Abstract

Stunting is a critical issue that needs to be addressed. The lack of independence among rural communities, particularly pregnant women and community health cadres, in preventing anaemia and stunting, as well as the absence of a dedicated forum for such activities, highlights the need to establish the For U No Anemia No Stunting (For U NAS) forum. This community engagement program aims to form For U NAS as a measure to prevent anemia and stunting in Kampung Bugis. The methods include establishing the forum, providing health education using the Si NaNing application, modules, and healthy kitchen demonstrations, as well as conducting pre-test and post-test evaluations. The results demonstrate the successful establishment of For U NAS and a significant increase in pregnant women's knowledge about anemia and stunting after the intervention. This forum serves as a platform for education, discussion, and social support, strengthening the independence of pregnant women. In conclusion, the formation of this forum has effectively improved pregnant women's knowledge of preventing anemia and stunting. This initiative is likely to continue with the development of peer support groups to enhance education efforts in the future.

Abstract

Malaria remains a serious health problem in Keerom District, Papua Province, with an Annual Parasite Incidence (API) of 368 per 1000 population in 2018. This community service activity aims to improve the knowledge of malaria cadres about vector bionomics and skills in making insecticide-treated bed nets in Jaifuri Village. The method used is counselling with flipchart media and a demonstration of making insecticide-treated bed nets. The activity was carried out on July 4, 2024, involving 12 malaria cadres and related stakeholders. The pre-test and post-test results showed a significant increase in knowledge; whereas before counselling, 80.66% of participants had low knowledge, but after counselling, 100% reached the good knowledge category. This activity also improved cadres' skills in making insecticide-treated bed nets, which are essential to malaria prevention. It can be concluded that this community service activity effectively increases the capacity of malaria cadres as the frontline in malaria control efforts at the community level.

Abstract

The lack of attention from various groups to the risks of food-related issues, such as food poisoning and cancer caused by harmful food additives, particularly affects the health of elementary school-aged children. The purpose of this community service program was to increase children's knowledge and understanding through education about the dangers of food coloring in snacks at UPT SPF SDN KIP Bara-Baraya II, Makassar City. The method of implementation included lectures in the form of educational sessions, demonstrations, pre- and post-tests, and the distribution of leaflets, aimed at assessing the participants' level of knowledge. The results of the community service program showed an improvement in participants' knowledge, with 26 participants (75%) categorized as having good knowledge, 5 participants (14%) in the moderate knowledge category, and 4 participants (11%) in the poor knowledge category. The community service activity concluded that out of 35 participants, there was a significant change in their level of knowledge after receiving education on the dangers of food coloring in snacks and its effects on children's health. It is recommended that students become more selective when choosing foods to consume, particularly avoiding those containing harmful coloring substances.

Abstract

Female workers on palm oil plantations are at high risk of pesticide exposure due to their involvement in spraying, fertilizing, and plant care activities. Pesticide exposure can cause various health problems, including disorders of the nervous system, respiratory, reproductive, cancer and other chronic diseases. This activity aimed to improve the capacity of female workers to recognize the dangers of pesticides, identify early symptoms of poisoning, and implement appropriate self-protection measures. The training was conducted through interactive methods, including education, discussion, and presentation of group discussion results regarding health complaints experienced while working on oil palm plantations. The results of the activity showed an increase in participants' knowledge and skills in recognizing health risks due to pesticides and knowing the procedures for reporting health complaints in the workplace. With this training, it is hoped that female workers on oil palm plantations can be more aware of the importance of self-protection, be able to identify early symptoms of pesticide poisoning, and contribute to creating a healthier and safer work environment.

Abstract

The community's clean water needs in Tanjungpinang are managed by the Tirta Kepri Regional Water Utility (PDAM). According to data from the Central Statistics Agency (BPS) of Tanjungpinang City in 2020, the population reached 227,663 people, resulting in an estimated clean water requirement of 22,766,300 liters per day (based on 100 liters per person per day for medium-classified cities). However, clean water production in 2020 only met 17.5 liters per person per day. The limited availability of clean water sources in schools has become a major obstacle in promoting Clean and Healthy Living Behavior (PHBS), as schools rely solely on PDAM supply and one well, which does not meet quality standards. The Rainwater Harvesting System (PAH) presents an alternative solution, considering Tanjungpinang's high and evenly distributed rainfall throughout the year. This activity aims to improve access to clean water in schools through the installation of PAH devices and educational outreach to teachers and students. Partners contributed in providing equipment and materials, as well as supporting sustainability evaluations, while schools were responsible for installation and maintenance of the devices. The results show that PAH devices have been effectively used as a source of clean water in the school’s prayer room (mushala) and that teachers and students have mastered their maintenance. This program has resulted in a mandatory output in the form of an activity report and an additional output in the form of intellectual property rights (IPR) for the PAH Pocket Book in support of Adiwiyata Schools.

Abstract

Childhood Pulmonary Tuberculosis (TB) remains a critical public health challenge in Indonesia, particularly in Sidodadi Village, Pringsewu Regency, Lampung. Community members and health cadres often lack sufficient understanding of  balanced nutrition as a preventive strategy against TB. This community engagement program aimed to improve the knowledge of mothers with toddlers and health cadres regarding child nutrition for TB prevention. The intervention included an initial survey, development of educational modules, interactive sessions for 20 families, targeted training for 20 health cadres, mentoring, and evaluation using pre-tests, post-tests, questionnaires, and observation. Results indicated a significant improvement in knowledge: from 50% to 82% in the mothers’ group,  and from 62% to 90% among health cadres. These improvements were attributed to interactive learning methods and the pivotal role of health cadres as agents of behavioral change, aligning with Social Cognitive Learning Theory. The program effectively enhanced knowledge capacity and has the potential to influence family nutrition practices and reduce the incidence of childhood TB. Recommendations include sustained mentoring, long-term impact evaluation, and development of advanced training modules for health cadres.

Abstract

Diabetes mellitus (DM) is one of the most prevalent non-communicable diseases in Tanjungpinang City, particularly in the working area of Mekar Baru Public Health Center. The coverage of healthcare services for DM patients in this area remains low, at only 70.42%. This condition increases the risk of chronic complications such as peripheral neuropathy, which may lead to diabetic foot ulcers. In 2022, 62 cases of diabetic foot ulcers were recorded at Tanjungpinang General Hospital. This community service program aimed to enhance the knowledge and skills of health cadres, families, and DM patients in conducting peripheral neuropathy screening through education and training. The program involved the head of the health center and NCD (non-communicable disease) program coordinators as mentors, and included cadres, families, and patients as active participants. The results showed a 100% increase in participants’ knowledge and screening skills, although the increase in patient visits to health facilities reached only 10%. Future plans include integrating neuropathy screening into regular elderly Posyandu or NCD Posbindu activities every 3–6 months. This initiative is expected to strengthen the role of health cadres in the transformation of primary healthcare services and improve the quality of life of DM patients.

Abstract

Indonesia is currently facing a double burden of disease, namely communicable and non-communicable diseases. To address this issue, the Ministry of Health (Kemenkes) has initiated a health transformation through six pillars, which are priority programs of the Ministry of Health of the Republic of Indonesia. Various efforts have also been made to reduce the incidence of Pulmonary Tuberculosis (Pulmonary TB) in the working area of Puskesmas Kampung Bugis. However, the activities carried out have not been optimal in reducing the number of Pulmonary TB cases in Tanjungpinang City, especially in the working area of Puskesmas Kampung Bugis. Therefore, there is a need for Community Empowerment, particularly of TB patients, in the management of Pulmonary Tuberculosis at home in the Puskesmas Kampung area of Tanjungpinang City in 2024. The objective of this community service activity is to provide education to the community, especially TB patients, in managing TB disease at home. The method of this community service activity involves health promotion on TB treatment efforts and prevention of TB transmission, which is carried out routinely through the direct delivery of material to the community, especially TB patients, using booklets/leaflets. The activity was held at the Kampung Bugis Health Center on October 2 and 20, 2024. The results showed that the average knowledge score before the education session was 70.5, while after the education session, it increased to 85.3. The conclusion is that there was an increase in the knowledge of Pulmonary TB patients in managing Pulmonary TB at home. Educational activities for Pulmonary TB patients, whether conducted by community health workers or health professionals, should be provided regularly so that pulmonary disease can be controlled in the community.

Abstract

Immunization is one of the most effective preventive efforts in reducing morbidity and mortality caused by infectious diseases in children under five years of age. Although the immunization program has long been implemented by the government, a lack of awareness among some mothers regarding the importance of mandatory immunization is still observed. This may be due to limited access to information, misconceptions, or insufficient health education. This community service activity aimed to enhance the understanding of mothers of toddlers about the importance of immunization through an educational approach conducted directly at the Integrated Health Post (Posyandu) within the working area of Umbansari Public Health Center. The activity involved health education sessions, interactive discussions, and the distribution of educational media such as leaflets. The primary target was mothers with children aged 0–5 years. The results showed a significant improvement in knowledge, with the average pre-test score increasing from 60 to 80 in the post-test. These findings indicate the effectiveness of community-based educational approaches in raising mothers' awareness about the importance of mandatory immunization. It is expected that similar activities can be implemented sustainably as part of strategies to improve the coverage of basic immunization programs.
