Abstract

The objectives of this research are to analyze product defects occurring in the production of MSG at PT Ajinomoto Tbk in Mojokerto and to identify the suitable improvement alternatives. Using DMAIC Six Sigma, this research started by classifying the defects using Critical to Quality (CTQ) tree. In the define stage, it was found that the causes of the defects are hopper jamming, broken MSG packaging, and MSG product spillage. The results from the define stage then underwent the measure stage to identify the production defect capability; the sigma scores of which were measured using Pareto Chart and Defect per Million Opportunity (DPMO). The scores were delivered to the analysis stage in order to identify the cause of the defect using Pareto Chart and Fishbone diagram. The results were analyzed further using Failure Mode Effect Analysis (FMEA) to pinpoint the highest cause of the defects, suggesting that the broken packaging and product spillage were caused by suboptimal monitoring and poor routine maintenance. The improve stage suggests alternate repair (control) to reduce the production defect. Based on the findings above, the suggestions are improving the SOP, increasing the frequency of machinery maintenance, and conducting continuous improvements to monitor the production process regularly.
