Abstract

Suicidal ideation is a significant mental health issue that has gained considerable attention, especially among adolescents. The psychological, social, and emotional changes that occur during adolescence often increase their vulnerability to mental health disorders. Various factors, both internal and external, can influence the emergence of suicidal ideation, including life meaning, which can affect an individual's tendency toward suicidal thoughts. Life meaning refers to how individuals assign meaning to their lives, which is believed to function as a protective mechanism against feelings of hopelessness and the tendency to end one's life. This study aims to examine the relationship between these two variables in adolescents. A quantitative approach with a correlational design and simple linear regression analysis was used in this study. The variables of suicidal ideation and life meaning were measured using a Likert scale. The sample consisted of 100 adolescents aged 12-21 years in Yogyakarta, with data collected through questionnaires distributed via Google Form and paper-based formats. Data analysis was conducted using Spearman's test with SPSS for Windows version 26. The results indicated a significant negative relationship between suicidal ideation and life meaning, with a correlation coefficient of -0.548 and a significance value of ρ = 0.000 (ρ < 0.05).

Abstract

The Enhanced Recovery After Surgery (ERAS) protocol has gained significant attention in recent years, particularly in its application to patients with compromised medical conditions. This protocol aims to optimize perioperative care, reduce the stress associated with surgery, and improve recovery outcomes. Literature reviews indicate that ERAS is beneficial across various surgical disciplines, including colorectal, neurosurgery, and orthopedics, particularly in elderly populations and patients with comorbidities. Studies show that ERAS reduces postoperative complications, hospital stays, and enhances patient satisfaction. Furthermore, it emphasizes a holistic approach to recovery, addressing not only physical but also mental and emotional well-being. Implementations of ERAS protocols in high-risk surgical scenarios, such as gastrointestinal and head and neck surgeries, underscores its relevance for medically compromised patients. The evidence supports the effectiveness of ERAS in improving clinical outcomes and promoting faster recovery, which is crucial for patients with complex health conditions.

Abstract

This study aims to explore the meaning of skincare usage among male students at the State Islamic University of North Sumatra (UINSU) Medan, using a qualitative approach with a descriptive-exploratory design. The study analyzes this social phenomenon through Roland Barthes' semiotic theory, which focuses on how meaning is created and communicated through signs in society. Six key concepts from Barthes' semiotic theory—sign, signifier, signified, denotation, connotation, and myth—are used to analyze how skincare usage is understood within the local context of the students. The research utilizes purposive sampling to select five informants: Imam, Shandy, Iqbal, Septian, and Haikal, all male students at UINSU Medan. Data was collected through in-depth interviews to explore their experiences, motivations, and views on skincare usage, as well as secondary data from literature related to global culture and male skincare. The findings show that the use of skincare among male students at UINSU Medan is influenced by several factors, including beauty standards popularized by the media and global culture, as well as religious values they adhere to. From a semiotic perspective, skincare products can be seen as "signs" representing self-awareness about appearance, with the "signifiers" being products such as facial cleansers, toners, and moisturizers. The "signified" is a shift in the understanding of masculinity, where skincare is no longer seen as feminine but as part of modern male identity. In "denotative" terms, skincare usage is understood as an act of maintaining cleanliness and skin health, while "connotatively," it reflects a change in the concept of masculinity, becoming more flexible. The "myth" that emerges is that self-care is a right for every individual, regardless of gender, and can be practiced by anyone without altering their masculine identity. This study provides insights into how global beauty culture influences the behavior of male students in self-care, considering the local social and cultural context in Indonesia.
