Abstract

This research aims to analyze cultural interactions between traders and buyers at the Medan Central Market in facing the rise of digital-based economic markets. Digital transformation and the growth of e-commerce have had a significant impact on trade patterns and consumer behavior, especially in traditional markets. The research method used is a qualitative approach with data collection techniques through in-depth interviews, participant observation and documentation. The research was conducted at the Medan Central Market with research subjects including textile wholesalers and consumers. The research results show that although digitalization has made transactions easier and expanded market reach, many traditional market traders have experienced a decline in income of up to 50% due to reduced customers. However, cultural interactions involving the bargaining process and personal relationships between traders and buyers remain the advantages of traditional markets. On the other hand, the adoption of digital technology by some traders is starting to help increase their competitiveness, although they are still hampered by digital infrastructure and literacy. This research emphasizes the importance of government support in providing digital training and infrastructure, as well as the need for a balanced adaptation strategy to maintain the cultural value of traditional markets in the digital era.

Abstract

Social transformation is a process of fundamental but significant changes that occur in social structures, interaction patterns, norms values, and institutions in a society. Social transformation can occur due to several important factors, one of which is education. Increased access and quality in education can empower individuals and groups to demand social change in a more positive direction and play a more active role in society. This action researchers do as a form of problem solving that occurs in the village of Lalang, Tanjung Pura District, Langkat Regency where the local community is still less concerned about the importance of non-formal education. Non-formal education needs to be applied to this village because of the many problems that occur such as low interest in learning, poor literacy levels and interest in reading, lack of community potential in career development, and so on. This research was conducted using a qualitative approach and descriptive method, where researchers collected data from various sources such as observation, interviews, and documentation. The various programs carried out in the implementation of non-formal education provide positive results and impacts for the community and researchers. The increasing enthusiasm and concern of the community about the importance of non-formal education has shown that the success in social transformation is being carried out.

Abstract

Stunting remains a significant health issue in Desa Pahlawan, Kecamatan Tanjung Tiram, driven by environmental, sanitation, and nutritional factors. This study explores the relationship between these factors and the prevalence of stunting, while examining the potential of local resources, such as marine fish, for improving nutrition. A qualitative approach, using in-depth interviews and field observations, revealed that poor access to clean water, low sanitation quality, and limited use of local food resources significantly contribute to stunting. Additionally, inadequate dietary practices and a lack of awareness about balanced nutrition exacerbate the issue. Though intervention programs such as community education and collaboration with local health posts have been implemented, further coordinated efforts are necessary for long-term change. This research provides insights into the causes of stunting in Desa Pahlawan and offers locally-based recommendations for more effective interventions.

Abstract

In Indonesia, markets can be categorized into two primary types: modern markets and traditional markets. Contemporary markets encompass expansive shopping centers, minimarkets, supermarkets, and malls, whereas traditional markets consist of local markets, street vendors, and micro enterprises. While both types of markets play a significant role in the economy, modern markets evolve at a quicker pace than traditional markets. The proximity of modern markets to traditional markets and small retail businesses generates a notable economic influence on the surrounding environment. Changes in consumer behavior patterns represent a significant impact. Consumers in contemporary markets are increasingly transitioning their shopping preferences from traditional venues to modern establishments, which provide enhanced convenience and a broader range of products. Qualitative research employs data collection methods that are often unstructured and adaptable, including in-depth interviews, participant observation, and focus group discussions. The approach employed by conventional traders in the mmtc market to promote their products involves direct promotions and effective communication, which positively influences traders and facilitates various aspects for consumers. Traders who maintain a welcoming demeanor tend to attract a larger customer base, as their quality service encourages consumers to purchase their products.

Abstract

This study aims to examine the survival strategies of Monza traders in Pajak Melati, Medan, in facing the challenges of digitalization that change traditional trading patterns to technology-based ones. Digitalization provides opportunities to expand the market, but also presents challenges in the form of tight competition with e-commerce platforms and low adoption of technology by traditional traders. This study uses a descriptive qualitative method with data collection through in-depth interviews, participant observation, and documentation studies. The research subjects consisted of five Monza traders who were selected purposively to ensure data diversity. The data obtained were analyzed using a thematic approach to identify survival strategies as well as obstacles and opportunities in adopting digital technology. The results of the study show that Monza traders implement survival strategies such as improving personal customer service, product diversification, implementing a hybrid system that combines physical and digital transactions, and competitive pricing strategies. The main obstacles found were low digital literacy of traders, limited capital to invest in technology, and tight competition with digital platforms that offer lower prices and wider market reach. On the other hand, there are great opportunities such as access to a wider market through digital media, operational efficiency with technology, changes in consumer shopping patterns that are more online, and support from government programs in the form of training and subsidies. This study concludes that Monza traders in Pajak Melati are able to adopt various creative strategies to survive in the digital era, although they still face obstacles that require systematic solutions such as increasing digital literacy and access to capital. This study contributes to providing insight into the adaptation of traditional traders to digitalization, especially in the traditional market sector with specific local characteristics.
