Abstract

Older adults experience a decline in physiological function that increases their risk of various health problems, including infections resulting from inadequate genital hygiene and limited ability to perform self-health screening. Low health literacy further reduces their capacity for self-care, highlighting the need for community-based educational interventions to improve their quality of life. This community service program aimed to enhance older adults’ knowledge of genital hygiene, infection prevention, self-health screening, and early detection of disease warning signs. The program employed a one-group pretest–posttest design using a participatory educational approach. A total of 15 older adults aged 60 years and above in Gorontalo City were purposively selected as participants. Data were collected using a structured knowledge questionnaire and analyzed descriptively and comparatively. The results demonstrated a significant improvement in participants’ knowledge across all indicators, with the mean score increasing from 55.2 ± 8.4 on the pretest to 82.8 ± 6.2 on the posttest, representing a 49.5% improvement. The greatest increase was observed in genital hygiene (51.6%), followed by self-health screening (50.6%), recognition of disease warning signs (49.7%), and infection prevention (48.2%). Knowledge distribution shifted from predominantly low (60.0%) to high (73.3%), while the reduced standard deviation indicated more evenly distributed knowledge among participants. These findings suggest that participatory health education is effective in improving health literacy and supporting healthy aging.

Abstract

Tanjung Laut Indah Village, Bontang City, is a coastal area that is vulnerable to sea level rise, high tides, and tidal flooding, making an effective early warning mechanism essential for disaster risk reduction. This Community Service Program (PKM) aims to empower the coastal community through the implementation of an early warning system for sea level rise based on an ultrasonic sensor and WhatsApp notifications. The system employs a waterproof ultrasonic sensor integrated with an ESP32 microcontroller to monitor sea level changes in real time. Measurement data are compared with predefined threshold values to classify conditions into Safe, Advisory, Warning, and Emergency levels. When the measured water level exceeds the specified threshold, the system automatically sends warning messages to community members and relevant stakeholders via WhatsApp. The implementation method includes community needs assessment, system design and installation, user training on system operation and maintenance, and evaluation through functional testing and questionnaires. The expected outcomes are improved community awareness, preparedness, and capacity in responding to coastal hazards, the availability of an easy-to-use early warning system, and the establishment of a rapid, accurate, and sustainable information dissemination mechanism to support community-based disaster mitigation.

Abstract

Vector-borne diseases remain a public health issue in Indonesia. Low levels of community knowledge and poor attitudes regarding vector control can increase the risk of disease transmission. This community service activity aimed to improve community knowledge and attitudes through health education on vector control in West Lhoksukon Nga Village, North Aceh Regency. The activity employed a one-group pretest-posttest design involving 30 participants selected via purposive sampling. Education was delivered through lectures, discussions, and question-and-answer sessions. Evaluation was conducted using questionnaires administered before (pretest) and after (posttest) the educational intervention. Data were analyzed using univariate and bivariate methods, specifically the Paired Sample t-test, with a 95% confidence level (α=0.05). The results showed that the proportion of participants with a good level of knowledge increased from 70.0% to 93.5%, while the proportion with positive attitudes rose from 60.0% to 90.0% following the education. Statistical tests revealed significant improvements in both knowledge levels (p=0.006) and community attitudes (p=0.001). Health education on vector control is effective in enhancing community knowledge and attitudes, thereby serving as a valuable strategy to support the prevention of vector-borne diseases at the community level.

Health services included health checks, consultations, education, and medication administration as indicated, while humanitarian assistance in the form of basic necessities was distributed through coordination with local governments, village officials, health workers, and volunteers. The results of the activity showed a positive community response. The most common health complaints found included acute respiratory infections (ARI), skin disorders, fatigue, muscle and joint pain, and hypertension. The distribution of aid was on target and accompanied by education on post-flood disease prevention, the implementation of clean and healthy living behaviors (PHBS), and disaster preparedness. Abstract

The Village-Owned Enterprise (BUMKam) of Elseng Koya Koso, which manages a laying hen farming business, plays an important role in supporting the economic independence of the local community. However, its financial management has been conducted manually, resulting in several challenges, including unstandardized transaction recording, difficulties in preparing financial reports, low data accuracy, and limited managerial capacity in utilizing digital technology. This Community Service Program aimed to strengthen the financial governance of BUMKam through the development of a web-based transaction recording application while enhancing the managerial capacity of its administrators in operating the system. The program employed a participatory approach consisting of needs assessment through observation and interviews, application development and implementation, as well as training and technical assistance. The developed application facilitates the recording of income and expenditure transactions, systematic data storage, and the automatic generation of basic financial reports. The results demonstrate that the application was successfully implemented in accordance with the partner's operational needs and significantly improved the efficiency and accuracy of transaction recording, simplified the preparation of financial reports, and minimized recording errors commonly found in the previous manual system. Furthermore, the training program enhanced the administrators' knowledge and practical skills in utilizing digital technology to support business management. Overall, this community service initiative contributed to improving transparency, accountability, and efficiency in the financial governance of BUMKam while promoting digital transformation in community-based enterprises. The proposed model has the potential to be replicated in other Village-Owned Enterprises (BUMDes/BUMKam) with similar business characteristics to strengthen financial governance and support sustainable community-based economic development.
