The existence of social media has now become a new public space, where social media not only presents entertainment content but also becomes a space for quite dynamic political, social, and cultural discourse. The demands of the people of 17+8 are one form of discourse space that occurs on social media. This study seeks to understand how Generation Z as active social media users interpret and respond to the narrative of the demands of the people of 17+8 that went viral on Instagram. By using a reception study approach with a qualitative approach, this study explores the meaning that Generation Z constructs on the issue and how they produce and disseminate content related to these demands. Data were collected through in-depth interviews with 6 Generation Z who are active in the 17+8 issue. The results of the study indicate that the majority of informants are in a dominant position, where they receive the message of the People's Demands 17+8 according to the meaning expected by the creator of the narrative, namely as a form of legitimate public aspiration that needs to be fought for.

Abstract

Abstrak. Artificial Intelligence growth have brought about significant changes in online learning at the university level. This study aims to understand the communication strategies employed by instructors and students in the use of AI during the online learning process. This study employs a qualitative phenomenological approach that explores the subjective experiences of participants who support AI as a medium for online learning. Interviews were conducted with students and faculty members who actively use AI platforms such as Canva Magic Write, ChatGPT, and Grammarly. The results indicate that the communication strategies established between faculty and students are collaborative, adaptive, and open to technological advancements, as they must align with the evolving times. However, challenges exist, including dependency, academic ethics, and disparities among AI users. In the digital age, this study is expected to serve as a foundation for developing more reflective, adaptive, and humanistic educational communication strategies.

Abstract

Abstrak. The increasing spread of misinformation on social media has prompted a number of universities in Asia to develop campus-based fact-checking initiatives. This study analyzes the epistemic orientation of fact-checking practices within the ANNIE School Net network, a regional Southeast Asian campus newsroom program led by Masato Kajimoto. The study employs a qualitative method with a comparative case study approach, utilizing participatory observation at the 2024 ANNIE School Net Conference, analysis of program documents, and content analysis of campus fact-checking Instagram accounts in Indonesia, Malaysia, and Vietnam. The findings reveal two distinct epistemic orientations. First, a news-reactive model focused on verifying viral news and current socio-political claims, as seen in the initiatives from Malaysia and Vietnam. Second, a scientific-educative model emphasizing the debunking of popular myths through scientific clarification, as practiced by one university in Indonesia. These findings suggest that knowledge transfer within academic networks does not result in homogeneous practices but is negotiated through institutional contexts, pedagogical priorities, and socio-political considerations. This study offers a typology of epistemic orientations in campus fact-checking as a contribution to digital literacy research in Southeast Asia.
