Abstract

Psychosocial risks are increasingly recognized as important non-physical occupational hazards, yet evidence on their simultaneous relationship with mental workload and work stress among teachers remains limited; this study addresses that gap in junior high schools in Makassar. This study aimed to determine the relationship between psychosocial risk, mental workload, and work stress among teachers. A quantitative cross-sectional study was conducted among 123 teachers selected through census sampling at SMPN 23 Makassar and SMPN 19 Makassar. Psychosocial risk was assessed using the Copenhagen Psychosocial Questionnaire (COPSOQ), mental workload using the National Aeronautics and Space Administration Task Load Index (NASA-TLX), and work stress using the Depression Anxiety Stress Scales-21 (DASS-21). Data were analyzed using univariate analysis and Spearman’s rank correlation test. Psychosocial risk was significantly associated with mental workload (p=0.016; r=0.218), indicating a weak positive correlation, and with work stress (p<0.001; r=0.546), indicating a moderate positive correlation. Higher psychosocial risk was therefore associated with greater mental workload and work stress. These findings support the need for school-based occupational health interventions focusing on balanced workload distribution, stronger social support, clearer role organization, and policies that promote teachers’ mental health and safer working conditions.

Abstract

Adolescent mental health literacy remains a major challenge, and practical educational media that can improve both knowledge and attitudes are still needed; this study evaluates a pocketbook as an accessible school-based mental health promotion tool. This study aimed to analyze the effect of pocketbook-based education on high school students’ knowledge and attitudes regarding mental health. A quantitative quasi-experimental study with a pretest-posttest control group design was conducted from March to April 2026 at State Senior High School 12 Makassar and State Senior High School 13 Makassar. A total of 128 students were recruited using convenience sampling and divided equally into intervention and control groups. The intervention group received mental health education using a pocketbook, while the control group received lecture-based education. Both approaches improved students’ knowledge and attitudes; however, post-intervention comparisons using the Mann–Whitney test demonstrated significant differences between the two groups for both outcomes (p<0.001). The pocketbook offered practical advantages by presenting information in an engaging, portable, and reusable format that supports repeated learning. These findings indicate that pocketbook-based mental health education can complement conventional teaching and may be integrated into classroom learning, school health services, and adolescent health promotion programs.

Abstract

Adolescent anemia remains a persistent public health problem despite widespread weekly iron supplementation, while evidence on integrated self-monitoring and digital adherence support in rural communities remains limited; this program evaluated a combined booklet and WhatsApp-based strategy. This community service program aimed to assess implementation of a TTD Monitoring Booklet integrated with a WhatsApp Group to support weekly iron supplementation adherence and improve hemoglobin status among adolescent girls in Dusun Bontopanno, Gowa Regency, Indonesia. A Community Development approach with a pretest–posttest design was implemented among 20 adolescent girls over 24 weeks. The intervention included anemia education, weekly tablet-consumption recording, WhatsApp reminders, motivational messages, interactive communication, and monitoring by facilitators and community health cadres. Adherence records showed that participants consumed 11–24 tablets during the intervention, with most consuming 17–23 tablets. Mean hemoglobin concentration increased from 11.83±1.04 g/dL at baseline to 13.22±0.90 g/dL after intervention (p=0.003). The proportion with hemoglobin <12.0 g/dL decreased from 45.0% to 5.0%. Integrating simple self-monitoring with accessible digital communication may provide a feasible, low-cost strategy for strengthening community-based weekly iron supplementation programs, particularly in rural and resource-limited settings.

Abstract

Although the Maternal and Child Health (KIA) Handbook is widely promoted in Indonesia to support maternal knowledge, child growth monitoring, and stunting prevention, evidence comparing predisposing factors influencing its utilization between urban and rural settings remains limited. This study aimed to determine the relationship between maternal predisposing factors and KIA Handbook utilization in urban and rural areas of South Sulawesi Province. A quantitative analytical observational study with a cross-sectional design was conducted from January to February 2025 among 126 mothers in the urban catchment area of Kassi Kassi Community Health Center, Makassar City, and 113 mothers in the rural catchment area of Bontoa Community Health Center, Maros Regency. Respondents were selected using purposive sampling, and data were analyzed using univariate and bivariate analyses. KIA Handbook utilization was higher in rural than in urban areas. In urban areas, attitude (p<0.001) and age (p=0.031) were significantly associated with handbook utilization, whereas knowledge (p=0.066) and education (p=0.215) were not. In rural areas, knowledge (p<0.001), attitude (p<0.001), and age (p=0.044) were significantly associated with utilization, while education was not (p=0.091). These findings support context-specific maternal health interventions that strengthen knowledge in rural communities and promote positive attitudes toward KIA Handbook utilization across both settings.

Abstract

Although local-food-based supplementary feeding is increasingly promoted as a sustainable strategy for addressing childhood undernutrition, evidence on participatory training that simultaneously strengthens caregivers’ knowledge and practical food-preparation skills remains limited. This community service program aimed to improve the knowledge and skills of mothers of undernourished children and community health cadres in preparing and utilizing local-food-based Supplementary Feeding (PMT). The program was conducted in the working area of Buntu Batu Community Health Center, Enrekang Regency, South Sulawesi, involving 35 participants. Activities consisted of nutrition education, interactive discussions, food-preparation demonstrations, and supervised hands-on practice using locally available ingredients. Knowledge was assessed using pre-test and post-test questionnaires, while practical skills were evaluated using observation sheets. The mean knowledge score increased from 56.6 before training to 78.2 after training, representing an increase of 21.6 points. Similarly, the mean practical skill score increased from 58.34 to 84.26, an improvement of 25.92 points. These findings demonstrate substantial descriptive improvements in participants’ capacity to select, prepare, and serve nutritionally appropriate local supplementary foods. Integrating nutrition education with practical training may therefore support community empowerment, household-level utilization of local foods, and sustainable public health interventions for preventing and managing undernutrition among children under five.

Abstract

Work-related musculoskeletal disorders remain common among fishing communities, yet integrated interventions combining ergonomic risk assessment, worker education, and anthropometry-based assistive equipment are still limited. This community service program aimed to assess musculoskeletal disorder risks, improve fishermen’s knowledge and skills regarding ergonomic work practices, and develop an ergonomic lifting-and-carrying aid in Untia Village, Makassar. The program involved 30 fishermen. Musculoskeletal complaints and postural risks were assessed using the Nordic Body Map and Rapid Entire Body Assessment (REBA), while ergonomics and occupational safety and health education was delivered through lectures, discussions, and question-and-answer sessions. Knowledge and skills were evaluated using pre-test and post-test assessments. An ergonomic transport trolley was developed using the Need, Idea, Decision, Action (NIDA) approach based on fishermen’s anthropometric data. The assessment identified high-risk working postures related to manual lifting, awkward trunk positions, and repetitive movements. Mean knowledge and skill scores increased from 42.1 before the intervention to 74.4 after the intervention, representing a 76.8% improvement. These findings indicate that combining ergonomic education with anthropometrically designed assistive equipment can strengthen occupational health awareness and support the reduction of manual handling risks among fishermen. Continued post-implementation monitoring is needed to evaluate sustained effects on working posture and musculoskeletal risk.
