Abstract

This study aims to describe the dynamics of modernization within Islamic boarding schools (pesantren), the strategies adopted to preserve traditional values in the modern era, and the challenges as well as implications of these changes for their Islamic identity. The research employs a descriptive qualitative approach through literature review and document analysis. The findings indicate that the modernization of pesantren occurs dynamically through transformations in systems, curricula, and educational orientations while maintaining core Islamic values. In responding to modern developments, pesantren have adopted integrative strategies such as combining religious and general education, implementing digital technology, and improving management practices based on transparency and efficiency. However, modernization also presents challenges, particularly concerns about the erosion of simplicity and spirituality that characterize pesantren life. Nevertheless, pesantren have demonstrated their ability to adapt selectively, preserving their Islamic identity and scholarly tradition amid ongoing social change.

Abstract

Education is a key pillar in human resource development in Indonesia. However, the quality of education still faces various challenges, such as unequal access and low teaching quality. This study aims to analyze the education policies implemented by the government to improve the quality of education in Indonesia. Using a qualitative approach, the policy analysis was conducted to identify factors influencing the effectiveness of the policies and their impact on society. The analysis shows that despite the existence of programs such as compulsory education and teacher competency improvement, the gap between formulated policies and their implementation remains a major problem. Therefore, a more inclusive and participatory approach to education policy formulation is needed to ensure that each policy adopted addresses local needs and improves the overall quality of education. Islamic education in Indonesia faces a number of complex and diverse problems. This article uses a qualitative research approach to gain a deeper understanding of these issues. Through literature review, stakeholder interviews, and participant observation in Islamic education settings, this study uncovers key challenges, including the quality gap between formal and non-formal Islamic education, the lack of harmonization between Islamic education and the national education system, the need to improve the competency of educators, and the challenges of technology and globalization.

Abstract

Islamic Religious Education (PAI) plays a crucial role in shaping students' character in the era of globalization, marked by the rapid flow of information and technological developments, which, on the one hand, open wider access to knowledge but, on the other hand, pose a threat to the morality of the younger generation. This study aims to examine the relevance of PAI in strengthening students' faith, morality, and social values by examining social facts, international research findings, academic literature, and theoretical arguments. The research method uses a qualitative approach based on literature studies with content analysis of scientific journals, global institution reports, and Islamic education literature analyzed thematically. The results show that PAI plays a central role in instilling religious, tolerant, and humanistic character through value-based learning, habituation of worship, and teacher role models, with effectiveness greatly influenced by adaptive and contextual implementation strategies. These findings align with Lickona's character education theory and Bandura's social learning theory, and emphasize the urgency of strengthening an innovative, integrative, and multicultural PAI curriculum through collaboration between schools, families, and the community..

Abstract

Against the backdrop of the in-depth development of globalization and informatization, where social responsibility has attracted widespread attention, and considering the significance of college students' qualities such as social responsibility—given that they are the future backbone of society—as well as the status of relevant empirical research in this field, this study takes full-time college students from Shenzhen University, South China Agricultural University, and Yanshan University as samples. It collects data through questionnaires and in-depth interviews, conducts empirical analysis using statistical tools, constructs a research framework of "personal values - moral cognition - social responsibility cognition", formulates hypotheses, and explores the relationships among the three. The study finds that various dimensions of personal values have a significant impact on idealism and are significantly correlated with relativism; idealism, relativism, and ethics all have a significant impact on the cognition of social responsibility, and under the influence of ethics, idealism and relativism have a significant impact on the cognition of social responsibility. Based on these findings, the study is of great significance and provides support for college students' self-awareness and the establishment of correct values; the design of college courses and moral education work; the cultivation of high-quality talents in society; and the realization of social harmony and sustainable development

Abstract

This study explores digital ethics in the post-truth era by re-examining Ibn ‘Āsyūr’s interpretation of khutuwāt al-shayṭān (the steps of Satan). Employing a qualitative library research approach, it analyzes the primary text al-Taḥrīr wa al-Tanwīr alongside relevant contemporary literature. The findings indicate that Ibn ‘Āsyūr conceptualizes the steps of Satan as a gradual process that entices humans through subtle whispers until they become accustomed to deviant behavior. In today’s digital context, this idea resonates with algorithmic mechanisms of social media and the phenomenon of digital deception, which progressively cultivate bias, social polarization, and destructive patterns of behavior. The analysis highlights Ibn ‘Āsyūr’s emphasis on the necessity of self-control from the very outset. Accordingly, this research proposes the framework of a safeguarding fortress that integrates three interrelated dimensions: rational (critical thinking), psychological (self-regulation), and spiritual-ethical (moral awareness and divine guidance). Ultimately, digital ethics in the post-truth age cannot be sustained merely through technical literacy but must also be reinforced by a transcendental awareness that enables individuals to withstand the pervasive spread of informational illusions and disinformation.

Abstract

This study investigates how Empress Wu Zetian (r. 690–705 CE), China's only female emperor, strategically restructured the Buddhist Sangha to consolidate imperial authority in the early Tang period. While earlier scholarship often emphasizes Wu's use of Buddhist prophecy and personal devotion, this article foregrounds the administrative and institutional transformations that embedded Buddhism within statecraft. Drawing on primary sources—including imperial edicts in the Jiu Tang shu and Xin Tang shu, Dunhuang manuscripts, monastic biographies, and apocryphal scriptures such as the Great Cloud Sutra—the analysis reconstructs how the Sangha was bureaucratised through monk-official appointments, ordination examinations, and temple registration, and how its economic base expanded through land endowments and fiscal privileges. Theoretically, the article integrates Max Weber's model of charismatic and routinized legitimacy with Pierre Bourdieu's concept of religious capital to conceptualise Buddhist institutions as both ideological producers and administrative instruments. Findings reveal that Wu Zetian's mobilisation of Buddhism was not only a strategy of female legitimation in a Confucian patriarchal order, but also a catalyst for the centralisation of Tang religious governance. This case thus contributes to broader debates on religion and state formation, the political uses of Buddhist institutionalisation, and the gendered dynamics of religious legitimacy in imperial China.

Abstract

This study aims to analyze the integration of Islamic spirit and technological innovation in Islamic boarding school management in the digital era. The focus of the study is directed at how Islamic values remain the foundation for the application of modern technology to support the effectiveness of Islamic boarding school management. The research method used is descriptive qualitative with a literature study approach from various sources, such as journals, books, and relevant previous research results. The results show that Islamic boarding schools that are able to integrate spiritual values with digital technology—such as the implementation of student management information systems, online learning platforms, and administrative digitization—experience increased efficiency and transparency without compromising religious values. This integration also strengthens the character of students to be adaptive to current developments while still adhering to Islamic principles. The implications of this study emphasize the importance of developing digital capacity in Islamic boarding schools that remain grounded in Islamic spirituality, in order to create a modern, effective, and character-based educational ecosystem

Abstract

This study aims to analyze the integration of information technology in Islamic Religious Education (PAI) learning and compare the differences in teaching approaches between schools in urban and rural areas. The background of this research is based on the rapid digitalization of education, which has not been fully accompanied by equal access to technology and improvements in the digital competencies of educators. This study uses a qualitative-descriptive approach with a comparative study method through observation, interviews, and documentation in two schools with different environmental characteristics. The results show that schools in urban areas have a more optimal level of technology utilization, such as the use of online learning platforms, interactive media, and digital applications to support the PAI learning process. In contrast, schools in rural areas still rely on conventional methods such as lectures and face-to-face discussions due to limited technological facilities and network infrastructure. Nevertheless, the learning approach in rural areas is considered more contextual and effective in shaping the religious character of students. This study concludes that optimizing technology integration in PAI learning must be adapted to local social, cultural, and infrastructure conditions, accompanied by improving teacher competency and developing Islamic learning models that are in harmony with advances in digital technology.

Abstract

This study aims to examine the object of Islamic educational theory based on a community approach by tracing the historical and conceptual roots of critical education, as well as its relevance in contemporary social, political, and cultural contexts. Islamic education from a critical perspective is understood not only as a process of knowledge transfer, but also as a means of liberation and human empowerment from various forms of structural, ideological, and cultural oppression. This study uses a descriptive qualitative approach with a literature study method, which examines relevant national journals indexed by Sinta 2 and international articles (2020–2025). The analysis was carried out using the interactive model of Miles and Huberman, including data reduction, data presentation, and drawing conclusions. The results of the study indicate that critical education in Islam has a strong theological basis, rooted in the values of amar ma'ruf nahi munkar and the principle of tahrīr al-insān (human liberation). Islamic education is understood as a process of spiritual and social emancipation that fosters reflective awareness, builds moderation, and strengthens the cultural identity of the community. Furthermore, Islamic education serves as a political product, a means of cultural resistance, and a preserver of just and civilized local values. Thus, the theory of community-based Islamic education integrates spirituality, rationality, and social awareness to shape individuals who are faithful, knowledgeable, and civilized.
