study highlight the importance of context-based BIPA instruction and the need for more explicit integration of pragmatic aspects in second language learning.

Abstract

This study examines the realization of request speech acts produced by English as a Foreign Language (EFL) students in academic contexts by considering variations in power and social distance. Requests constitute face-threatening acts (FTAs); therefore, their realization is strongly influenced by social and relational factors. This study employed a qualitative descriptive design supported by frequency counts and percentage distributions to quantify strategy use across situational configurations. The data were collected through a Discourse Completion Task (DCT) involving 34 undergraduate students from different semesters of the English Education Study Program at STKIP Taman Siswa Bima. The data were analysed based on request strategy classifications and mitigation devices and were interpreted through the framework of politeness theory and learner pragmatics. The findings generally indicate that conventionally indirect strategies tend to predominate in request realizations across configurations of power and social distance, though variation was observed across individual cases. In contexts characterized by asymmetrical power relations, students predominantly tended to avoid direct strategies and employed layered mitigation devices, such as apologies, politeness markers, and grounders. Meanwhile, social distance exerted a relatively consistent influence on the level of directness, as interactions with close interlocutors allowed for the use of more direct strategies. In addition, the qualitative analysis also identified recurrent patterns such as over-politeness, over-directness, and underuse of power. These tendencies are interpreted as possible reflections of local sociocultural norms and potential indications of pragmatic transfer, although pragmatic transfer was not the primary focus of the study.

Abstract

This study aims to reinterpret Propp’s narrative structure in children’s storybooks by positioning interrogative sentences as pedagogical discourse strategies and examining their implications for the development of children’s critical literacy. This study adopts a qualitative approach within a pedagogical discourse framework, drawing on Vladimir Propp’s model to identify narrative functions in the text. The results showed that Lomba Tebak Cepat and Bermain Teka-teki followed similar narrative patterns, repeating Propp’s functions ξ, M, and Pr eleven times. On the other hand, Buah Apa, ya? followed a different sequence—ξ – M – Pr – G – Q – N – I—with the M – Pr – G pattern appearing three times. The interrogative sentences in all three books were either total or partial and mainly informative, using the word “apa” and the Indonesian particle “-kah.” Repeating these questions helped shape new narrative patterns. Overall, Propp’s structure can be simplified as E – P – p1, p2, p3… – X – Y – R – E, showing how a mix of interrogatives and narrative functions makes these storybooks more engaging and interactive for children. The findings show that interrogative sentences function as pedagogical strategies that actively engage children in understanding the story. Through interrogative sentences, children are encouraged to think critically and use their reasoning to make sense of the text, thereby supporting their literacy development, especially in critical and reflective thinking.

Abstract

This study examines the representation of Minangkabau local wisdom in five nationally standardized BIPA (Indonesian for Foreign Speakers) textbooks and three supplementary materials utilized in Padang. Employing qualitative content analysis alongside critical discourse analysis (CDA), the research investigates how sociocultural knowledge is constructed, prioritized, or silenced in pedagogical materials. The findings reveal three critical gaps: (1) the complete absence of Kato Nan Ampek (the traditional speech-level system); (2) only two out of twelve Sumbang Duo Baleh behavioral norms are implicitly referenced; and (3) the matrilineal kinship system is consistently framed as a static ‘traditional custom’ rather than a dynamic, living social structure. These omissions point to a systematic marginalization of Minangkabau sociopragmatic knowledge, which may hinder learners’ development of authentic intercultural competence. To address these empirical and pedagogical gaps, the study proposes the BITD (Budaya, Identitas, Teks, dan Dialog) region-based thematic model, which integrates localized wisdom into BIPA instruction through contextually grounded materials, pragmatic awareness, and participatory learning frameworks. This research contributes to ongoing debates on decolonizing language pedagogy and offers actionable guidelines for curriculum developers, textbook authors, and BIPA instructors seeking to foster culturally responsive language education.

Abstract

This study examines language contestation in the virtual linguistic landscape (VLL) of the official website of Malang City Government, focusing on the interaction between Indonesian and Javanese dialects. While previous studies emphasize the dominance of national languages in digital governance, this study critically interrogates whether such dynamics represent contestation, coexistence, or symbolic marginalization. Using a concurrent mixed-methods design, data were collected from 55 indexed web pages through systematic content analysis, supported by policy documentation and semi-structured interviews with website administrators (n = 3). The analysis integrates linguistic distribution, language style, and communicative function within a VLL framework. The findings reveal that Indonesian overwhelmingly dominates administrative and informational functions, while Javanese dialects appear in limited symbolic forms, such as service names and cultural expressions. Rather than indicating active contestation, this pattern reflects a hierarchical linguistic order shaped by institutional norms, regulatory constraints, and digital governance practices. This study contributes theoretically by reconceptualizing “language contestation” in digital institutional spaces as structured hierarchy rather than direct competition. Practically, it highlights the need for more functional integration of regional languages in digital governance to support linguistic diversity beyond symbolic representation.

Abstract

Local beliefs in the myths surrounding Lake Kuranding are relevant to the lake's existence. This study aims to uncover the ecological values embedded in the Lake Kuranding folktale and their implications for environmental sustainability. This study uses an ecocritical approach, focusing on the social phenomena of the Tanjung Beringin Village community, South Bengkulu, regarding the ecological implications of the Lake Kuranding folktale. The ecological dimension of local narratives tends to be underexplored, even though these narratives are related to the construction of awareness in environmental preservation. This research is a major step towards understanding how the local narrative of the Lake Kuranding folktale represents environmental preservation. Data sources come from literature, interviews, and observations. The results indicate that the Lake Kuranding folktale contains ecological values, namely: (1) self-sufficiency and self-awareness, (2) knowledge of land allocation, and (3) preservation of water and soil sources. The implications of these three ecological values provide numerous benefits, such as the preservation of the lake ecosystem and water sources for two sub-districts in South Bengkulu, an abundance of fish resources, and a foundation for food security for the people of South Bengkulu. The mythical aspects of the Kuranding Lake folklore have transformed into ecological values that guide the community in preserving their natural environment. The existence of the Kuranding Lake folklore today is not only relevant to the oral folklore preservation practices of the Serawai ethnic group in South Bengkulu but also has implications for the lake's sustainability and plays a significant role in the social and economic aspects of the community in South Bengkulu.

Abstract

Tungguk Tembakau is a traditional ceremony marking the beginning of the tobacco harvest in Senden Village, Boyolali, as an expression of gratitude to God. Although it is carried out regularly, a deep understanding of its value and symbolic meaning has begun to fade among the community. This study aims to explore the cultural values and symbolic meanings of the Tungguk Tembakau tradition. Using qualitative methods, this study integrates James Spradley's ethnographic approach and Roland Barthes' semiotics. Data were collected through participant observation, in-depth interviews with purposively selected informants (traditional leaders, village officials, farmers), and documentation. Data analysis was conducted through two systematic approaches: first, ethnographic analysis (domain, taxonomy, components, and cultural themes) to reveal value orientations; second, semiotic analysis through a two-stage system of signification (denotation and connotation/myth) to dissect ritual artifacts. Data validity was ensured through triangulation of sources and methods. The results of the study reveal four cultural value orientations: (1) The relationship between humans and God as an expression of gratitude; (2) The relationship between humans and nature, reflecting agricultural cosmology and ecological dependence; (3) Interpersonal relationships through mutual solidarity; and (4) The relationship between humans and time through respect for ancestors. Semiotically, each procession is a symbolic language. The picking of 16 tobacco leaves symbolizes obedience to the cosmic order, while the parade functions as a ritual to ward off evil spirits. Various forms of gunungan and tamping offerings connote prosperity, soil fertility, and collective hopes for a smooth seasonal transition. This study concludes that Tungguk Tembakau is a complex symbolic system that strengthens cultural identity and maintains harmony between spirituality and the social order of agrarian communities.
