Abstract

Young adulthood is a life stage where one develops romantic relationships culminating in marriage and forming one’s own family. However, recent trends suggest that starting and maintaining healthy marriage relationships may be challenging in Indonesia, indicating a low marital readiness amongst young adults. Several factors that impact one’s marital readiness include family life knowledge, coming to terms with family-of-origin issues, emotional intelligence and communication skills. Therefore, training that addresses these factors amongst young adults can help prepare them for a healthy marriage. Komisi Dewasa Muda at GKI Gereja Gejayan, who serves young adults in the Sleman area found this issue in their young adult community. Through this training, the young adults in the Sleman area may be equipped to enter marriage well and to develop, as well as maintain a healthy marriage relationship moving forward. The evaluation of the training also indicates that the materials provided were relevant to adult marriage preparation, had a positive impact, and were delivered using an engaging approach.

Abstract

Violence and exploitation of children in Indonesia remain serious issues, as indicated by data from the Online Information System for the Protection of Women and Children (Simfoni PPA), which recorded 15,120 cases of child violence in 2023. Based on that, it is very necessary to fulfill children's basic rights, as stated in the 1989 Convention on the Rights of the Child. This Community Service Program (PkM) is a collaboration between Yayasan Mandiri Kreatif Indonesia (Yamakindo), the Ministry of Women's Empowerment and Child Protection (KemenPPPA), and the Faculty of Psychology at Pelita Harapan University (UPH). The program, themed "Healthy Parenting by Upholding Children's Fundamental Rights", aims to educate 20 parents in the Tangerang area on children's rights and effective parenting strategies. The activities involved lectures, a Q&A session, and puppet interactions, accompanied by pre-test and post-test evaluations. The results indicated an increase in parents' understanding of children's rights. Although the program was well-executed, improvements in time management and the implementation of follow-up programs for continuous monitoring and evaluation are recommended for future initiatives.

Abstract

Parents of students at SMP Muhammadiyah 7 Yogyakarta who are raising teenagers for the first time often face difficulties in parenting. They do not know how properly care for teenagers. This parenting training aims to provide knowledge and methods to for raising teenagers. The training is carried out using lecture and discussion methods. The effectiveness of the training was measured using the Brief  Parenting Scale with pre-test and post-test assessments. The pre-test results showed that 20 parents of students had scores in the over-activity aspect in the high category, while the laxness aspect was in the medium and low categories. This indicates that the main parenting problem among these parents is a high level of over-activity. The focus of the training is to reduce the over-activity aspect to medium or low level. The t-test analysis of the pre-test and post-test measurements on the over-activity aspect showed a p <0.001 with a mean difference of 7.25. The pre-test mean was 15.6 (high category), while the post-test mean was 8.35 (medium category). Thus, parenting training for parents of Muhammadiyah 7 Yogyakarta middle school students has proven to be effective.

Abstract

An understanding of parenting has becoming increasingly important, especially within church communities. GKI Gejayan recognizes the significance of parenting in supporting the growth of children and adolescents in a Christian context. This understanding led to developing a community service program titled, "Maximizing Developmental Potential and Parenting Patterns within the GKI Gejayan Yogyakarta Spouse Community”. The program uses a psychoeducational approach with two main sessions aimed at equipping parents with practical tools for better parenting. The first session, held in person, focused on child development, covering cognitive, physical, and psychosocial aspects that influence parenting. It also addressed common parenting challenges and introduced love languages, providing parents with strategies to improve their parenting methods. The second online session concentrated on the role of discipline in child-rearing, exploring effective disciplinary methods and the appropriate use of punishment to support child development. The program targets married couples with children, offering valuable guidance to help them support their children's growth at each developmental stage. Ultimately, this initiative seeks to enhance parenting practices and contribute to the holistic development of children and adolescents in the community.
