Abstract

Chronic Suppurative Otitis Media (CSOM) is a persistent middle ear infection characterized by tympanic membrane perforation and prolonged or recurrent ear discharge lasting more than two months. Objective: This case report aims to analyze the clinical presentation and management approach in a patient with CSOM, as well as to evaluate the success of type II endoscopic tympanoplasty in repairing tympanic membrane perforation and restoring hearing function. Methodology: This case study utilized a qualitative approach, collecting data through physical examination, audiometric testing, and CT imaging to assess the condition of the patient's ears. The patient underwent type II endoscopic tympanoplasty on the right ear. Findings: A 52-year-old female patient presented with bilateral ear discharge for two months, mild conductive hearing loss in the right ear (39 dB threshold), and normal hearing in the left ear (24 dB threshold) with slight reductions at frequencies ≤1000 Hz and ≥4000 Hz. CT imaging revealed mucosal thickening in the Prussak space and bilateral mastoid air cells with sclerotic edges, with no cholesteatoma detected. After type II endoscopic tympanoplasty, the patient showed significant improvement, with the cessation of ear discharge and no major complications. Implications: This case highlights the importance of early diagnosis and timely intervention in managing CSOM, demonstrating that type II endoscopic tympanoplasty is an effective, minimally invasive surgical option to repair tympanic membrane perforations and prevent further complications, such as more severe hearing loss. Novelty and Contribution: This case report provides a new contribution to the management of safe type CSOM, emphasizing the success of type II endoscopic tympanoplasty as a less invasive surgical alternative to traditional methods, especially for patients with mild conductive hearing loss and recurrent ear infections.

Abstract

Printing workplaces involve diverse operational activities that may pose occupational safety and health (OSH) risks to workers. Objective: This study aims to identify potential hazards and assess occupational risk levels in a printing facility using the Job Safety Analysis (JSA) method, considering that printing, cutting, ink handling, and manual material handling activities may lead to work-related injuries and health disorders. Methodology: A descriptive observational approach was employed. Data were collected through direct workplace observations, interviews with workers and supervisors, and a review of work process documentation. The JSA procedure involved breaking down work activities into sequential steps, identifying hazards at each stage, and determining risk levels along with appropriate control measures. Findings: The results revealed exposure to mechanical, chemical, physical, and ergonomic hazards. Mechanical hazards were predominantly associated with printing and cutting machine operations, posing risks of hand injuries and crushing incidents. Chemical hazards were identified during ink handling activities, with potential health effects from skin contact and inhalation exposure. Ergonomic hazards were mainly observed during manual material handling tasks, increasing the risk of musculoskeletal disorders. Several identified hazards were classified as medium to high risk, indicating the need for prioritized preventive actions. Implications: The findings highlight the importance of implementing integrated OSH control measures, including engineering controls, administrative actions, consistent use of personal protective equipment, and the strengthening of workplace safety culture to reduce occupational risks in printing environments. Originality: This study provides a systematic, task-based hazard mapping of core printing processes using JSA, offering practical guidance for prioritizing risk control strategies in printing operations with medium to high risk levels.

Abstract

Diabetes mellitus (DM) is a growing public health concern worldwide, particularly in Indonesia, where its prevalence continues to rise, causing significant health and economic burdens. The need for effective, accessible, and safe therapies is critical, as current treatments often come with side effects and limitations. Alternative natural treatments, such as herbal remedies, are being explored for their potential to offer safer and more sustainable options for managing DM. Objective: This study aims to evaluate the antidiabetic effectiveness of ethanol extract of sweet mango leaves (Mangifera indica L. var. sweet mango) on reducing blood glucose levels in streptozotocin (STZ)-induced diabetic mice. Methodology: A true experimental post-test only control group design was employed using mice (Mus musculus) divided into six groups: normal control, negative control (STZ), positive control (glibenclamide), and three treatment groups of mango leaf extract with doses of 50, 100, and 150 mg/kgBW. The extraction was carried out using the maceration method with 70% ethanol, and the antidiabetic activity was tested over a 15-day period. Results: The results showed that administration of ethanol extract of sweet mango leaves significantly reduced blood glucose levels (p < 0.001) compared to the negative control. A dose-response pattern was observed, with a dose of 150 mg/kgBW providing the most significant blood glucose lowering effect, closely approaching the effectiveness of glibenclamide. Discussion: The antidiabetic activity of the extract is thought to be related to its bioactive compounds, such as flavonoids, phenolics, and mangiferin, which are believed to enhance insulin sensitivity, inhibit gluconeogenesis, and protect pancreatic β cells from oxidative stress. Originality and Contribution: This study provides new insights into the antidiabetic potential of the ethanol extract of sweet mango leaves (Mangifera indica var. Arum Manis), a variety not extensively studied for its effects on diabetes. The research contributes to the growing body of knowledge on natural-based therapies for DM, offering an alternative to conventional treatments with potentially fewer side effects and wider accessibility. The findings support the further development of mango leaf extract as a natural candidate for diabetes management.

Abstract

Excessive internet engagement has become increasingly common among young people and may develop into problematic internet use (PIU) that interferes with daily functioning. In emerging adulthood, the pressure to remain socially connected online can intensify fear of missing out (FoMO), which may undermine self-regulation and increase vulnerability to PIU. Objective: This study aims to empirically examine the effect of FoMO on PIU among individuals in the emerging adulthood stage. Methodology: A quantitative cross-sectional survey design was applied using purposive sampling. A total of 203 participants aged 18–29 years completed an online questionnaire (Google Forms). PIU was measured using an instrument based on Caplan’s (2010) dimensions, and FoMO was assessed using a scale based on Przybylski, Murayama, DeHaan, and Gladwell’s (2013) dimensions. Data were analyzed using simple linear regression. Findings: FoMO significantly and positively predicted PIU (F = 125.532; p < 0.05; R = 0.620; R² = 0.384). FoMO explained 38.4% of the variance in PIU, while the remaining 61.6% may be attributable to factors outside the model. Implications: The findings support the need for digital literacy initiatives and interventions targeting emotion regulation and self-control among emerging adults to reduce PIU risk. Future studies should incorporate additional psychosocial factors (e.g., depression, loneliness, social anxiety, and shyness) to better explain PIU and clarify underlying mechanisms. Originality: This study provides empirical evidence quantifying the contribution of FoMO to PIU specifically within an emerging adulthood sample characterized by intensive internet use, offering added value for prevention-oriented research and practice in digital mental health.
