Abstract

Beginning reading is a fundamental skill that must be mastered by elementary school students, particularly in the early grades, as it serves as the foundation for further learning. Students with lowbeginning reading ability may experience difficulties in understanding instructional materials and achievingacademic success. This study aimed to describe the role of parents in supporting the beginning reading skillsof second-grade students at SDN Lerep 04, West Ungaran, Semarang Regency. This study employed aqualitative descriptive design involving one second-grade teacher, six parents, and six second-gradestudents. Data were collected through interviews and documentation and were validated using sourcetriangulation. The data were analyzed through data reduction, data display, and conclusion drawing. Thefindings revealed that parents played important roles as educators, facilitators, companions, and motivators. They supported children by introducing letters, guiding them in reading syllables and simple words, providing learning materials and facilities, accompanying them during reading activities at home, andencouraging them through praise, advice, and rewards. However, several obstacles were identified, including gadget use, limited parental time, children’s changing moods, and the influence of the playenvironment. The study concludes that the optimization of parental roles significantly contributes to thedevelopment of children’s beginning reading skills. Therefore, strong collaboration between schools andfamilies is essential to foster literacy from an early age. Keywords: parental role, beginning reading, reading skills, elementary school students

Abstract

This study examines the relationship between Islam, Indonesian identity, and modernity in NurcholishMadjid’s conception of the state and its relevance to Indonesia’s constitutional system. The issue of relationsbetween religion and the state within the context of the nation-state constitutes the main background of thisresearch, particularly in a plural society such as Indonesia, which adopts Pancasila as its state ideology.Nurcholish Madjid’s thought is selected because it offers a substantive approach that rejects theformalization of Islam as a state ideology while emphasizing the internalization of Islamic ethical values innational and state life. This research employs a qualitative approach with a library-based research designthrough the analysis of Nurcholish Madjid’s works and other relevant scholarly sources. The findingsindicate that Nurcholish Madjid’s concept of the state positions the state as a worldly institution that mustbe governed rationally, democratically, and justly. The integration of Islamic values as a moral orientation,Indonesian identity as a national context, and modernity as a framework of rationality produces an inclusiveand adaptive conception of the state. The relevance of this thought is reflected in various aspects ofIndonesia’s constitutional order, including the rule of law, democracy, social justice, good governance, andthe affirmation of pluralism. This study concludes that Nurcholish Madjid’s thought makes a significantcontribution to the development of constitutional law discourse in Indonesia by offering a synthesis ofreligious values, nationalism, and modernity as the foundation for building a democratic, pluralistic, andcivilized state. Keywords: Country, Relevance, Nurcholish Madjid

Abstract

This article examines the thought of Muhammad Abduh, a central figure of modern Islamic reform,as a response to the intellectual stagnation and challenges of colonialism in the 19th century. The approachuses a conceptual-philosophical method with critical hermeneutic interpretative analysis of MuhammadAbduh's works textually, intertextually, and contextually. This article analyzes the philosophical foundations, implementation, and influence of Abduh's thought. The results show that Abduh's thought is built on threefundamental pillars: the integration of knowledge, critical rationality, and education as emancipation.Muhammad Abduh's thought is relevant to the views of realism, progressivism, reconstructionism, andreligious humanism, which emphasize an education that is puritanical, progressive, visionary, and glorifieshuman reason. His intellectual legacy has proven to be highly influential transnationally, especially inIndonesia, with the birth of modern Islamic educational institutions such as schools under the auspices ofMuhammadiyah, Al-Irsyad, and Persis. Muhammad Abduh's thought has strong implications forcontemporary Islamic education, particularly in the urgency of developing an integrative curriculum andcultivating critical (ijtihad) and scientific thinking as solutions to the problems of Indonesian Muslims. Keywords: Muhammad Abduh, Philosophy of Education, Islamic Modernism, Al-Azhar
