Abstract

Vocabulary mastering is essential in English as a Foreign Language (EFL) learning; however, many Indonesian public junior high school pupils continue to have major lexical weaknesses. The purpose of this study is to look into the lack of vocabulary mastery among seventh- and eighth-grade students at a public junior high school in Indonesia, as well as to discover the underlying causes of this problem. Data for 96 students were acquired using a qualitative descriptive technique, including classroom observations, student interviews, and teacher reports. According to the findings, students displayed inadequate vocabulary recognition, poor retention, and a low ability to utilise words effectively in context. Seventh-grade students had difficulty with basic word memory and expressed significant levels of fear and unwillingness to speak, whereas eighth-grade students struggled with pronunciation, grammatical word forms, and inconsistent vocabulary use. Traditional teaching approaches that emphasise rote memorisation without adequate contextual exposure were found as a primary contributor to children' restricted vocabulary development. The findings also show that a lack of relevant language input and limited possibilities for active vocabulary use had a negative impact on students' confidence and communicative skills. This study finds that enhancing vocabulary mastery necessitates instructional strategies that emphasise contextualised learning, regular exposure, and active participation with high-frequency terms. The findings have pedagogical implications for English teachers and policymakers in Indonesian junior high schools, helping to improve vocabulary training and promote long-term language development.

Abstract

Writing skills are one of the important skills in learning English, especially in writing descriptive texts. However, students often have difficulty developing ideas, using the right vocabulary, and constructing sentences in accordance with the structure of descriptive texts. To overcome this problem, this research examines the influence of collaborative learning on the descriptive writing skills of XI grade students at SMA Negeri 2 Pematangsiantar. This research used a quantitative approach with a quasi-experimental design. The research subjects involved 61 students from two sample classes, namely XI-7 (30 students) as the experimental class and XI-10 (31 students) as the control class, using purposive sampling. The experimental group was taught using Collaborative Learning, while the control group was taught using conventional methods. Data were collected through pre-test and post-test written tests, then analyzed using an independent sample t-test. The results showed that the average pre-test scores for the experimental and control classes were 55.67 and 51.26, respectively, while the post-test scores increased to 82.13 and 71.19. Thus, the experimental class experienced an increase of 26.46, while the control class only increased by 19.93. This comparison shows that the increase in the experimental class score was higher than that of the control class. The t-test produced a significance value of 0.000 < 0.05, which means that the null hypothesis (Ho) was rejected and the alternative hypothesis (Ha) was accepted. This indicates that there is a significant difference between students taught using collaborative learning and students taught using conventional methods. Based on the research findings, it can be concluded that the use of collaborative learning significantly improves students' writing skills in descriptive texts

Abstract

The problem in this study is the low learning outcomes of students in social studies, which is suspected to be influenced by a lack of learning motivation and low interest in learning. This study aims to determine the influence of learning motivation and interest on social studies learning outcomes of grade VII students at the UPTD of SMP Negeri 1 Pematangsiantar. This research is quantitative and uses descriptive methods. The study population was all students in grades VII/1-VII/10, totaling 320 students. Sampling was conducted using proportional random sampling, resulting in a sample size of 80 students. Data were collected through a questionnaire for the variables of learning motivation and learning interest, as well as daily test scores for social studies as learning outcomes. Data analysis techniques used included simple linear regression, multiple linear regression, t-test, F-test, and coefficient of determination. The analysis requirements were tested for normality using chi-square, based on the calculation of both variables' normal distribution. The analysis results showed a positive and significant effect of learning motivation on student learning outcomes, with a calculated t-value of X1 of 2.008 with a significance value (α) of 0.048, meeting the significance requirement of <0.05. Therefore, the calculated t-value (2.008) is greater than the t-table (1.668), and a significance value (α) of 0.048 <0.05. Furthermore, there is a positive and significant effect of learning interest on student learning outcomes, with a calculated t-value of X2 of 2.011 with a significance value (α) of 0.048, meeting the significance requirement of 0.05. Thus, the calculated t-value (2.011) is greater than the calculated t-value (1.668), and the significance value (α) is 0.048, <0.05. The F-test results indicate that both variables simultaneously have a significant effect on student learning outcomes, amounting to 15.851 with a significance level (α) of 0.000. The F-table value is 3.114. Therefore, the calculated F-value (15.851) is greater than the F-table (3.095), and the significance level (α) is 0.000 <0.05. The coefficient of determination (R²) of 0.272 indicates that 27.2% of the variation in student learning outcomes is influenced by learning motivation and learning interest, while the remaining 72.8% is influenced by other factors not examined in this study

Abstract

This study aims to determine the effect of using Cogni Anki Flash Card media on improving vocabulary mastery of eleventh grade students. Cogni Anki Flash Card is a learning tool or application that uses a spaced repetition method to help users remember vocabulary, use it grammatically and vocabulary information more effectively. This study uses a quantitative research design that uses experimental and control classes. The population of this study was eleventh grade students at SMK Negeri 1 Siantar in the 2025/2026 academic year. The researcher took two classes as samples in this study. The sample was XI DKV 1 as a control class consisting of 36 students where this class was only taught using conventional methods. While class XI DKV 2 consisting of 36 was an experimental class that was taught and received treatment from Cogni Anki Flash Card. Data were obtained through pre-tests and post-tests given to students in both classes. Data were analyzed using descriptive statistics, percentage increase in scores, normality and homogeneity tests, paired and independent t-tests, and effect size analysis. The findings revealed significant improvement in the experimental class, with the mean score increasing from 46.39 in the pre-test to 83.06 in the post-test. Based on the post-test classification, 5.6% of students achieved the “excellent” category, 44.5% were in “very good,” and 50.0% were in “good.” In contrast, the control class showed only modest progress, with the mean score increasing from 48.61 to 66.53. The distribution of the post-test results showed that 11.1% of students achieved the “excellent” category, 13.9% were “fair,” 27.8% were “fair,” and 8.3% were “poor.” Statistical analysis through paired and independent t-tests confirmed a significant difference between the two classes. The t-test for effect size calculation (Cohen’s d = 0.74) indicated a moderate effect on students’ vocabulary mastery. Furthermore, the t-test showed a p-value (2-tailed) of 0.000, which is below 0.05. Consequently, the null hypothesis (H₀) is rejected, and the alternative hypothesis (H₁) is accepted since the p-value (0.000) < 0.05. These findings indicate that Anki Flash Cards can be an effective tool to improve students' vocabulary mastery at SMK Negeri 1 Siantar

Abstract

Free nutritious meal program, learning motivation, student nutrition, education, government policy The Free Nutritious Meal Program (MBG) is a strategic government initiative designed to improve the quality of education by meeting the nutritional needs of students fairly and equitably, especially for children from low-income groups. This study aims to analyze the impact of the MBG program implementation on student academic motivation at SMP Negeri 8 Pematangsiantar. The method used is a mixed method approach that combines a comprehensive literature review with empirical data collection through attendance monitoring and semi-structured interviews involving students in grades 9-8 (n=28) during the period July-December 2024. The findings indicate that the MBG initiative substantially increased student learning motivation, as reflected in consistently high attendance rates (average 99.97%), increased learning concentration, enthusiasm for learning, and better social interactions within the school environment. However, the implementation of this program faces various obstacles including unequal distribution, budget constraints, minimal cross-sector coordination, and variations in student satisfaction regarding the quality and taste of the menu provided. Therefore, a strong oversight mechanism, comprehensive technical regulations, and integrated policy synergy are needed to ensure the sustainability and effectiveness of the program

Abstract

This study aims to find out The Relationship Between Emotional Intelligence and Learning Achievement of Class VIII Students of SMP Negeri 4 Muara, North Tapanuli Regency, Academic Year 2024/2025. Based on the results of research and discussion that have been described regarding the relationship between emotional intelligence and learning achievement in students of SMP Negeri 4 Muara, several conclusions can be drawn as follows: The emotional intelligence of students of SMP Negeri 4 Muara is in the medium to high category. This shows that most students have basic abilities in recognizing their own emotions, managing emotions, being optimistic, empathetic, and building social relationships with others. However, there are still a small number of students who are in the low category, especially in the aspect of emotional management. The learning achievement of students of SMP Negeri 4 Muara is in the high category. These results indicate that academically students have been able to achieve good learning outcomes in accordance with the standards set by the school. There is no significant relationship between emotional intelligence and learning achievement. The results of the Pearson Product Moment correlation test show a significance value greater than 0.05, so the hypothesis stating that there is a relationship between emotional intelligence and learning achievement is rejected. Thus, the high or low level of emotional intelligence of students does not directly influence the learning achievements they achieve.
