Abstract

This study analyzes the poem "When the Evening Dove Floats" by Taufiq Ismail using Charles Sanders Peirce's semiotic approach. The poem represents the condition of Indonesia during a multidimensional crisis, both social, political, and natural. Through the analysis of Peirce's triad of signs (representamen, object, interpretan), this study identifies key symbols such as "the sky of morals that collapses," natural disasters, the Trisakti event, and "the evening dove floats." These symbols are studied to reveal their literal and connotative meanings, as well as various interpretations that may arise. The results of the analysis show that the poem reflects the poet's deep concern for moral collapse, injustice, violence, and the suffering of the people. The symbol "the dove" shows fragile hope amidst the sadness. This study concludes that the poem "When the Evening Dove Floats" is a sharp reflection of the socio-political conditions of Indonesia at the time of its creation, and shows the power of poetry in representing complex socio-political realities.

Abstract

This study investigates the characterization of students in Taufiq Ismail’s poems Takut 66 and Takut 98 through the framework of Sigmund Freud’s psychoanalytic theory, focusing on the id, ego, and superego. A descriptive qualitative method was used, with data consisting of words, phrases, clauses, and sentences that reveal personality traits and characterization techniques within the poems. The analysis demonstrates a balanced representation of the three personality structures. The id is reflected in students’ expressions of disappointment and anger toward governmental leadership. The ego emerges in the form of fear directed at lecturers, who function as enforcers of rules and constraints within the academic setting. The superego is manifested in students’ moral conscience, which drives them to protest as an expression of unrest, discomfort, and dissatisfaction with the highest governmental authority, the president.

Abstract

This study analyzes the worldview of the lower class in Wiji Thukul's poetry using Lucien Goldmann's genetic structuralism approach. Thukul's poems, born from the socio-political context of the New Order regime, depict the reality of suffering and the struggles of marginalized lower-class communities. Through Goldmann's theory, literary works are understood as manifestations of the collective consciousness of a social class, meaning Thukul's poetry is not merely individual expression but also reflects broader social conflicts. Employing a qualitative method, the research examines how poetic elements mirror the socio-economic conditions of the lower class, including repression, injustice, and the spirit of resistance. The analysis reveals that these poems serve as a medium for articulating resistance against oppressive social structures while fostering collective consciousness for change. Thus, Thukul's works can be interpreted as products of the dialectic between societal structures and the lower class's worldview, reinforcing the concept of homology between literary and social structures in Goldmann's genetic structuralism framework.

Abstract

The literary world offers a variety of works that introduce different views on life, social conflicts, and cultural dynamics. Two great literary works that are not only important in the history of their countries' literacy, but also make major contributions to global literary discourse. This study examines the relationship between two great literary works, Bumi Manusia by Pramoedya Ananta Toer and Ulysses by James Joyce, through a comparative literature approach. Both novels depict the struggle for individual identity in different social contexts: Dutch colonialism in Indonesia and modern Dublin society in the early 20th century. Bumi Manusia highlights Minke's struggle to find an indigenous identity amidst colonial oppression, while Ulysses explores Leopold Bloom's alienation in the seemingly monotonous routine of life. Through thematic, structural, and cultural analysis, this study shows the differences in narrative techniques of the two novels, with Bumi Manusia using a linear plot and Ulysses being more complex with a stream of consciousness. Despite their different cultural and historical backgrounds, both novels reflect the search for identity and social challenges that are relevant to their contexts. This comparative literature approach provides new insights into understanding the dynamics of human identity in their respective social, political, and cultural contexts.
